Hi Conquistador23,

A high GMAT will be very helpful (and what many might label top US programs usually have higher averages than 700) but is not the only thing that counts. Your grades also matter, although they also will certainly consider what school you have this from, and what the norms are for that program; international programs (since you're quoting a TOEFL I am thinking this is not a US undergrad degree) or certain subjects may have tougher standards than the usual profile. A Master's in Finance with a 4.0 is a good counterweight to your low GPA, but keep in mind that schools will wonder why you need an MBA on top of that. Another point is that you have 10 years of experience, so you might see that they wonder whether you're more suited for an EMBA or another kind of degree (mid-career program perhaps?). Articulating your background, showing your fit with their program, explaining why you need an MBA and how you will use it for your goals, and excellent execution on the app all will help you! Scholarships can be challenging and different schools have different pools of funds available for scholarships, which they aren't always very open about. Generally speaking, schools tend to be more generous when you are helping their averages or providing needed diversity or point of view. My advice is to do as well as you can on the GMAT and the apps, and apply broadly, including programs where you are above the norms, and perhaps look at lower-cost programs in other countries that may be more affordable or shorter. Best of luck!

Warmly,

Hi,

It would be helpful if you could mention which country you are looking to apply to. B-schools around the world have different preferences and eligibility criteria which you may need to cross-check.

10 years of experience with a Master's degree can be viewed as both a positive and a negative depending on how you tell your story. European B-schools will be lenient towards your profile and may overlook the lower academic scores if they value your overall story. US and Canadian b-schools however will want to understand how you will fit into their classrooms and how you can bring value.

You have a decent profile and there will definitely be a lot of scope for scholarships and fee waivers. However, you need to understand and explain your motivations better about why you want to go for an MBA now and what you want to do later in your career. We would suggest discussing with admissions consultants and alumni members of your target B-schools to understand your journey better and tell the right story in your application.

Your GRE score is okay but if you are attempting the GMAT you should try and aim for a 700+ score. However, you should not delay your applications for too long as you are already in the upper age bracket for full-time MBA programs.
