I have a college junior with the following profile. He is confused if he should apply for there '23 intake or should he wait for another year?

1) Academics - BTech in Metallurgical Engineering - 7.9/10
2) GMAT: 750
3) Work ex: 25 months of experience till date. 24 months at Axxela Research and Analytics as a Market Analyst. Assisted in implementing algorithmic trading strategies using Python by employing technical indicators such as Supertrend and EMA to develop trading alphas for generating portfolio returns
Currently working at Barclays - Developing Pricing and Hedging models for OTC and ETD derivatives such as Interest Rate swaps, Credit Default Swaps, Structured products, Futures and Options, Bonds and Interest Rate products.
4) Basic college PORs and community service with an NGO for 2 years

Hello Shrey25,

Thanks for the query.

Your friend has a fine GMAT score and Barclays is a good brand to be working with.

Whether he should apply this year depends on how he sees his profile shaping up in the next year or so. If he is going to be exposed to leadership opportunities, international experience, and challenging projects, it might make sense to wait it out, add another year of experience (because 2 years is anyway on the lower side), and then apply. He can use the upcoming year to build his profile on other fronts as well while doing his research on prospective schools.

However, if the next year will not add anything major and might involve him doing the same things, he could look at applying to a few schools this year.

Good luck!

I am confused. He is a current college junior and has 24 months of work experience? Is this part-time experience? Can you clarify?

He's a bit on the younger side, which can impact the type of MBA programs that will consider him. An additional year or two of experience can vastly improve his chances of getting admitted.

Hi, Shrey25,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to say your friend did a great job backing a 750 in his GMAT; that's quite exceptional. Moreover, his overall GPA is ok. However, it would help if he could add some other academic statistics to the profile. Coming to the profile, I would like to say it's great how well you have mentioned your current and past roles & responsibilities. However, it's also important to add stellar leadership examples. What more I would like is for you to add any promotions, professional accolades, and any international exposure.

Regarding your ECAs, it's a bit brief; I would suggest elaborating on the challenges faced, the leadership roles played, the impact generated, and a little bit about the overall experience. A strong overall profile is a prerequisite for a top B-school, so I recommend adding any other certified courses and certifications to your profile to gain additional points.

All in all, a decent profile. However, it would help if you defined a relevant post-MBA goal. Work experience is less than the average required for business school; I suggest gaining more work experience, taking good leadership roles, and applying next year. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with your strategy for essays and interviews regarding MBA programs; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Hi Shrey25

The work experience is on the lower side for top business schools in the US. Average work experience in top US business schools is around 4 years.
The GMAT score is great. I would suggest that your friend starts working on improving his overall profile.
You can also get in touch with me and I can provide a free one on one consultation to you. We could discuss the profile at length and understand how strong your candidacy is currently.

Cheers,
Aseem
