Demographic: East Asian Canadian 29 Male
Background/Work: Looking to apply to a US MBA to pivot to Consulting/Tech (not sure how plausible that is without any tech experience) and relocate to the US from Toronto. Long story short, 5 years of Non-traditional Accounting work experience (i.e. not Audit/Tax), specifically in the Real Estate space, and realizing that this field isn't really for me. 1 year as a corporate accountant at a F500 Real Estate company, 4 years at a publicly traded Canadian REIT as a Property accountant > Senior Property Accountant. CPA (Canada) designated. Hoping to be admitted for Fall 2023.
Recently accepted a job offer for a SFA-equivalent role at a much smaller local investment firm which specializes in REIT investments - Decision was made mainly because of 1) Pick up some new experience and to get a little further away from Accounting and 2) Total comp. was a significant bump from current role at time of writing. However i'm hearing some feedback from peers that from a, "MBA Application" POV, this may not be in my best interest as the company I will be joining will be much smaller and "less credible". Obviously this is not a make or break deal for MBA admissions but I should be targeting F500 companies instead, however given the relatively short time frame between now and my goal of being admitted for Fall of 2023, I'm not sure how likely it is, or necessary it would be to, for me to secure a similar role at a large company.
Aside from the obvious matter of taking a substantial paycut if i were to work in a different industry, I've also realized having worked in such a niche and specific area of Accounting that i'm essentially pigeon-holed into the Real Estate Sector, which doesn't exactly account for a whole lot of companies in the F500.
Prior to accepting this job offer, I had also considered taking some coding/data science/data analytics bootcamps/classes to dabble into my potential interest in pivoting into tech. Still open to this idea but wanted to see how the first couple of week/month unfolds first
Would like to hear some thoughts on this matter
GMAT: 710 (1st try, looking to attempt again for a higher score)
Undergraduate: University of Toronto - Accounting specialization, 3.1 GPA
Reach Schools: Any M7
Target Schools: UCLA, Cornell, Tuck
Extracurricular activities: Not a whole lot, currently the captain of a Basketball Team in a recreational league but not even sure if that would count for a whole lot. Wasn't sure if picking up volunteer work for the sake of volunteer work would be worthwhile...would like to also know how i can improve in this area
Would really appreciate any tips and advice on how I can best strengthen my profile at this point in time as I know I still have some time to do so.
