Good Afternoon everyone!
I am from India. I currently do not have any work-experience in Finance but I have an MBA in Finance from a rank 7 B-school in India and a CFA Level 2 certification.
My goal is to work for a Bank in Singapore or regions around. I was interested in either of MS Finance programs from SMU or Essec. I contacted many alumni from SMU and someof them did tell me that the job market in finance in poor and Singaporean citizens are given preference than international students. So, how are the opportunities for international students after studying MS from either of these institutes and wanting to work in Singapore?
Also, which program is of better quality? Essec is 8 months course + 4/6 months of internship. SMU is 12 months course. So which is a better degree in terms of quality, prestige and chances of getting a job in Singapore? Is it so difficult for a non-local to be admitted in Investment banks in Singapore? Also, Is it still possible to get an internship off cycle after completing the MAF program from SMU?
In addition, could you give me your opinion about the quality of the universities in Singapore? The employability rate after each program? The career opportunities that they offer?
Thank you in advance for you answer. Any help from your side will be much appreciated. My email id is

Hi Nipun,
Both programs are good and you should look for the best fit for you. You're already pursuing MBA in Finance and you don't have any work ex, doesn't another degree flatten the learning curve? Maybe you should work for a couple of years before doing another degree. If you're targeting IB, it might be even tougher for you without any work ex.
Having said all this, you should go for a course that has internship element. In any country, work permits are a hassle and companies will prefer to hire locals. You will need to sell yourself to the companies just like you will do to the admissions committees as to why they should hire you instead. If you get an internship you will most likely land a job.
I understand you questions, since there is no employment reports on either school's website. But the best way to go around that is research. Google stats, talk to current and former students, talk to the schools about your concerns, etc. You may not be able to go into IB straight away but you may get into rotational programs that may eventually lead to IB. You have an MBA from IIM and CFA level 2, I'm quite confident that you're a competitive candidate and will land a job in Singapore. Hope this helps.
Best,
