First I want to say thank you for taking the time to help me.
To answer your questions about me, I have only been studying for 2 weeks so far, and I have only been working on the Quant section so far. I worked through 1 books math review section and I am working through the GMAT Quantitative Review. I only took 1 CAT so far, and it was just the Quant section. I scored a 610 on that test, but it was with no review and I ran out of time and left questions blank. Once I finish this book (probably in 2 or 3 days), I will begin to look at the Verbal section too. I'm still in my undergrad so I wont be applying to grad schools for at-least 2 years, but I'm looking at top schools. I want to continue to practice over the next couple years until I'm really well honed for this test. I have been hitting the studying pretty hard so far, but once I build a good base knowledge I plan to just practice 1 hour per week every week until I am ready to take the test then I can do a quick cram.
I understand that my goal setting may seem odd, but it's actually not that weird. If you want to score at the 50th percentile, I imagine that you can achieve that by scoring in roughly the 50th percentile on each test. However, if someone wanted to score in the 99th percentile, I expect they might only need to score around the 96th percentile on each test. Or maybe you need to score around the 98th percentile on each test. Or maybe it's the 94th percentile. The point is, I don't know what percentile I need to be in on each test to score at the 96th percentile (730) to the 99th percentile (760). However, I just want to know where I need to be. My test performance is typically pretty reflective of my studying performance. I don't really get too nervous or if I do, I can handle it. So I can do a fairly good job judging when I am ready for the test... if I know how I need to do in each section to earn a 730 or a 760.
