If Points X and Y are on either side of Point P, the distance between points X and Y is 3+4 = 7
But, if the points X and Y are on the same side, the distance between the points is 4-3 = 1

Since we are not given on which side of P are points X and Y located,
we cannot clearly determine the length of XY. (Option E)

(A) 1
(B) 4
(C) 5
(D) 7
(E) cannot be determined

Same conclusion as pushpitkc , but I sketched.

Y is distance 3 from P, X is distance 4 from P.

X_______4________P_____3_____Y

X__1__Y____3____P

XY = 7, XY =1

Answer E

Scenario 1: P <---3--->Y<--1-->X, in this case length of XY = 1.

Scenario 2: X <----4----> P <---3--->Y, in this case length of XY = 7.

Hence, option E.

Points X and Y exact location w.r.t Point P cannot be solved from the available information in the problem statement.
Hence Option E
