Many skin-whitening creams and similar cosmetics utilize heavy metal compounds to block the production of the skin pigment melanin. The metal compounds bleach the skin by destroying melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, lightening the skin’s tone. Critics fear that exposure to these compounds could have numerous negative health effects, including a heightened risk of skin cancer, but a defender responds, “The average dose of metal compounds absorbed via skin-whitening creams is less than what one might absorb from a few minutes of exposure to gasoline smoke. Using these creams will not hurt anyone.”

Which of the following issues would it be most important to resolve in evaluating the dispute concerning the health effects of the skin-whitening creams?

A. Whether the creams affect all areas that they are applied to equally
B. Whether treatments for hyperpigmentation disorders use metal compounds to reduce melanin production
C. Whether the typical amount described by the defender is the amount absorbed via one use or a cumulative amount, absorbed over a lifetime
D. The cultural impact of skin-whitening creams
E. Whether the skin-whitening creams were tested for safety on a broad cross-section of the population

Prosecutor: The current Mayor of Tivo was elected in 2015. Each year since then, at least seven companies have been prosecuted for violating anti-pollution laws. In 2015, under the previous mayor, only two companies were prosecuted for violating anti-pollution laws. So, the previous mayor was more tolerant of polluters than the new one is.

Journalist: But in 2015, far fewer companies actually violated the anti-pollution laws, and now many more companies regularly do so.

The journalist challenges the prosecutor’s argument by doing which of the following?

A) Including data from further into the past than the prosecutor’s data
B) Highlighting that the argument illegitimately forms a general conclusion with a sample of only a few cases as a basis
C) Challenging the veracity of the evidence presented in support of the conclusion reached by the prosecutor
D) Introducing evidence that undercuts an assumption in the argument made by the prosecutor
E) Stating that the argument assumes that information about some members of a group applies to all members of that group

A community theater sold tickets for the same show in January and in February. In January, every ticket was sold at the same fixed price, whereas in February, the ticket price increased, and every ticket was sold at the same higher fixed price. If fewer tickets were sold in February than in January, was the revenue from ticket sales in February greater than the revenue from ticket sales in January?

(1) The percent increase in the ticket price from January to February was equal to the percent decrease in the number of tickets sold from January to February.

(2) If the percent increase in the ticket price from January to February had been 8 percentage points greater than it actually was, while the percent decrease in the number of tickets sold remained the same, then the revenue from ticket sales in February would have been equal to the revenue from ticket sales in January.

The town of Costaguana has many residents who are committed to supporting businesses that follow fair labor practices. Soon these consumers will be assisted in identifying such businesses by a catalogue published by the Humanitarian Society of Costaguana. The catalogue offers a comprehensive listing, by industry and company name, of businesses in Costaguana that follow fair labor practices. Therefore, publication of the catalogue will almost certainly increase the customer base of such businesses in Costaguana.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

A. Sales of the catalogue are not expected to generate more in revenue than publishing the catalogue will cost.
B. Many businesses that follow fair labor practices vary the stringency with which they adhere to those practices in response to changes in the availability of labor.
C. For many services, such as construction, following fair labor practices results in a different work structure with a correspondingly different utility for the customer.
D. For many types of industries listed in the catalogue, all the businesses operating in Costaguana follow fair labor practices.
E. Within numerous types of industries, there are many companies that follow fair labor practices, although they do nothing to advertise this fact.

Premature hair loss can often be traced back to skin irritation caused by any number of environmental factors. However, removing the factors that led to skin irritation from the environments of the afflicted frequently does not stop the balding. Obviously, some other cause for premature balding besides skin irritation caused by environmental factors must exist.

Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the conclusion above?

A. Very few people suffering from premature hair loss caused by skin irritation regain their lost hair after eliminating the environmental factors that led to skin irritation.
B. Some individuals never experience premature balding despite exposure to environmental factors that irritate their skin.
C. Many people report that the environmental factors that irritate their skin are the ones that are most difficult to avoid.
D. Many common environmental factors generally begin to irritate the skin a few hours after actually coming into contact with them, making it difficult to observe links between specific environmental factors and the balding.
E. Very rarely does skin irritation caused by environmental factors cause a condition more severe than premature balding.
