Thanks All for quick reply .

rich: I have started my preparation two months back and i am planning to write my GMAT exam in last week of September .
My target score is around 680 .
Till date i have taken few verbal tests of gmatclub and as i mentioned before ,the score fluctuates :v30 ,v25,v34,and suddenly it dropped even to v21.
The quantz score is 42. In the past week i have taken a lot of quant quizzes and scored an average of 70-80% in low and medium level questions .And subsequently started with 700 level which i have confidence can be improved.
Please let me know if any further information is needed.

Any further suggestion is welcome .

Thanks,
Saba

Hi Saba,

When I asked about your practice CAT scores, I was referring to FULL-LENGTH CATs (with the Essay and IR sections included). Have you taken any of those yet? If you have, then how did you score on those Exams (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)? If you have not taken any of those yet, then you should plan to take one soon.

Thanks rich and sorry for late reply.
I just took one free Manhattan Mock test and scored a 570 :( (Q40,V29).Verbal seems to around 28-30 now .
My SC is very strong and RC keeps fluctuating between 60- 70 %.
CR is the most difficult part for me with only 40% accuracy.
Please suggest to improve on it so that the overall verbal score pushes to atleast 34.
I am using GMAT PREP Question Pack for quantz and also the gmat club tests.
I am planning to take GMAT PREP -one free test by this weekend.

Thanks,
Saba

Hi Saba,

Now that we have a CAT score to use as reference, you can get a clear sense of everything that you'll need to work on to hit your goal score. Raising a 570 to a 680+ will take some considerable effort though - and you'll have to make big improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. That work will likely take at least another 2 months of consistent, guided study, so you might want to consider pushing back your Test Date.

1) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi Saba,

Based on the Schools that you've listed, you won't necessarily need a 680+ to apply - but if you are going to keep studying until you hit that score goal, then you have to give yourself enough additional time to train to get up to that level. With your current timeframe, you have about 4 weeks of study time before you plan to take the GMAT, but that probably won't be enough time for you to get to a 680+.

1) What application Rounds are you considering for each of these Schools?

Hello Rich,
I gave my GMAT PREP exam 1 today and scored a 670 (Q49, V33).
Also two weeks back, i scored a 620 on the veritas test (Q47,V29).
I would like some suggestions on this as to when should I consider writing my actual GMAT exam .
As my target score is 680 , do i need to still try and improve on verbal ?
Please suggest something on this. I am planning to write my exam by last week of September or first week of October.

Thanks,
Saba

Your GMATPrep score is very close to your target score, but I would suggest that you put in a little more effort on both quant and verbal so that you can cross 680 on your practice tests (you will be under greater pressure during the actual exam). Also, you should rely primarily on the GMATPreps at this stage in your preparation. Get one or both exam packs so that you have enough of those tests to take.

Hi Saba,

Over the last 2 weeks, you have reported scores of 570/Q40/V29, 620/Q47/V29 and 670/Q49/V33. A 100-point improvement in 2 weeks time is not a common achievement, so I have a few questions about how you took these CATs:

1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you plan to take your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?

Yes i am actually trying to improve my verbal score a bit more by doing only official questions and redoing the incorrect ones.

Hello Rich ,
Thanks for the reply.
I have taken entire test in new order selection :
Verbal, quantitative and then IR and essay for all the tests .
I have not taken any lengthy breaks nor did i pause the exam .The only different thing which i did was, for the Manhattan prep test i had timing issues and i had left few verbal and quantitative unattempted.
But for veritas and GMAT Prep i attempted all the questions and guessed the last verbal question in one of the test .

Thanks,
Saba

Hi Saba,

If we assume that this most recent CAT score is accurate, then you might be at the necessarily 'ability level' right now to hit your goal score. GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, this recent score shows that you could potentially score as high as 700 (at the 'high end', but you might also score 640 - at the "low end").

To try to lock-in a higher score, you should analyze this CAT and try to define WHY you got questions wrong. In that way, you could better define the areas that you should focus on to improve. After reviewing each section of this CAT, how many questions did you get wrong....

1) Because of a silly/little mistake?
2) Because there was some math/verbal that you just could not remember how to do?
3) Because the question was too hard?
4) Because you were low on time and had to guess?
5) How many Verbal questions did you 'narrow down to 2 choices' and get wrong? And how many did you 'narrow down' and get correct?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
