Hi there!
I'm jumping in since Jen is traveling this week.
Yes, in general, it's always smart to have 1 or 2 safety schools in mind on your list. You could even save these for Round 2, but it doesn't hurt to do a little research on them early on.
Many applicants find it to be a great deal of work, so even starting early, most do 4-6 schools in Round 1, and then perhaps another 2-3 in Round 2 that they get started on and may not submit depending on Round 1 results. If you start early and are very organized doing more than that is certainly possible, but 4-6 is what we typically see works best.
Good luck!

Thanks, I appreciate your help! Another question: should I put some safety schools on my list? I feel it would be arrogant for me to assume that I'm going to get into one of these top schools, even if I have reasons to be hopeful.
Also, would it be unrealistic to try to apply to 6-8 schools in Round 1? I don't really know how long the applications would take, but I figure that there will be a lot of overlap between the essays, and maybe even the recommendations.
Obviously I don't have to think about the logistics of the application process for a while, but your advice would be appreciated.
