Hi all, Just received an interview offer from Stern (super excited!). Does anyone have any insight into the virtual interview option? It would be *possible* but quite difficult for me to interview in person before February because of work. How does the Stern adcom view virtual interviews vs in-person interviews? Do they have a strong preference?
Edit: For background, I was an R2 applicant.
Congratulations on your interview! Going to your interview in person is the best strategy. It will show that you care about prioritizing the interview because you are willing to take on the extra costs. This is especially the case with a school like NYU Stern which in some ways is just as competitive as a top 7 school but has lower yield (% of accepted candidates who enroll at NYU). Schools like Harvard don't have to worry as much about students choosing them versus other schools (HBS has a ~90% yield). But NYU *does* have to worry about this, as many students who are admitted to Stern have the choice of others schools. Yield is an important determining factor for ranking, and ranking matters a great deal to AdComs. Therefore, AdComs are selecting for students who REALLY want to attend NYU. You can *signal* this by going to the interview in person and being exceptionally prepared for why NYU is the perfect school for you. You need to know what resources you'll be tapping into to achieve your goals (classes, professors, clubs, other student-groups) and how you'll contribute to the Stern community inside and outside of the classroom. You'd also be wise to tap into your personal and linkedin network for interview help. You'd be surprised how many Stern people will want to help you.
