I will go with A.

B. qrong tense.
C. "as is" is wrong.
D. changes the meaning. implying that they appear same as what they appeared when we saw them during formation of universe (where were we then? )

A it is.

Can someone throw some light on using tenses? Whats the conceptual difference bewteen were and had been?
Any good material to master this tense stuff? Thanks!

Shud be A.
Here, we cannot go for 'had been' because a past participle comes in to picture only with a past tense in the sentense. The sentense doesnot have a past tense but has a present tense. Hence, a simple past will do.
