Hi,
I have a sentence correction question about relative pronouns but couldn't find an explicit answer from the
TTP lecture notes or in the SC forum. I recently took the GMAT exam and saw sentence structures like these following two examples. These are not the exact same sentences I saw during the exam. I recreated them using the same sentence structure.
I've purchased a vending machine that companyX produces and has a touch screen. I've purchased a vending machine companyX produces and that has a touch screen. Can which/that replace both a subject and an object in the same sentence? In the first sentence, the relative pronoun "that" replaces the object of "companyX produces" and the subject of "has a touch screen". And "that" is omitted before "has a touch screen". Is it okay to use the same relative pronoun as a subject and an object in one sentnece? Also, is it okay to skip the second "that"?
In the second sentence, the relative pronoun "that" doesn't appear before "companyX produces". Is this sentence correct? I believe the relative pronoun "that/which" can be omitted if it replaces the object of the sentnece but I'm not sure if it's okay to omit it for the first part "company X produces" and include it for the second part "has a touch screen". Does this violate parallelism?
Thank you so much.
