Hi yahikaaggarwal,

I agree that since you are asking an admissions based question, you may find it helpful to reach out to one of the many admissions consultants here on GMAT club. Also, have you started studying for your GMAT?

Yes, I started my preparation 2 weeks back itself. Just wanted to know that will the good GMAT score will land me the ivy league schools or not. And what will be the best approach to get on the board with top ivy leagues.

Hi yashikaaggarwal,

Highly-competitive Schools tend to have AVERAGE GMAT Scores in the low-700s, but the exact Average will vary depending on the specific Programs that you're interested in. It's also worth noting that an AVERAGE Class Score is NOT a "requirement" for Admission - and if you know how to calculate an Average, then you can infer that lots of people get into top MBA Programs with GMAT Scores that are 'below Average' for that Program.

Since it sounds like you're early-on in your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can take 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Thank You for reverting back.
First of all. I am targeting M7 just like everyother management student wishes to. Target score will be above than 750+
Since I don't have any sorta work experience I am looking forward for deffered MBA program. Especially the 2+2 program of Harvard (Dream College).
I will try to give my exam before may 15 to send my application can June 1. But if that didn't go well. I will be joining job as soon as I can preparing GMAT side by side.
I get to know I can appear before September to be counted among round 1 applicant so thought to give it in last week of july or first week of August. I am trying to solve questions at minimal time possible before giving mock. Will try to give mock to analyze my progress till yet as soon as I can. :)

Hi yashikaaggarwal,

To start, the 750+ score is approximately the 98th percentile - meaning that 98% of Test Takers never score that high (regardless of how long they study or the number of times that they take the GMAT). Thankfully, NO Business School requires a score that high - so it's important to realize that the score that you "want" and the score that you "need" are not the same thing. There's no harm in making that your Score Goal though - and once we have your first practice CAT results, we can put together an appropriate study plan for you.

Hi yashikaaggarwal,

To start, it would be a good idea for you to take a full-length practice GMAT to get a baseline score. Would you be able to do so and report back with your score breakdown?

I just finished my mock and scored Q40 and V18(surely the worst ever score ever got in language). But considering I hadn't studied a bit about GMAT verbal, it will be of great help if you could tell what should be my next move. Thank You in advance

Hi yashikaaggarwal,

Many Test Takers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That Q40/V18 is just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam. That having been said, raising that Score to the point that you can score in the 700s will likely require at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

With a planned Test Date before May 15th, you would have no more than about 1.5 months of possible study time though - and that type of score improvement in such a relatively short amount of time is probably too difficult to be considered realistic. While I understand that you want to apply as soon as possible, you have to remember your REAL Goal: to get into your first-choice Program. To achieve that ultimate goal, you're going to have to give yourself enough time to put together the strongest application possible - and you might want to consider pushing back your planned Test Date (to late July or August - as you mentioned - which would give you a much better chance to improve).

1) What is the minimum GMAT Score that you would apply with?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Thank You for acknowledging again.
I am planning to apply with the minimum score of 710 or 720.
Moreover I haven't started studying verbal as for now. But I m sure I will be solving Verbal from today onwards. To get the desirable score.
I am studying on an average of 9 hours a day that gives me 60 hours a week. Given the country is on lockdown. Nor I have anywhere to be, I am Fully focusing on preparation now. Hopefully I will be able to improve score earlier than predicted. Thank You.

Hi yashikaaggarwal,

Going forward, you have to be careful about confusing "quantity" of study with "quality" of study. I've never asked anyone to study 40+ hours a week - and while it's great that you might have the available time to study that much, with that number of study hours, you would run the risk of 'burning out' before Test Day (and that is something that we want to avoid). If you are going to try to study that much, then I suggest that you take one hour "off" for every two hours of study. For example, you could study for 2 hours, then stop for an hour, then study for another 2 hours, then take an hour off, etc.

I suggest that you study as you choose for the next 2-3 weeks, then take a NEW, FULL-LENGTH CAT/mock - and make sure to take it in a realistic fashion (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.). Once you have that score, you should report back here and we can discuss the restyles and how you might best adjust your studies (if needed).
