Hi all - I am considering applying to an MBA program in 2025. Based on my preliminary research, I have compiled a list of business schools where I believe I may have a realistic chance of admission. I would appreciate input from experts here to assess whether I am on the right track. Additionally, I am open to seeking professional assistance from consultants if they believe I have a chance of being accepted to the below-mentioned business schools.

Profile: Age: 28 (at program start)
Gender: Male
Country: India
Work Experience: 5 years (at program start)
GRE: 159 Verbal, 170 Quant
TOEFL: 110
Undergraduate GPA: 8.1/10 in Mechanical & Automation Engineering from a Tier 3 college in India
Current Industry: Tier 2/3 Consulting
Short-Term Goal: Transition into strategy-based Tier 1 Consulting (MBB)
Long-Term Goal: Establish my own firm

Further Details on Work Experience: I am currently working as an Associate Consultant at ZS Associates, I am team lead on a project aimed at synthesizing insurer data with health organizations. This project, for a Fortune 50 client, is a multi-million dollars program. I manage a team of 8 individuals from offshore. The project impact will means a better tracking of transactions and more apt business decisions for billions of USD worth of sales every year.

Prior to this role, I worked for two years in capacity of a Business Systems Analyst, collaborated with individuals representing over 200 countries. My responsibilities included gathering requirements and devising solutions for affiliates. I received firm-wide recognitions as awards and a fast-track promotion for my contributions.

I have also had the opportunity to work in the United States for three weeks during a project go-live, with plans to return for a month by the end of this year. However, my overall international work experience amounts to less than six months. Additionally, I have obtained letters of recommendation from partners within the firm.

Extracurricular Activities: During my undergraduate studies at a Tier 3 college, I actively participated in the club responsible for organizing festivals. While my involvement in extracurriculars is limited, I did receive a grant of $1000 (equivalent to my yearly fees) in late 2019 for a project, which unfortunately couldn't be completed due to Covid-19 lockdowns.

I am also working on my startup right now, the website I am developing leverages GenAI and will help students who prepare for competitive exam in India. I have a working prototype and plan to have a go-live by end of June 24. Regarding CSR, I participate in ZSCares Day, a program initiated by my current firm aimed at community service, we do variety of activities in it, like setting up educational camps etc. But I am not associated to any NGO nor I do any communicty service at National level.

Colleges I intend to apply to:

  • Tepper
  • Kelly
  • NUS Singapore
  • Foster
  • Rotman
  • Said Oxford
Dream College if I have the chance:

  • Yale SOM
Please feel free to recommend any other B-School, I am still in the exploring phase.

Hi sarthakrn,

Your profile on the surface looks good.
Breaking your profile into 3 sections:

Academics: Excellent GRE scores. Your CGPA works fine in your favor.
ECs: They act like extra support to your overall profile, complimenting the right skillsets you present in your applications. Hence, if they can be done regularly, it's best.
Work experience: 5 years of work experience is perfect to show in your MBA applications. However, it seems like your work is all over the place which with the right guidance and strategy can help you get into your target and dream schools.

Our MBA consultants have varied experiences in helping clients across diverse backgrounds and limitations. Since you're exploring, you can schedule a free consultation with them and know about your next steps at length.

You can also connect with them directly via call at +91 7780769732

@sarthakrn - interesting profile overall. Some thoughts:

1. Your GRE score and GPA are good angles. Any precedence of your undergrad seniors entering Top-20 MBA programs? This datapoint can help assess chances better.

2. Your professional experience is interesting given the consulting/ international exposure and ZS brand. We've worked with candidates with similar backgrounds, who got into Top-20 MBA programs. Check out some recent success stories here and here

3. Having transitioned to management consulting post-MBA myself, I can tell you that the plain vanilla pitch of "I want to get into MBB" doesn't work. It'd be crucial to have a strong narrative linking your experiences and skill-sets to well-defined career goals, and how/ why an MBA would help you now.

4. Extracurriculars present interesting angles for essays. Recency, consistency and impact are key here: B-schools care about what you would potentially bring to their community/ clubs etc. both during and after MBA.

Hope this helps a bit. Prioritizing B-schools would need further discussions along several dimensions listed here, and hence I refrain from speculating on a random shortlist. Broadly though, top B-schools for consulting careers (along with latest hiring stats) are here.

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Arvind

Hi Sathkarn,

Tepper (as stretch), Kelley and NUS may work. Foster nowadays expects high test scores - which you do have. Expect it to be competitive though.

Rotman and Oxford will require something very spiky in your profile - in addition to good work experience. Hard to say if what you have will fit the bill or not - need to apply and see.

Reach out if you want to chat: https://bit.ly/GM_AugAcd_Profile_Evaluation
