Let Sam’s scores on his first test be F and on his second test be S.
Then, as per the information given in the question, two independent equations can be formed in terms of F & S.

He scored a total of 720, therefore, F + S = 720.

Thrice the score of his first test was 160 more than the score of his second test, therefore,
3F = S + 160

From the first equation, S = 720 – F. Substituting the value of S in the second equation, we have,
3F = 720 – F + 160

Collecting the variable terms on to the LHS and adding the constants, 4F = 880. Simplifying, we have F = 220.

Sam’s score on the first test was 220.
The correct answer option is A.

In terms of difficulty level, this does not really seem like a 700 level question. Bunuel, could you please verify and update?
