Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-

Abhi077
Since implementing wiser technology management and a range of active learning projects, like challenging groups of students to research and discuss potential solutions to a relevant problem, the new high school has not only garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools but also spurred them to include these methods in their own classroom policies.

A. has not only garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools but also spurred them

B. has not only garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools, but it also spurred them

C. has not only garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools but also spurred these schools

D. not only has garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools but also these schools have been spurred

E. not only garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools, but it has also spurred them

Choice A: This answer choice contains a pronoun ambiguity error; it is unclear whether the pronoun "them" refers to "students" or "other schools". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice B: This answer choice fails to maintain the proper idiomatic construction "not only...but also", due to the inclusion of the word "it". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice C: This answer choice maintains proper parallelism, idiom construction, and pronoun use throughout the sentence. Thus, this answer choice is correct.

Choice D: This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between the verb "has garnered" and the noun "schools". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice E: This answer choice fails to maintain the proper idiomatic construction "not only...but also", due to the inclusion of the phrase "it has". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Hence, C is the best answer choice.

STEP 1- UNDERSTANDING INTENDED MEANING

By breaking the sentence in the following manner, we can best derive the intended meaning:

Since implementing wiser technology management and a range of active learning projects, like challenging groups of students to research and discuss potential solutions to a relevant problem,
the new high school has
not only garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools
but also
spurred them
to include these methods in their own classroom policies.

ERRORS:
1. “Them” is a pronoun used for a plural noun but there is an ambiguity as to its antecedent. Since there are two plural nouns preceding “them” -“students” and “schools” - this “them” could be referring to either or both of them.
2. Logically, the “them” should clearly refer to “schools” as it is the schools that could include policies and not the students.

INTENDED MEANING

• The new high school implemented wiser technology management and a range of active learning projects (an example has been given).
• Since the above implementation, the new high school has done achieved two things:
• It has received a significant amount of interest from students in other schools.
• It has also spurred these schools to include these methods in their own classroom policies

STEP 2 - ELIMINATE CHOICES WITH IDENTIFIED ERRORS

The following choice/s have one or more of the errors present in Choice A.
Choices B and E

STEP 3: EVALUATE MEANING OF REMAINING CHOICES

CHOICE C

Since implementing wiser technology management and a range of active learning projects, like challenging groups of students to research and discuss potential solutions to a relevant problem, the new high school has not only garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools but also spurred these schools to include these methods in their own classroom policies

1. Logical
2. Clear
3. Same as the intended meaning

Correct Choice.

CHOICE D

Since implementing wiser technology management and a range of active learning projects, like challenging groups of students to research and discuss potential solutions to a relevant problem, the new high school not only has garnered a significant amount of interest from students in other schools but also these schools have been spurred to include these methods in their own classroom policies

• “Not only….but also” are list markers and the entities in such a list should be parallel in grammatical construction and logic.
• However, the following spoil the parallelism.
• Subject – “new high school” is placed before “not only” and the verb “has garnered” comes after “not only”
• Subject – “these schools” is placed after “but also” and the verb “have been spurred” follows immediately after “these schools”.
.
Incorrect Choice.
