Solution

To find:
• 7 is equal to how many thirds of 7

Approach and Working:
If we assume that 7 is equal to n-thirds of 7, we can rewrite the given statement in terms of the following expression:
• $$\frac{n}{3} * 7 = 7$$
Or, $$\frac{n}{3} = 1$$
Or, n = 3

Hence, the correct answer is option C.

No need for arithmetic or algebra. A whole divided into three parts has ... 3 parts

There are 3 one-third "parts" in any "whole," whether the whole = 1, 7, or 999,999

Alternatively, translate into an equation

N = "how many" = # of "thirds of 7"
"thirds of 7" = $$\frac{1}{3}*7$$

$$7=N*\frac{1}{3}*7$$
$$21=7N$$
$$N=3$$

7/(7/3) = 7 x 3/7 = 3

Alternate Solution:

Wording is most important in answering this question. The phrase “thirds of seven” simply means 1/3 of 7, which is (1/3) x 7, or 7/3.

Let’s let n = how many thirds of seven there are in seven. We can now express the question as:

7 = n x (7/3)

Multiplying both sides by 3/7, we obtain:

7 x (3/7) = n

3 = n
