Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am interested in getting an MBA to move from the public to the private sector. Below are details of my profile.

Keep in mind I am a white male

Target schools: HBS, Stanford, Yale, Northwestern, U of Chicago
Target industries: Investment banking, fin-tech, tech in general

GMAT---760
IR- 2
Quant- 48
Verbal-46
AWA- 6

GPA:
3.2 Undergrad GPA
Undergrad majors: Double Major in Political Science and Communication
From top 20 public university
3.85 Grad School GPA
Program: Master in Public Administration from top 10 school

Career:
4.5 years work experience
Director of Communications for a Member of US Congress

Extracurriculars:
Board-member of a membership organization
Part of Mentorship program
Coached youth basketball for two years in college
Completed a National Security course

[color=#662d91]Given your overall high score, I would spend my extra time really getting to know the schools in your top preference set- visit them, talk to students, understand why you fit and how you can add value.
If you think you multitask well, and if you want to apply to a top MBA program you should be able to multitask! So work on your GMAT too if you can since these schools on your list are very choosy- but I think you time is overall best spent on a compelling application at this point.[color=#662d91]

Hi jmoney44!

Thank you for sharing your profile with us. As someone who has worked for a congressman myself, I can say that you have a really interesting background.

It is definitely less common to see this background in my class at HBS, but I know the admissions committee would your work experience as prestigious and worthwhile. It all comes down to how you (1) paint a vision for what you were doing in congress (see the parable of the three stonecutters), (2) argue for your ability to achieve the transition you seek to make through business school, and (3) craft your personal narrative. Personally I think you have a great chance at getting into one or more of HBS, Stanford, Yale, Northwestern, and U Chicago.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi there,

What happened with your IR buddy ? Just check with your target school's GMAT requirements. Although, no one has yet stated their minimum IR requirements except for INSEAD, 2 is really low.
Apart from this I think you're an excellent candidate. Prepare your applications well and you should be able to get in.

Best,

Thanks for the response! I am a bit nervous now because my IR score was so low, even though I was told it didn't matter. I didn't study IR at all! Do you think I should retake the GMAT to boost my IR score or will the top schools not care too much?

Thanks for your advice!

Hi,

If I were you I wouldn't take the test again just to improve my IR. But I would have a smart answer ready to explain the huuuuuuuge contrast. :-D

Best,
