Why I want an MBA: Short term goal is to transition into consulting (MBB or T2) where I'd learn how to formulate strategies and implement them in a business context. Long term, the learnings, prestige, and network of a good MBA would prove invaluable for when I either get into entrepreneurship on my own, or join the family business.

Why I want one now: I want to leave my current job and transition into consulting. Also, I'm somewhat burnt out and so I want a vacation lol.

Target schools: LBS and Oxbridge

Background

Work experience: Slightly above 4 years at matriculation (so just 3 years right now). I'm currently an equity research analyst in a lower-tier MM investment bank's office in my home country (located in South East Asia). (Yeah I'm not exactly a stock broker since that applies more to S&T, but I had to put something in the title of this post). The bank isn't really a well known brand, but it has a global presence (with a focus on Asia however in terms of investment banking activities). I cover a specific sector and have some international experience doing marketing/business trips (all in Asia though). I also jumpstarted and now handle the local internship program of this bank. Before this role, I had a summer analyst stint at a BB's ER and S&T divisions (also in SEA). My family also runs a business (~500 employees) and although I am not formally employed in it, I do help out whenever I can (ex. I help out in some recruitment activities, managing a fixed-income fund with private bankers, and doing the initial contacting of possible clients/business partners).

Extra curriculars and other experience: A little weak on this end. Haven't really done any formal ECs post undergrad. I do help out in my family's rather informal charity event, but this happens just once a year.

Undergrad school/major: Business Management (but I took a lot of quant classes) in a T2 uni in my country but it doesn't rank well globally.

Other education/coursework: Took a finance summer course in a top uni in the UK.

Race/nationality: East Asian/South East Asian ethnicity, citizen of a South East Asian country

Age and Sex: 24 male (I'd be 25 at matriculation)

Stats

GMAT Score: Took the GRE and (unofficially) scored a 326 (160V, 166Q). It converts to a 700 GMAT. Not sure about AWA but I would get my score on that portion soon (I'm expecting a 5-6). Should I do a retake? My score is at or above the average of all of the programs I'm targeting which disclose their average GREs and my tentative top choices say that they do not have a preference for one test over the other. (LBS does not announce its average GRE, but its average GMAT score is a 701. I guess I'm /slightly/ below average here when doing a straight-forward conversion.)

Undergrad GPA: 3.6x/4.0. Side note: My GPA looks unimpressive but my uni doesn't inflate grades, so I actually graduated at the 95th percentile in terms of GPA. How do I let adcom know about this?

Others: I speak 3 languages fluently (including English) if that matters, and have elementary fluency in one other language.

Concerns: I'd matriculate at 25 with 4 years of WE, but I'm applying to programs whose students (on average) matriculate at 28-29 with 5-5.5 years of WE. Will this be an issue? Also, the relative lack of ECs, and a decent but not amazing GRE score.

Hi GMATworm100,

You have got a great profile. Let’s go step-by-step in evaluating your profile:

- You have got a decent ‘quantitative’ work experience. About your international experience, I do not see it as a global one, but definitely you can bring stories of how traveling in different parts of Asia has helped you understand this continent and shaped your personal values and perspective. Also, the experience of handling an internship program can give you a narrative of good leadership experience.

- About your ECs, I think people have a wrong understanding of this part. Your EC is nothing but your interests. What you like to do in your free time, as a stress-buster, or how you may have helped people in your personal life. You can bring any narratives of your personal life which you think are in alignment with the school’s values too. And I think your involvement in your family business may help develop an understanding of different domains of the banking/finance industry.

- Your stats seem decent and I feel a 326 GRE is good, as long as you can bring quantitative skills in your profile, which I think you do possess. Also, SAID has its own assessment procedure to test your analytical skills so it would give less importance to GMAT/ GRE. And it’s really great that you have taken a summer course in the UK and can speak four languages (learning different languages makes your brain sharper and a multi-tasker).

With all of the above, I see a fair chance for make it to your target schools. That said, Oxford is exceptionally concerned with ‘fit’, so be sure to have solid reasons for being a part of this beautiful community. If you’d like to take an insight of this school, feel free to view the SAID page on our website. Eventually, what’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect all the dots and build a great story. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances to some good schools in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hello folks,

Hope everyone is well and safe!

Background and nationality: 30 yr old Indian male

Undergrad Information: Completed my undergraduate in business with a marketing major from a top-30 business school in the US with a poor GPA of 2.3/4. I did not take quite a few courses seriously then (youth, eh). However, my major GPA is 3.81/4.

GMAT: Took the GRE and scored 325; Q164 V161.

Work experience and leadership:

Almost 7 years of work experience divided as follows-

2+ years as a social entrepreneur helping unemployed youth between ages 18-28 learn employable hard skills and get gainfully employed. We helped train and employ 2,500+ students out of which 800 or so students belonged to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. Due to the challenges of scale and capital, we had to shut down.

1+ year as a part of core team in an Edtech startup where I worked on developing online employment linked courses and driving sales.

2+ years as a political consultant with a major political party in India. Devised and executed political campaign strategy, and worked alongside major leaders including cabinet ministers, Chief Ministers, MPs and MLAs. I also got a chance to travel extensively especially to remote tribal belts in multiple states.

Currently working as a strategy, consulting and market research consultant. Helped a Y-combinator startup set up and initiate their India operations before Covid hit and their operations were paused. Currently helping a French giant explore partnership or acquisition in the Japanese automation industry and a Swedish organization set up their sustainable manufacturing in India.

Community and others: Volunteer my time and expertise with a small NGO run by college students who teach students who are unable to attend school. I help them with multiple requirements like acquiring infrastructure for classrooms through local partnerships, fundraising, etc. During the Covid pandemic, we helped 160+ families with food essentials for a period of two months and also facilitated their safe passage to their native villages by coordinating for their transportation with the local administration.

Post MBA goals: Immediate post-MBA goal is to work in tech. Through my travels across the interior of India and after my own struggles of achieving scale with my impact startup, I feel utilizing tech is the best way to achieve impact at scale in India. Thus, I wish to pick up skills related to tech product development (I have committed myself to learn Python in the next year) which I can utilize for my long term goal of entrepreneurship.

As an entrepreneur, I wish to work in the livelihoods space and enable the youth to have easier access to employment through up-gradation of skills and/or micro-entrepreneurship. The Self Help Group model in India can be revitalized using fintech and tech-driven skill up-gradation training.

Anything else? Pursuing an online program in Corporate Finance to offset my poor Finance grades in college which impacted my GPA.

I am wondering whether pursuing the online program in Corporate Finance makes sense or should I retake the GRE and aim to improve my score.

Hello subwaynyc,
You have a distinct profile which the AdCom would love to see. You have a nice GPA, though it would help to understand your major and university to put it more in perspective. Your global Weis definitely a plus. Try to bring that out in your essay.
I am hoping your EC are spread out across the breadth of your professional experience. You need to be more specific in your post-MBA goals and would want to make a compelling case for your post-MBA goals (such as why you cannot achieve this goal without an MBA).

Hi kloppismydad,

Your profile looks great and rather interesting. Yes, your undergrad GPA is really low but good that you have a great score in your major. Your GRE seems at par with the Oxford average (with a good quant score). So, overall, your quantifiables seem average, and to enhance your chance, you should retake GRE. And I say do not go for any finance program now because finance is nowhere in the picture of your goals and future career. Your work experience is something that sets you apart. Your own startup experience, then edtech experience, after this a really good political experience and now an independent consultant (I am assuming from the details). So, your career does exhibit elements of leadership, initiatives, impact, and international experience. The best part is your travel and now you know the rural, tribal roots of India which may go a long way in helping your entrepreneurial journey. What I do not understand is your post-MBA goals. Your long term goal of entrepreneur makes sense and for this, learnings in the tech field look relevant. But exactly, what roles you want to undertake to help your long term goals? And while thinking about this, also ponder if your prior career makes sense to the roles? What I am saying is to make them more defined, well-connected and solid. We are delighted to hear your story and would love to guide you. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi tanayagl,

I think your ECs back in college were quite great exhibiting leadership experiences and international experience as well. Your work-experience seems good with some instances of your impact on the organization. Then your experience in the family business seems actually great. Also, I see you a very innovative person considering your projects in college, work, and now your post-MBA goals. To make your application stronger, try to find some of your hobbies as well and if possible, work on them. I understand your hiccups of low experience but believe me it's the quality that matters and if you can bring the right points to highlight in your story (with a better GMAT score), I see you have a fair shot at Oxford. Also, I think you should shortlist schools according to your overall profile. Rotman and Johnson can be some good picks for you. So, have faith in you and have some good research into picking the right schools and understanding their community (you may get an idea for Rotman and Said). We would love to have a better picture of your profile to be able to guide you better. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi,

Pleaser review my profile for Said Business School.

Overview
After completing my under graduation, I was sure about pursuing a fulfilling career but did not know which direction to head. Going with the theme of my subjects, I started working with a Big 4- safe option but not satisfying despite the awards and accolades. Also, I did not want to pursue an ACCA or CPA, so I decided to venture into business.

In my next role of a Business Development Manager, I established the infrastructure development vertical and gained exposure to managerial responsibilities and expertise in sales strategy and developing partnerships.

Due to a family matter, I decided to move back to support my ailing grandparents. To cover for the gap in my professional portfolio, I interned with my current organisation, Pahal (NGO) for six months and fell in love with my job. It's been two years since, and I am sure that a career in the development sector is my way forward!

WORK EXPERIENCE:I was selected as one of the 12 students from different NITs across the country to the Pepsico Graduate Engineering Trainee Program . In the duration of a year of training in the manufacturing side of the business I was the first person responsible for the glass bottling line in one of the facturies . Managing and exceeding the expectations in this role I moved on to another factory in Pepsico itself where I was responsible for the leading the Juice Glass Bottling line. In both of these roles I lead a team of around 20 line operators , and we achieved a Net Efficiency Gain in the lines by approx 5 %.(Duration 1 year)

Post this I moved in the Project management side of techops . Here I was involved in the designing and procurement of the the line and utility machinery for a green field factory . (Duration 1 year)

In my current role I am leading the Productivity and Performance Projects for all the 10 manufacturing plants . Herein , I am the first person person responsible for exceuting , tracking , monitoring & controlling the 15 field projects in various factories . These projects include focused Efficiency improvement of some of the beverage lines , Manpower reduction on some staions on the line etc.

Part Time Profession : I am an Indian Classical singer and have been trained for 6 years and hold a Sangeet Visharad . Currently I have my own Sufi Band and we do gigs in clubs in and around Delhi .

Reasons to do an MBA-Want to expand my area of expertise and gain holistic knowledge of how organizations work.Want to specialize in Operations . Post-MBA, looking for a Strategic kind of role in the Ops/Supply Chain side of a business

I'm not sure as to which schools would be a good fit for me.I want to work in Asia, and hence, looking at INSEAD Singapore , NUS Singapore ,

P.S : I had applied to ISB Last year . Got a ding after the interview . They said My GMAT was on the lower side in my feedback post the results ( Had applied last year with 670 , retook but could only manage a 680

You have a good profile with leadership potential. ISB focusing more on GMAT than holistic profile. So, better not to apply ISB this year and to apply NUS or INSEAD Singapore Campus.

Post-MBA Goals:
Strategy Consulting.
Throughout my varied roles so far, I have served clients across levels in different capacities, with highly successful results (can get stellar recommendations from them)
With my experience as a creative strategist + analyst, I bring a balanced combination of creativity & analytics, and I feel i would be well-suited to a consulting role.

I have 12 months before submitting my application. Would love to hear about my chances of getting an admit (I am open to applying in Early action), or how I could bolster my application (particularly the quant aspect) in this period.

Would an HBS CORe course help here?

Pakistani, male, 25 years.

GMAT - 600 (Q44, V28, IR 7)

Olevel - 7A*1A
Alevel - 4A*
Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering - 3.50 CGPA - National University of Sciences and Technology. Graduated top 15% of the batch. This is the top ranked engineering school in Pakistan.
Active participation in student clubs and organizations, leading a couple of them and holding major positions in arranging key events.

Work Exp - 03 years (as of August 2020) in product management across 2 organizations and several product portfolios.
1st being Dawlance, a local leader in the consumer electronics industry. I was actively involved in several innovative products' launches and the introduction of an entire portfolio altogether. Collaborated with teams in Turkey, China and Pakistan.
The 2nd, and current, organization is samsung electronics. Currently working as a product manager for LED TVs for the country, having previously been the product manager of refrigerator and washing machine. Not a promotion per say, and more of a role change, but could be taken as one if one considers the appointment at the core division.

Social work:
Worked for StreetStore - a charity organization. Assisted them in fundraising and sat up a street store event where clothes were distributed among underprivileged families.

Worked as a writer for Humans of Pakistan for over an year - helping portray a positive image of the society.

Currently a Green Card holder for WWF - a donation membership that works towards improving atmosphere and the needy people associated with it. I'm part of the Air project, where projects are carried out to improve air quality.

Reasons for MBA - At my current career stage, and the path I've chosen, a management degree (read MBA) makes a lot of sense for further growth and career development, and learning - given that I come from a technical background. An MBA would add on to my current experience and better equip me to take on senior positions in strategy/consulting/management.

Post-MBA goals - Move into management consulting. Also open to staying in project management.

I understand that the GMAT score is extremely low, and to be honest I'd given up on applying for this year's admissions. But I used the profile evaluation tool here and it actually showed I had above average chances for Said (and Rotman, among others). I also found out that Said has been accepting as low as 580 and 510 in the previous years. Hence the silly evaluation post with this GMAT.

Appreciate your feedback on the profile and suggestions towards next steps.

Also, what would be alternate decent schools (UK/Canada)?

Hi Chirag,

You have a good score and a strong academic background. Since your background is both creative and analytical you won't be clubbed with the high scoring Indian Male IT background. Your current GMAT score is good to apply.

Do avoid switching jobs now if you can, since you have recently switched to a fintech firm(This can help you build relevant experience towards your post MBA goals)

Think more on the connect to your post MBA goals with your work-ex. You mentioned consulting as a goal, what about your long term goals?

For your quant score, I don't think its too bad. In case you still feel its an area of concern for you, showcase your analytical skills in your essays.

I think your chances are good depending on your essays, recommendations and interviews.

Good luck with your application.

Oxford is an amazing place.
