Hi everyone,

I am taking the GMAT 2nd time after 11 days. I managed only a 420 thr first time ,i fell short of time in both section towards the end and I had to guess even after scoring a 560s in the mock.
Still after 3 months of preparation ,im stuck at 560s in the mock.
I am not able to improve my verbal score . I fail to apply concepts of Sc and Cr inspite of repeatedly learning them.

I have given the Kaplan ,Veristas ,Manhatten and Princton mocks so far with the respective scores, 530,560,500 ,530 .
Quant in all the mocks i have been scoring 35-40 but verbal I haven't been able to par the 30 scale yet. My ultimate goal is to reach atleast anything from 600 to 700.
Kindly help please.

While you should be focusing on official materials, your scores in these mocks indicate that you need significant work in verbal. It will not be possible to drastically improve verbals scores in a matter of days or weeks. You need more than a month. If you can postpone the test, consider doing so.

For verbal, you must know the grammar rules that are tested and be able to recognize them on the test. It is best to start with the basics. There are many grammar books available in the market. Pick one of them and practice over a long time period. For CR, the official guide lists the various question types. Practice on official materials. Many of them are available on this site.

There are no shortcuts here. You will need to put in quite a bit of work. GL!

You should be able to reach 600-700 by smashing quant while only doing average in verbal

Hi Amrit,

Q35-40 is on average 35 percentile, whereas V30 is 60 percentile, so the way I see is you have to improve a lot in quants.

Can you help me with the following ?

1. How have you Prepared for gmat (Self Prep or Online subscription) ?

2. Materials you have used ?

3. Are you currently working or on sabbatical?

3 important things for the score.
1. Accuracy
2. Time management
3. Strategy

1. Work on accuracy (concepts).
You should be able to solve correctly any question in OG without time constraint. If YES, then your concepts are thorough, If NOT you should be dedicating more time to concepts
This you can take help from experts or your guide

2. Once the accuracy is fine. Timing is very important.
Start doing timed practice. Preferably same format as GMAT. Select any 31 Quant questions (16 PS & 15 DS) and try to solve in 62 min and same for Verbal (36 Questions, 12 each of SC/CR/RC) in 65 minutes.

3. Strategy
Its important to start with the right section first. If you need time to settle in the exam and attention is not an issue, then start with IR/AWA and then Q/V or V/Q
If your attention decreases as exam progress, then you need to start with Q/V or V/Q and then IR/AWA.

You have to try doing initial 10 questions and last 5 questions correct (Even at the cost of guessing few questions in between), this gives the best outcome in terms of score.
If timing in verbal is a major issue, try to leave a RC preferably 3rd RC or RC between 20s & 30s question number, you will see a lot of time getting saved.

For mocks, try giving Official mocks GMAT Prep 1 & 2, and if you can afford, buy exam pack 3 & 4. These mocks give you a very close estimate of your expected score.

Since you have few days left for the exam, try to see how you can improve on accuracy & timing, strategy you can definitely workout
