I took the GMAT and got a 710 under some extenuating circumstances (I had a viral infection). 80% of the admits in my target schools have their scores in the 690-750 range. However, my demographic group has an average GMAT score of 740.
Should I use the optional "additional information" section to explain my extenuating circumstances? I have all the test results/medical records needed to provide evidence.
Will it be viewed as if I'm making excuses? That's the last thing I want to come across as. Please advice. Thanks.

Hi, Congratulations on getting a 710! . First of, it's an outstanding score. the fact that you had a viral fever on the test day and still could score 710 is astounding. I think you fare pretty well as your score in somewhere in between the range. don't worry about average demographic scores, GMAT is just 1 aspect out of several.
If you're asking about how to respond in your optional essays, it might be something like
"I understand my GMAT score is below the average demographic; However, I had viral fever the day prior to sitting the test. This was the only time I could sit the test this year owing to personal circumstances. I am happy to to accept an offer that is conditional upon me achieving a higher GMAT."
I've read somewhere else that people have been given conditional offers to b school but you must improve the score, and I'm confident you will. Goodluck

You can try the WAMC to get a better idea.
I know Souvik was applying with a 710 and a 760 and that made a difference. Zero admits vs Bunch of admits so if you are from a competitive pool.
I think it is of no use to explain your situation by the way. You can retake or apply with the current score but the explanation won’t be considered.
