I am a 23 year old Indian male working as a Regional Head at TVS Tyres. I recently scored 334 in GRE (GMAT equivalent 770) and wish to understand my chances.
Plusses:
1. I am a graduate of IIT (BHU) Varanasi having done my Btech in Chemical Engineering.
2. I also am an IIM Kashipur Graduate completed post graduate diploma in management specialising in Marketing.
3. In just a year's experience I have been promoted to Regional Head for East. I handle a team of more than 10 salesmen.
4. I was an exchange students at EM Normandie Caen having done a project (not intern) for European Giant Geodis.
5. My entire student life has been inclined towards marketing with decent leadership experience - Marketing Head for College annual Sports and Cultural fest (of IIT), Co-convener for IIT BHU MUN, placement committee member at IIM Kashipur.
6. At work, I have become the youngest Regional head with the nearest being at least 20 years older to me. i have worked in a variety of functions including branding, exports and MIS.
7. I have excellent competitive academic track record. I scored 99%ile in JEE-09, 99.28%ile in CAT-13 and 334 in GRE.
8. I can arrange for excellent recommendations: 1. CMO of my present firm, 2. ex-military captain who I report to in my company, 3. top grade professors of my esteemed alma mater
9. I have lived in more than 12 states in India. This is a huge factor which I wish to explore on in the interview as every single state is almost like a different country in India.
Negatives:
1. I already have an MBA equivalent. Sole reason for an outside MBA is I missed out on crucial marketing courses when I was on exchange program. Besides I wish to change my field from product based marketing to service marketing / branding. My present industry growth is also severely limited geographically to tier-2 Indian cities.
2. I have only a year's experience, will be 1.5 years when I apply this year and nearly 2 years when I join the course, that is if I get selected.
3. I dont have any public service certifications
4. I have average grade points. 88% in 10th Std, 75% in 12th Std, 7.7 at B.Tech., 6.91 at IIM. But I have reasonable justifications for all.
I was initially confused between Masters in Management courses and MBA programs (double MBA of course). But I understand that MiM programs get you into lower management jobs which I am not interested in, already attaining middle management status in present job. Thus, I wish to go for a double MBA. Given below is a list of my target colleges/courses:
1. Harvard - MBA
2. Wharton - MBA
3. Kelloggs - MMM course
4. Stanford - MBA
5. HEC Paris - MBA
Here is a list of questions which really confuse me:
1. Is my work experience too low to apply to these courses?
2. Should I apply to these courses this year? If no, when should I ideally apply?
3. Does my GRE score/esteemed alma mater help me compensate for lack of work exp?
4. Does the leadership role I am in help me getting through these colleges' interviews?
5. Are my target colleges over stretched? What should I add further to my profile for it to be relevant to these colleges?
6. What should my target colleges/courses be if I want to apply this year?
Post MBA aims:
- I have forever and ever been interested in branding. Designing ATL marketing campaigns and then executing them in different markets was my aim when i thought to pursue an MBA. But I never got such a work opportunity after my MBA. There is no way such an opportunity can arrive for me seeing my present work profile without an MBA.
- To narrow it further more, I wish to be a branding associate for a luxury brand, thence the choice of HEC Paris.
- The market for luxury brands is still developing in India. Thus, I wish to work a few years in the Fashion capitals like New York, Paris or Milan get handy experience and then settle in India in later stages of my career.
- Alternatively, I am also interested in Sports team marketing. I dont have enough understanding as to how one would get into such a field. Lifetime aim remains to become the marketing head for an internationally acclaimed Sports club.
