The following appeared in a research paper written for an introductory economics course:
“For the past century, an increase in the number of residential building permits issued per month in a particular
region has been a reliable indicator of coming improvements to that region’s economy. If the monthly number of
residential building permits issued rises consistently for a few months, the local unemployment rate almost always
falls and economic production increases. This well-established connection reveals an effective method by which a
regional government can end a local economic downturn: relax regulations governing all construction so that many
more building permits can be issued.”
According to a research published by the introductory economics course, it was mentioned that for the past century, increase in the number of residential building permit issued per month by the government has been reliable indicator of economic growth in that region. Therefore, it has been decided by the government to give large no of residential building permit to tackle issues of employment. The reason stated in the argument is not well reasoned.
First, the argument assume that the number of residential permits per month in any region is a reliable indicator of improvement to region’s economy. The author assumes by creating pool of resident will automatically cater to region’s economy based to the study. But, fails to account that by giving residential permits per month will create army of unemployed, rather focus should also shift towards creating industry, jobs, agriculture and logistics to achieve desired results. Therefore, it can be said that scope of the assumption is narrow as it rely on short time period of few months.
Second, the argument states that by giving more no. of residential building permits, the problems of decrease in the no. of employment and economic turndown can be rectified by government. The reason stated in the argument is not well reasoned as it fails to account for the any specifics such as inflation, of no. of opportunity created by the government, entrepreneurship venture introduced, jobs created for skilled and unskilled population. If the argument would have shown that other factors concerning the rise of unemployment have negligible impact that stated argument would have been much more convincing.
Thereby, by assuming that economy will get boost simply by giving more no of residential building permits is flawed and unconvincing. Therefore the author should have presented the argument will statistical analysis, that employment opportunities will be created by giving more house permits for few months.
