Hi GmatBattle !

Thanks for the reply. Yes Indeed there was a phase in my quant preparation (a month back) when I was only solving the tough questions(700 and above ) but not in timed manner.Every where on forums people suggest while building concepts don't worry about time, so while solving these tough questions I gave my self the liberty of time. This way I was able to solve them and grasp the underlying concept as well. I did these questions because I found that OG questions were rather easy and didn't want to leave any stone un-turned in my preparation. I was under the impression that if I practice hard questions , then It'll make me more adept at tackling the section with ease. And I believe only these few- rather tough questions are the ones that separate someone getting 47-48 from someone getting 50-51 in quant. But now the problem is whenever I am solving 30 Quant questions from Veritas Question bank (free online) under timed manner , I am not able to solve these tough questions (which are mostly 5-6 in number ,rest are pretty easy) even in 5 minutes. And moreover whole timing thing and my confidence too gets screwed up, leading to a failure in solving even average questions in time.
Please suggest some approach to improve from this point. How should I move ahead in my preparation now. I need to score 51 in quant.

Thanks.

I totally understand what you are saying. Yes it is said to focus on building the concepts (FIRST) and not care about time. However, it is in the initial stages of preparation. Because thats when it makes sense. U see, if u are praticing tough questions then you already have covered the basics. Right? So you do not need to give yourself alott of extra time. I think using that approach you have gotten accustomed to working a little slowly. Also, dude u wont get every question right in 2 mins even if u score 800. If u can't slove it in under 2.5 min, move on. Don't worry too much about the tough ones. Just go on vertias and try to finish 10 questions in 20 minutes. U may have to guess or skip on one or 2 and that's okay. And slowly move to 37 ques (75min).
And start doing practice tests.
I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised with your GMAT score.
Best of luck. :-D
Kudofy me if you find it helpful.

Hi,

In reference to the Quant, I can provide you some tips specifically on integrated reasoning:

The changes to the new GMAT are relatively minor. The new GMAT replaced one of the two essays from the AWA with a new integrated reasoning section. 90% of what you will have already learned will be valid for the new section. You will only need to spend a few more hours to learn the new Integrated Reasoning section. It is a short section, not even as close in time and effort as the verbal or quant require.

According to mba.com (you can also watch some videos on the IR section and get additional info here) the Integrated Reasoning section consists of one 30-minute section, made up of 12 questions stemming from 4 question types. A prompt or question type might have multiple questions that go with it. There may also be a necessity for switching between ’tabs’ within a question prompt/type. Basically these new question types are graphic in nature and require, for the most part, an ability to analyze data (words, charts, graphs, etc) in order to come up with key insights that require math skills and verbal skills.

The IR section in the exam is not part of the 200-800 score and is non-adaptive. It is graded separately on a scale of 1 to 8. More importantly, it is very possible that many schools will not look at that section as important for now, as it will probably take them some time to determine what an appropriate score is for their particular programs. However, please check with the school programs you are applying to. Most schools have not posted how much they wish to see on the IR section because this does not seem to be a concern for now. Do check though.

Your job is to try to do the best you can there but the concentration should still be on the Verbal and Quant sections. The good news is that you do not need much new raw knowledge but rather you need to become familiar with the question types and practice a bit there so there are no surprises. This section has more of a 'wow' factor as it is graphic and the questions are very different than what has come before so this is what scares people but it shouldn't because of the reasons outlined above.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Evan

Thanks Evan for the great advice on IR.
Evan, I am currently facing difficulties with the Quant section. I am facing challenge in solving questions under 2 minutes and am also struggling with the accuracy, which is in fact pivotal to touch 50-51 mark . I have already covered the entire quant section from OG13 and other sources of similar difficulty. I went a step further and solved questions with higher difficulty level from other sources.Recently I did some analysis and found that I am finding number system and probability(P&C) the most challenging. Can you suggest how I can improve in these areas.I have put up a lot of hard work ,but unfortunately I still don't see that I am prepared to nail the Quant section. My target is 740+, so that means I ought to get at least 50 in quant. Please suggest how I should prepare from this point onward and the material I should refer to ,as I have exhausted all the practice problems I had. What can be the best way forward. I have one month for GMAT.

Thanks in advance.

Hi again!
I'm glad I was able to help a little. In regards to the questions you just asked me, that is not my area of expertise and I do not want to provide you with vague answers. I would suggest that you repost your questions in the Quantitative section of the GMATClub Forum. Here is a link: gmat-quantitative-section-7/
You will be more likely to get the answers your looking for in that specific forum.
Have a great day and good luck!
