I would think you are definitely in the running for these deferred MBA programs.

You are right in your assessment. It's worth applying now and if you don't get in (given the difficulty) then definitely consider the normal process. Your profile will of course change as work experience starts to become a factor, but you can cross that bridge when you come to it.

If you'd like our help with your application, please sign up for a free consultation. Otherwise, good luck!

Hi maxpluez,

Thank you for sharing. From what you have detailed, your profile appears strong. Successful deferred MBA applicants will have already demonstrated considerable leadership through internships and extracurricular activities, either on or off-campus. It sounds like you have had some solid leadership experience via your extracurriculars and potentially your work experiences as well. Your GRE score should also situate you well.

As a deferred MBA candidate, you will want a clear sense of your career goals. Since deferred MBA programs are quite competitive, these goals are often best articulated after working with a consultant. While MIT is a great choice, we also recommend expanding your school list to 5 to 8 programs to maximize your chances of acceptance.

In terms of your concerns of being an Asian Canadian applicant, we can certainly help you differentiate yourself via your personal story. Personal MBA Coach started with the premise that everyone has a personal story and that the most successful candidates craft unique and compelling stories. This continues to be a cornerstone of our support and the area where we find our clients need the most guidance.

When Personal MBA Coach meets with a new candidate, we start by asking a lot of questions. We talk about everything the applicant has done, often starting from childhood. You should start with a similar process.

Make a list of everything you have done in your life and take the time to write it all down. Think carefully about the decisions you have made, activities you enjoy and, most importantly, why you made those choices.
Think about your future goals. What do you want to do after you earn your MBA and, again, why?
Next, look for a theme! What single idea connects items from #1 and #2? This is the hard part, so give it time.

Do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com to further discuss your application strategy. Personal MBA Coach's founder is an MIT Sloan grad and we help lots of folks get into Sloan each year! Take a look at our Deferred MBA Packages to learn more.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

I’m a senior at a T20 college studying computer science and engineering, and is looking for my chances at M7 deferred programs

Background:
1. T20 undergraduate senior, computer science and engineering major, film and television minor.
2. Asian Canadian (which seems to be a huge disadvantage being Asian and international)

Stats:
1. GPA: 3.93
2. GRE: 333(163V+170Q)+4.5W (took GRE with the plan of applying to dual MS programs)

Work Experience:
1 internship at a consulting firm, 2 SWE internships at startups, 1 SWE internship at an ex-unicorn startup that just recently IPO. (Will be returning as an FTE SWE.)
A part time job as IT support for 2 years.

Extracurricular:
1. Engineering Manager at one of the most prestigious dev clubs; won most innovative product for our project.
2. Tutoring/mentoring peers at honor society.
3. Volunteer at local elementary school.
4. Producer of an independent film (It goes along with my minor degree. It requires a lot of leadership but doesn’t fit my other tech profile)

Post MBA goal:
Tech management (PM and above)

My dream school is MIT Sloan since it offers the best dual MBA/MS program (LGO). Currently decided to apply to H S W Sloan and Haas. What’s my chance? Also looking for advice in general. Ofc, if my chance at a deferred program is slim, I will always be able to apply through the regular route years later :p

I believe digital transformation role is better fulfilled when I possess both technical and business in-depth knowledge. Understanding business terminology, challenges, functionality is much more than few articles/ books about the same. Working for more than a decade in technology makes me think from a technical perspective but to transform business, I need to understand business and learn how business leaders think. Being a technical person, I know what technology can serve but I am unaware of how Business would / should leverage it. Digital transformation is basically a bridge between IT and non IT roles. Business acumen + technical skills are the necessary inputs to achieve the same.

MBA would help me equip myself with business strategic skills, communication skills- business terminology, creditibilty, network, Global exposure. All these qualities are required along with technical expertise to give me a perspective It also open new opportunities for me in non digital space.

Additionally, this is my short term goal
Please feel free to ask more questions.

Thanks for posting all of this information with the GMAT Club community.

You have a fantastic GMAT score - congrats - and lots of accomplishments. A couple of key points:

(1) Being 33 and an Indian candidate might make things more difficult, especially for some of the schools on this list that tend to skew younger. There's nothing you can do about that to mitigate it other than put forward the best application possible. I just want you to be aware.

(2) Speaking of the list, I would narrow it down. That's an awful lot of schools and you are going to have to write really great essays to give yourself a shot at any and all of them. Those take time.

(3) I would not explore consulting in your essays if you are career goals are as you have stated. Your application should be focused on digital transformation out of the gates. That'll be much more effective.

Good luck! Please let us know if our team can be of any assistance to you:

Hello Pari123,

I appreciate your answer. I am into technology. I have helped few companies in their digital transformations and I have seen people without MBA leading digital transformation successfully. You are from tech background and you are already playing tech-functional role. That's why I asked how MBA will help you gain success in this role which you cannot gain without MBA!

Did you think about programs of these schools HARVARD, STANFORD, WHARTON, INSEAD, LBS , COLUMBIA, KELLOGGS, MIT SLOAN, NYU STERN, CHICAGO BOOTH? Each of the above schools has many good programs. Which programs you are going to target?

I want to apply for 2 years MBA. I know people suggest me 1 year course and all ( due to higher work ex)... but I am not looking for any time-saving course. It's 27 Dec, I am short on time and is seriously seeking help to choose between Chicago booth & Columbia, Harvard & Stanford.

In the name of free profile evaluation, consultants have made me waste a lot of time on calls that only talk about the packages they offer and all.

I will appreciate if you can guide me .. where do I have higher chances of securing an admit ( Chicago booth & Columbia, Harvard & Stanford ) ?

Many thanks in anticipation.

I'd agree with people who suggested a one year MBA program to you.
I understand you wish to do a two year MBA. However, in my humble opinion, one thing that may be overlooked is that b-school applications are about a mutual fit between the b-school and applicants. While applicants wish to get into an MBA program, that program should also feel that it can help the applicant achieve their professional objective. American MBA programs tend to attract applicants with lesser age and work experience than yours. Maybe add a few 1 year MBAs (Sloan fellowship) to your list, and also apply to some European MBA programs that are more age agnostic. IMD could be one.

That said, I will answer your question directly. Among the four programs you have mentioned, I would rank them in the following order for you- Booth, Columbia, HBS, Stanford

You should be fairly competitive for MIT Sloan. Your extracurricular involvement and work experience are particularly wolid. Because you are coming from a competitive demographic, you will need to craft an interesting narrative. What is your brand? What do you view as your strengths from a professional and personal perspective? The MIT Sloan application is an interesting one with its cover letter and video. You have to strike the right balance between the two perspectives to succeed in this process.

Please reach out for a free consultation if you'd like to discuss. We have MIT Sloan experts who can help you navigate through the application.

Hi inosahgem,

Thank you for sharing your profile. On the surface, your work experience appears to be good. However, I'd like to learn more about it, such as the roles and responsibilities you've taken on, your professional growth, and so on. MIT values collaborative leaders, enthusiastic personalities, and those dedicated to professional development. You'll need to include all of this in your apps. Your ECs are amazing. You've done/are doing many interesting things, and talking about them with the right enthusiasm will help you bring diversity to your apps. MIT is a good choice for PM, and you must explain why MIT and how it will help you reach your goals. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

You should be given a decent look at the MIT Sloan AdCom. You have many good qualities to your profile, especially your work experience and extracurricular leadership.

The key for you (especially with a waived exam) and coming from a competitive demographic, is to present a clear and differentiated narrative. How will you market yourself in the cover letter and video? How will you take all this good information and present it in a stand out kind of way? That's going to be the difference between getting an interview/acceptance and a rejection.

Hi Naruto11235,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with your work experience, working in MNC should imply some huge projects of yours. As a result, this should convey good leadership experiences. You have some good elements in your profile, such as the mobile app you designed and others. All of this will assist you in demonstrating your potential. Because you have had your GMAT waived, your application will be crucial. MIT values innovation, integrity, and collaboration. You'll need to connect the dots perfectly and create a narrative that can talk impact loud and clear. If you’d like, we are happy to get on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and guide you further. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!
