1. should I cancel my GMAT scores in the next 72 hours (noting that my IR was 5)

A: An IR score of 5 is fine. If you believe you can duplicate (or improve) a 710 with a higher IR score, then cancel and retake. You can also hold the score and retake. Sloan will consider your highest score.

2. anything that stands out, and what can I possibly do in the meantime to boost my profile)

A: If you are applying this year (and targeting R1) there really isn't much you can do. There's simply not enough time. The GMAT is really the major area of improvement that can be quickly fixed.

3. Grades - not sure if that would be a little bit of a disadvantage as a Southeast Asian male consultant.

A: Similarly, you can't change this component. The GMAT is one such way to counterbalance a low GPA. You can also write an optional essay to rationalize your GPA but it must contain legitimate reasons so it's doesn't look like an excuse.

So, based on all of this, it sounds like you should probably retake the exam. If you can add 20+ points that will help.

You should be an interesting candidate for Sloan, especially if you can pull off such a high GMAT score.

Community/extracurricular is definitely a weakness, but the Sloan application may not be a huge disadvantage to you as it's a short cover letter and a 1-minute video. If you can pinpoint a couple of interests (personal or professional) you should be able to put forward an interesting application.

I'm not entirely sure about your career goals and how an MBA/being an investment banker would necessarily make a ton of sense. I get that you would have the law and business side, but I would imagine the argument against you could be, why not just pursue that now? Why go through a two-year degree and two years as an investment banking associate? Is that truly necessary? It might be, but I just wanted to pressure test the argument.

In any event, please reach out to us for a free consultation if you would like to discuss further and might be interested in admissions consulting services.

You have a very interesting profile. Thanks for sharing.

Overall, strengths include academic performance, military tenure, and financial services experience. Weaknesses are mainly GMAT score (it's good, but not quite 700...) and extracurricular to a lesser extent (also good, but not outstanding.)

You should definitely apply to MIT Sloan but I would view your chances as a toss-up. If you could add 10+ points to your GMAT, I think your chances could significantly increase. Is that a possibility given where we are in the application cycle?

If you think it would be helpful to chat with someone on our team, please reach out for a free consultation using this link: https://admissionado.com/free-consultation/

Hello Admissionado,

If Sloan is allowing GMAT waiver then do you think there is a difference between GMAT Score-690 and GMAT Score-700?

The waiver really doesn't impact how the scores are evaluated. Even if 690 and 700 are quantitatively very similar, there's still this stigma that 690 is below a 700.

One could actually argue the GMAT waiver pushes the average score higher as those students doing real (or really well) on the exam would be more likely to submit than those that did not.

I realize that still keeps you in a "gray" spot, but that's generally how a 690 is viewed.

I quite agree with the previous poster, in that you should DEFINITELY apply to Sloan (as well as to many top schools). With the kind of experiences you have , your life stories can be quite compelling (MAKE SURE THEY ARE). I would also use opportunities to explain your Verbal score should not be seen as low as the GMAT score shows.

As for asking for a score waiver, 690 is not so low as to be hidden (usually meaning the scores are much lower), nor so high to put you in a competitive spot.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ping for 1:1 discussion for a detailed profile discussion, and to answer any of your questions.

Hi,
Could someone please help with my profile evaluation?

Age: 26
Gender: Male
Nationality: Indian

Qualification and Scores:
Ranked among top 3 in Secondary and Higher Secondary School
B.Tech Chemical Engineering from IIT - 9.42 GPA (Top 3 Percentile)
GMAT - 750 (Q51 V40 IR7)
Research Scholarship during undergrad and Rural Merit Scholarship for pursuing Undergrad

Work Experience :
51 months work ex in Business Development at IndianOil

My tasks till now

Involved working from the market entry of a cleaner fuel alternative to its retailing. This involved holding multiple direct discussions with various stakeholders ranging from various ministries to municipal commissioners to regulatory authorities as well as financial institutions. As a subject matter expert, I am currently a part of managerial level discussions that involve the Chairman as well as the Petroleum Minister in future roadmap creation activity for a Government initiative. Currently, I also lead the team which is working towards revamping the data management portal for 3 Oil Manufacturing Companies (OMCs): the team involves 30 odd officers combined from all OMCs.

Also in collaboration with MOPNG, I had headed the publicity plan for a pan India Govt initiative aimed at strategically targeting tier 1 and tier 2 cities for increasing market penetration of the alternative clean fuel.

Major initiatives: Designed the temporary database responsible for MIS creation for Ministry from scratch, which has lead to the idea of the current in-progress portal.
Designed a complete training module for the induction of officers in the newly formed department.
Managed a team of 8 officers in past.
Reached milestone of 10000 tons of product sold across India.

Promoted twice

Extra-Curricular:

I have worked on multiple CSR initiatives focussing on solving major problems like river pollution near pilgrimage sites, sanitary pad machine setup for access to women at affordable prices as well as biogas plant installation in parts of North India for provision of free food in community kitchens to 2000 villagers.
Have been a part of the Company's Business Development Cricket squad
At present, I am also preparing for Trinity College Grade 1 Piano Exam
During College I have been a coordinator for various events as well as winner in multiple case study events.

International Exposure: Full funded 3-month Research Internship at one of Germany's top universities.

Post-MBA goals: Work in a Management Consulting firm focussing on providing clean energy solutions to large enterprises.

My target colleges are M7 along with Insead. Please advise accordingly.

Thanks in advance

You have very impressive statistics and an overall profile. Sloan and Kellogg (within M7) and INSEAD feels like really good fits. The other M7 schools are going to be skewed towards finance (so your consulting goals are less applicable) or are going to be very competitive.

You should apply to a few of them and then consider programs outside of M7 if you are dedicated to getting an MBA. I might add Duke (Fuqua), Michigan (Ross), and Berkeley (Haas) if of interest.

Please reach out if you are interested in discussing further.

We see you have posted in several school threads, so we'll respond to one here:

For feedback, you have a strong pedigree (GPA, GMAT, etc.), but you are too young of a candidate right now. Internship experience really does not matter for full-time MBAs. It's all about full-time work experience. Also, your extracurricular achievements are thin.

Therefore, if you want to attend some of these top programs (Sloan, Wharton, Stanford, etc.) you should work at least another 2 years and focus on demonstrating your leadership capabilities through activities and initiatives at work and outside. That will round out what looks like it could be a nice profile.

Let us know if we can help. We actually have mentorship packages for those who are looking for profile development support in advance of applying to top schools.

Hi rahul2006,

Thank you for sharing your profile!

Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with the stats, congrats on backing a fantastic 750 score. Additionally, your GPA appears to be good.! So, this part is pretty sorted. Your research scholarship should undoubtedly be the main focus of your application.

About your work experience, your association with the clean fuel initiative is the USP of your resume, as having 4+ years of experience emphasizes your stellar leadership skills and significant accomplishment. Moreover, it makes your profile more diverse, having experience in various domains, managing officers, and working under the supervision of the Petroleum minister displays key qualities that AdComs look for in candidates. You will need to highlight your roles and responsibilities, the impact you brought, and your career progression. Especially the publicity plan that you have headed. It would be crucial for you to demonstrate significant learning, skill set development, and leading opportunities and must specifically mention instances where you worked above and beyond your role, including global exposure.

Your ECs could be an asset to you. Your involvement in social activities like tackling river pollution to setting up sanitary pad dispensing units, and building biogas plants for free meals demonstrates your personality of giving back to society, and this is what AdComs mostly look for. It is important how you demonstrate them to the AdComs. For instance, I suggest you go through our article on Significance of ECAs for MBA Application, to understand the importance of drafting exemplary ECAs essays!

Considering your post-MBA goals, MIT and Kellogg would be ideal choices, however, you would need to elaborate on your short and long term goals and how the school will help you achieve them. Apart from M7, you can also add Fuqua and Haas, as your goals are related to clean energy. We have helped many applicants from O&G and Energy backgrounds to get into INSEAD, you can read one of the success stories here, to have a better understanding! I want to emphasize that AdComs aren't all for scores. Instead, they assess a candidate's complete profile, which includes a variety of traits, ideals, and skills.

Overall, you have a robust profile and a good chance of getting into INSEAD & M7 schools. I know it’s highly competitive, but then again, a profile like yours, if properly worked upon, stands a high chance of acceptance. Hence, if you’d like, we’d be happy to get on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the business schools. We’ll be pleased to help you and make your profile stand out more. Feel free to schedule a call with us here for in-depth profile evaluation & get additional benefits.

Let's discuss with Alums to set up your R2 MBA applications

Cheers!

Hi!!
Could you help me with my profile?
Working experience 7 years, 31 female, Asian.
Graduate school in U.S. with GPA 3.9+ and top undergraduate in China with GPA 3.3, majoring in math.
Among the 7 years, I woked as a statistician/data scientist: 1 year in a research organization, 2 years in the marketing industry, 3 years in the Fintech industry, and over a year of Fintech start-up experience, currently work as a Sr. Manager in data science.

I'm struggling with the choice between MBA and the Sloan fellow program.
Thank you for your help!!
