Creating a filter: in this question, we can identify an error in the original sentence by restoring an elided portion of the sentence; an elided phrase, or elision, is a phrase which has been omitted but is clearly understood. When a sentence contains an elision, inserting the elided words will sometimes expose an error, especially in the use of comparisons and pronouns. Namely, the sentence as written says, "his symphonies are performed more than any other composer is performed." Composers aren't performed. The intended meaning is that, "His symphonies are performed more than those of any other composer...are performed."
Applying the filter: our expectation is satisfied in choice (D). Choices (B) and (C) fail to solve the problem and still make us talk about composers when we want to talk about their symphonies. (E) is proper in making the comparison about symphonies, but "as" is incorrect. The sentence using the comparative word "more," and both "more" and "less" require always the word "than" and never "as." So (E) is out.
The correct answer is (D).
