I am doing an exmaple from Barron's.
median temp was 86F and range is 18F
SO, the median is calculates as C=5/6 x (F-32) - which i understand.
but for the range,he says it will just be 5/9 x 18)
and it explains: Notice that you do not subtract 32 since adding or subtracting the same amount from each temp will not change the range.
I dont understand this. My thinking is: whatever the temp is in F to convert to C, we need 5/9 x (F-32)
can someone explain this please?
Hi
Mansoor50 ,
Consider it like this,
2,4,5,6,9,15. Range = 15-2 = 13.
Now, let's add 1 to each of the terms.
So, the new series is:
3, 5,6,10,16. Range = 16-3 = 13.
You see when we added the same number to all the terms, the range is not affected.
Hence, this is what they are saying in case of Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion.
C=5/6 x (F-32)
or C=5/6 x F -
5/6 * 32Did you notice the bold part above? It is a subtraction of constant from the terms, similar to what we discussed above.
I hope that makes sense.
