Overall, I like your profile, and I am sure the schools do too! Although you did not specifically mention your goals, I would like to tell you that top B-schools and top strategy & operations consulting firms highly seek after Military and Navy applicants. These profiles remain unaffected by excessive character traits, and by the politics of the situation, which makes them highly desirable, especially in consulting fields that require significant personal sacrifice. Military personnel are accustomed to making sacrifices during their service and have a remarkable drive, which gives them a distinct advantage over other applicants.

How likely will you encounter strong competition at target schools with very similar profiles? Very likely, but even though there are many other applicants from the military, I can certainly see an officer with your unique experience and demographic profile bringing unique insights. If you focus on your distinctiveness in your application (without overdoing it with storytelling) and balance your application with evidence of strong analytical skills (LORs or course certificates, if available), you should do well. I am very pleased to hear that you are an avid programmer, as this is an aspect that most Army applicants struggle with in their post-MBA careers. You should highlight this interest and outline how you plan to use this skill in your career.

On the surface, your GMAT is fine, but not impressive. It would be helpful to share the breakdown, as schools look at Q & V scores individually and compare your performance to your demographic group. Admissions committees evaluate your scores against your peers from the same demographic group (sort of a bell curve). For example, a Q49 score (around the 75th percentile) may be considered borderline for overrepresented demographic groups at top business schools. If your quantitative score meets or exceeds this threshold, the admissions committee is confident you can handle the academically demanding curriculum. On the other hand, your verbal score reflects your potential to participate effectively in discussions within a truly global and diverse group, especially at a global school like Oxford.

I also encourage you to strongly consider IIM A as you are a great fit for the most prestigious MBA program in India.

I routinely work with military, naval, manufacturing, and operations applicants, and I have 10 years of industry experience in operations design and management. Please contact me if you would like a candid discussion about your profile.

Get personalized advice tailored to your specific situation. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the B School admissions process. We do not cap discussion hours with our applicants

Hello Vishnupsp,

I hope you are doing good. Your profile appears to be quite impressive and unique, which could make you a strong candidate for the Said Business School. Being an Indian male at 34 might be slightly older compared to the average candidate, but your extensive work experience could balance that out. Your 10th and 12th grades are strong and showcase consistent academic performance. While your B.Tech degree in Computer Science Engineering with a 77% is competitive. A GMAT score of 700 is solid and falls within the range that most top business schools consider competitive.

Your 11 years of military service as a specialist in operations is a significant asset. This unique background sets you apart from the typical pool of candidates. Your experience in coordinating international exercises and high-profile missions demonstrates leadership, teamwork, and the ability to handle complex situations. Emphasize how your military experience in operations, leadership roles, and international coordination has equipped you with valuable skills that are transferable to a business context.

Coming to your ECs, your participation in marathons, graphic design skills, comic strip anthology, coding skills, and other hobbies showcase a well-rounded personality with a diverse skill set. These activities could demonstrate your passion, creativity, and dedication beyond your military role. While school awards are from a long time ago, they could still show a history of excellence and achievement. Articulate your post-MBA career goals clearly and show how an MBA from Said Business School aligns with your aspirations.

Overall, your profile is strong, and if you craft a compelling narrative that connects your unique experiences, skills, and aspirations, you should have a competitive chance at gaining admission to Said Business School.

Hello HrithuOlickel,

I hope you are doing good. Your profile is quite impressive and well-rounded, and you have a strong chance of being considered favorably by Oxford's Said Business School. Being the first woman in your family to study abroad adds diversity and a unique perspective to your profile. Your undergraduate GPA of 9.05 is excellent and showcases consistent academic achievement. Your high school scores are also strong, adding to your academic record. Your GMAT score of 720 is competitive and falls within the range that top business schools consider.

Coming to your work experience, your work experience as a Product Manager at a startup and Project Manager at ABB demonstrates leadership, project management skills, and impact. Taking a startup from seed funding to Series A funding is a noteworthy achievement. Also, managing teams and working directly with the C-Suite adds to your leadership experience. Your internship experiences showcase practical exposure and an understanding of renewable energy, IoT, and more. The breadth of your internships demonstrates versatility and a willingness to explore various fields. Having a publication in IEEE Explore, along with recognition for the best paper, indicates your contribution to research.

Your involvement in SWIM, HOPE, and other volunteer activities highlights your commitment to social causes. Leadership roles in college clubs, societies, and events showcase your ability to manage and lead teams. State-level chess playing and engagement in hobbies like swimming, reading, and watercolor painting add to your well-rounded personality.

Considering the strengths in your profile, Said Business School at the University of Oxford would likely consider you a strong candidate, more in the "match" category rather than a "reach" or "safety" school. Your combination of academic excellence, strong test scores, significant work experience, leadership roles, research involvement, and commitment to extracurricular activities align well with the values and expectations of top-tier business schools.

To maximize your chances of admission, make sure to highlight your unique experiences, achievements, and contributions in your application essays and interviews. Emphasize how your background and accomplishments align with your future goals and the values of the business school.

Good luck with your application to Oxford's Said Business School!

Hey Vishnupsp 👋 ,

👇 Here is your detailed profile evaluation:

Strengths:
👉 Unique Work Experience: 11 years in the Navy is not something you see every day in MBA applications. This can be quantified by detailing the scale and impact of the missions you've led or coordinated, e.g., "Led a team of 30 in a high-stakes international exercise involving X countries."

👉 Leadership: Consistent leadership roles in a high-pressure environment. You can quantify this by mentioning specific leadership metrics, such as the number of people you've led and the outcomes of those missions.

👉 Diverse Interests: Your interests in coding, graphic design, and running add depth to your profile. You can quantify this by mentioning any apps you've developed that have been implemented at work or the number of marathons you've participated in.

Areas for Improvement:
👉 GMAT Score: A 700 is impressive but given the competitive pool, especially for Indian applicants, a higher score would be beneficial but you can still target with this one because GMAT is just 1/4th of your application and the rest depends on how you craft a compelling essay and SOP.

👉 Extracurriculars: While you have diverse interests, formalizing these into recognizable achievements or contributions would strengthen your application.

School Recommendations:
👉 Dream: Oxford’s Said Business School
👉 Competitive: Imperial, Warwick, ESSEC
👉 Safe: Manchester, Edinburgh, Leeds, IESEG

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a FREE call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hello mayanksgmat,

Thanks for writing in.

Your experience and goals sync with the strengths of both programs; so, a lot depends on how well you portray your candidature through your essays; the experience is on the higher side so you must be sure to portray your need for an MBA at this point in your career. What you have mentioned makes a lot of sense.

The GMAT score leans around the average, especially, with regard to LBS; hence, an improvement in the score will definitely help your case.

Should you wish to discuss your prospects in greater detail, please feel free to get in touch with us for a profile evaluation session.

All the best!

I am aware that my profile is fairly average but would still appreciate some feedback. My GRE score leaves a lot to be desired. While I am preparing for a retake, I'm finding it difficult to balance work with prep at the moment.

Background and nationality: Indian, male, age 29, 31 at program completion
Undergrad: Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Telecomm Engineering from a top public university in India (Nationally ranked 10th in engineering)
GPA: 7.53/10, roughly translates to 3.33/4
GRE (323 160 Q, 163 V) I underperformed on the day and have a retake scheduled this week
Looking to join an MBA program in August 2024
Already applied to: Emory Goizueta, Georgetown McDonough, Cambridge Judge
Other Shortlisted Schools: Oxford Said, Cornell Johnson, Dartmouth Tuck, NYU Stern, UNC Kenan Flagler

Work Experience and Leadership (~6.5 yrs at time of joining program):

Post college experience:
3 years at a major US digital marketing agency where I started as part of a founding team that helped set up a service delivery centre in India for the agency. Led a significant amount of knowledge transfer from international teams to set up the practice. Led discovery sessions and requirements gathering for every new client the Indian business unit onboarded for the marketing platforms practice for the first six months. Onboarded roughly 15 accounts (including several Fortune 500 and 100 accounts) over this period and trained 70+ new joiners. Worked directly with business unit head in talent acquisition- screening, managing job posts, ATS, and vendors (job portals, hiring agencies). Headcount grew from 4 to 200 in 6 months, interviewed hundreds of candidates and filled 80+ open positions. Was the lead consultant on several client accounts with demonstrated impact on business KPIs like engagement, conversions and CAC

Most recent experience:
Close to 3 years at Goldman Sachs working in the Asset Management marketing team. Led go-to-market activities on digital channels for 7 ETFs, managed performance marketing campaigns targeted at fund distributors, institutional investors and family offices that led to gross sales of over $476 mn, led a 25 member team for post-merger integration workstreams for platform integrations, rebranding, website reskinning, rebranding of over 370 funds. I also lead the SEO function within Asset Management Marketing. My role involves a lot of cross functional collaboration across sales, tech, portfolio managers, investment and product strategists. I am also directly exposed to the investment research and thought leadership that is produced by the investing teams as that is a key component of our marketing messaging.

I am the program manager of the mentoring initiative entire Asset Management marketing team (roughly 80 people) under direct supervision of the Asset Management CMO.

I led 3 person team to regional finals of Goldman Sachs Analyst Impact Fund, where teams identify nonprofits that are tackling global challenges and pitch innovative solutions to the firm’s leadership.

Older experience:

After junior year in college interned at an Indian NGO called Goonj where I did fieldwork in a economically disadvantaged district of rural India that was a hotbed of Maoist millitancy, directly mobilizing 150 individuals for rural development projects such as canal digging, shed construction, cultivating a school kitchen garden. Built a lead list for fundraising. Organized collection camps that raised over 1 metric tonne of material and $24,000 in monetary contributions. Worked directly with organization leadership to launch a range of upcylced products to monetize surplus material by producing and marketing a range of upcycled sustainable lifestyle products (bags, accessories). Set up kiosks at collection drives, earned $1200 gross sales in pilot.

Had an industrial internship at Honeywell where I was stationed at a major steel plant in India and worked on process automation control and safety.

Post MBA goals: Long term is to set up a PE firm focused on deploying growth equity in India. Short term is to transition from Asset Management marketing to a more core finance role in IB, preferably in an FSG Group (still trying to figure out if this indeed is the best option for me). Currently networking within Goldman across Global Banking & Markets and Asset & Wealth Management and self-learning to prepare for the transition. Looking for a pre-MBA internship and am actively reaching out to people in my network to help land a role. Would appreciate any information around how to secure a pre-MBA internship that can help my transition.

👋 Hey smukherjee42,

I came across your profile evaluation query on the forum and thought I'd reach out to offer some assistance from my own experience.

So here is what I would suggest:

Your profile showcases a robust blend of experiences that span across sectors like digital marketing and asset management, which lends uniqueness to your application. Here's a deeper look into the elements of your profile:

Strengths:

➡️ Diverse Experience 🌐: Your work in digital marketing and at Goldman Sachs offers a comprehensive understanding of both the marketing and financial sectors. Setting up a service delivery center and engaging in significant client onboarding at the marketing agency is a strong point.

➡️ Leadership and Impact 🚀: Leading the go-to-market strategies for ETFs at Goldman Sachs, managing performance marketing campaigns, and being responsible for significant gross sales are substantial achievements. Your leadership role in post-merger integration and SEO function further fortifies this.

➡️ Community and Social Initiatives 🌍: Your internship at Goonj and the tangible impacts you created in rural India adds depth and showcases your commitment to community development.

➡️ Extracurricular Activities 🎨: The involvement in the film festival at university and co-founding a graphic design club demonstrates creativity and initiative beyond work.

Areas of Improvement & Detailed Suggestions:

➡️ GRE Score Enhancement 📈: While 323 is a decent score, bumping it up to 330+ can enhance the application, especially given the competitive demographic.
➡️ Example: Allocate focused hours for GRE prep, particularly for the Quant section. Engage in mock tests and time-bound problem-solving.

➡️ Clear Transition Plan 🔍: Clarify and substantiate your short-term goal to transition into IB. Articulate how an MBA will facilitate this transition and why it's crucial for your long-term vision.
➡️ Example: Seek feedback from industry professionals to understand the critical skills required in IB and how an MBA can bridge your existing skills with the desired ones.

➡️ Pre-MBA Internship 🏢: Given your long-term goal of setting up a PE firm, gaining experience in private equity, even if it's a short stint, can be beneficial.
➡️ Example: Connect with PE professionals on LinkedIn, express your aspirations, and seek advice or opportunities for pre-MBA internships.

Relevant Schools 🏫:

➡️ Dream: Cornell, Kellogg, Tuck.
➡️ Competitive: NYU Stern, Duke Fuqua, USC Marshall, UNC.
➡️ Safe: Emory Goizueta, Foster, Georgetown McDonough.

Your aspirations to set up a PE firm focusing on growth equity in India align well with your background and experiences. With a well-articulated narrative and strong application elements, your profile holds promise for several top-tier MBA programs.

Hello smukherjee42,

I hope you are doing good. It appears that you have a diverse and impressive background. It's great that you recognize the need for a retake and are actively preparing for it. A higher GRE score can significantly improve your chances of admission, especially to competitive MBA programs. Make sure to prepare thoroughly and take practice tests to boost your confidence.

Coming to your work experience, your experience is a significant strength. Your leadership roles and accomplishments in both the digital marketing agency and at Goldman Sachs demonstrate your ability to lead teams, drive results, and handle complex projects. Be sure to highlight these achievements in your applications and use specific data and metrics to quantify your impact. Your experience with a US digital marketing agency and at Goldman Sachs adds an international dimension to your profile, which is often valued by MBA programs. Emphasize how your work has a global impact and how it aligns with your future career goals.

Your experience with the Indian NGO Goonj shows a commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. Highlight how this experience has shaped your values and influenced your career aspirations. Your involvement in organizing a film festival and co-founding a graphic design and creative club in high school showcases your leadership and creativity. These experiences can help demonstrate your well-roundedness and passion for extracurricular activities.

Speaking about your post-MBA goals, your long-term goal of setting up a PE firm in India is ambitious and unique. Be sure to convey your passion for this goal in your application essays and interviews. Additionally, for your short-term goal of transitioning to a core finance role in IB, your networking efforts and self-learning are commendable. Continue networking and exploring opportunities to gain relevant experience or a pre-MBA internship in finance. Your shortlisted schools are a mix of highly reputable institutions. Be sure to tailor your application to each school's unique strengths and values. Clearly articulate why you're a good fit for each program and how their offerings align with your goals.

Ensure that your recommenders can provide strong and specific examples of your leadership and accomplishments. It's important that they can vouch for your abilities and potential.

Regarding securing a pre-MBA internship in finance, continue leveraging your network within Goldman Sachs and reach out to alumni from your target MBA programs who may have advice or connections in the industry. Attend networking events and workshops related to finance and investment banking. Your proactive approach and determination will be assets in securing such an internship.

Overall, while your GRE score may be a concern, your extensive work experience, leadership roles, and clear post-MBA goals can make your application stand out. Use your application to convey your unique strengths and how you'll contribute to the MBA programs you're applying to. Good luck with your GRE retake and the MBA application process!
