Hi vaibhavijobalia,

Since you are asking an admissions-based question, you may find it helpful to reach out to one of the many admissions consultants here on GMAT Club. That said, if you do decide to retake the GMAT (to push for a 750), please reach back out, and I’d be happy to help.

Good luck!

Hello ,

I need an honest opinion on whether I should take the GMAT again.

Details :

GMAT : 710
Quant : 49
Verbal :39
IR :4 ( VERY LOW I KNOW)
AWA : 5.5

BACKGROUND :

BBA
MSU VADODARA - well reputed university
GPA : 6.1 /10

PGD in advertising and Marketing Communications from XIC Mumbai .
XIC ranks second in media communication in India .
Grade : B+

Work experience
2.5 years
1- self employed consultant
1.5 year - brand strategist at a national experimental agency
Worked on brands like HUL , SAP , SIEMENS , MONDELEZ, ORIFLAME and the likes of such.

*Not from conventional Indian background*

Indian female - media background
Age : 25

Post MBA goals : brand management / marketing - product management

If I take GMAT again , I would like to score somewhere near 750.

I realize that I lackwork experience and have decent EC ( NOT MENTIONED ) but how much of a difference would adding 40 more points make in this case ?

If I end up in the same colleges with a 750 due to lack of work ex then attempting GMAT again wont make sense.

So I need a review for the same.

Hello vaibhavijobalia,

Thanks for writing in.

A 40 point improvement makes a lot of sense especially considering you have a low GPA; a higher GMAT score will help instill confidence in the admissions committee with regard to your ability to adjust to the demands of a rigorous MBA program.

Having said the above, a lot will depend on the schools you are targetting; however, to cut a long story short, a higher GMAT score always adds value.

All the best!

Hello vaibhavijobalia,

Lets look at all the positive aspects of your profile first.

1. Your GMAT Score - Currently 710 and aiming for higher is a good thing. With a high GMAT score, you will have an edge over others.
2. Work experience - With 3.5 years(by the time you join the course) you need to show good progression with respect to the kind of projects you have worked on or the scale of the projects.

Areas were you need to focus on

Make sure you have a clear understanding of what skills have you gained over the last 3 years and how do you map it to your post MBA career goal. So bottomline if you can crack a 750 on your GMAT and can focus on your strengths in your applications you would have a shot at some good schools.

Hope this helps.

Shree

Hi Vaibhavi,

A higher GMAT will help, at all points in time. I would strongly encourage you to attempt a retake if you believe that there is scope for improvement.

Apart from this - my views on your profile:

1. We have worked with candidates with 2 - 2.5 years of work experience at the time of application (+1 at the time of enrolment). They have eventually made it to top 20 programs. The same should be possible for you also - it all depends on the quality of your work experience.

2. Having said this, one more year of experience might make your application easier.

3. Your one year as a self-employed consultant could be a good thing or a bad thing. If it is verifiable, and you have demonstrated that you've directly worked with clients, independently developed your product/service offerings, did market research, sales calls, etc., you would have excellent candidature. If this is not verifiable, then that is not such a good thing. The via-media approach would be where you worked for a larger organisation as an independent consultant rather than as an employee. That is the same as having worked as an employee.

Best,
Karthik
