OA :

EXPLAIN the correct answer as well as why other options are wrong..

I think "amount of" can't be used with "accidents" (Not sure) -> A&B gone
" The number of" should be used with singular verb -> C gone
D compares "the number" with "accidents" ->illogical -> D gone

E wins

The amount of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like accidents caused by faulty wiring, has increased significantly since regulations on manufacturing have been relaxed.

QUESTION: Why is "have been" relaxed incorrect? The regulations are still relaxed, but why is "have been" incorrect? Why do we have to use "were"?

Thanks.

The amount of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like accidents caused by faulty wiring, has increased significantly since regulations on manufacturing have been relaxed.

A)The amount of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like accidents caused by faulty wiring, has increased significantly since regulations on manufacturing have been relaxed. - 'amount'is incorrect in this context because accidents can be counted. Hence 'number' should be used. Also, 'amount of car accidents' is incorrectly compared with 'accidents'

B)The amount of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like those caused by faulty wiring, have increased significantly since regulations on manufacturing were relaxed. - 'amount'is incorrect in this context because accidents can be counted. Also, 'amount of car accidents' is incorrectly compared with 'accidents'. The 'amount' is singular' and so 'have' is incorrect here.

C)The number of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like the number caused by faulty wiring, have increased significantly since regulations on manufacturing were relaxed. - 'The number of' is singular and so 'have' is incorrect here.

D)The number of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like accidents caused by faulty wiring, has increased significantly since regulations on manufacturing had been relaxed. - 'The number of car accidents' is incorrectly compared with 'accidents'. 'had been relaxed' is incorrect

E)The number of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like the number caused by faulty wiring, has increased significantly since regulations on manufacturing were relaxed. - 'The number of' is singular and 'has' is singular. 'The number of car accidents' is compared with 'the number'

Were is correct because the regulations are relaxed only on a particular date say on 1.1.2010 but the effects are experienced for some time span in future.....

So we will say that ""since regulations on manufacturing were relaxed""...

First of all, the subject has to be - the number of car accidents and not -the amount of car accidents-. A and B are out.

In C, the verb - have increased - is wrong since - the number - is singular.

In D -the number of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like accidents - faulty comparison.

E is the right choice for using correct comparison of the number with the number, the right main verb -has increased -and using the simple past -were relaxed - rather than the wrong -had been relaxed - , because there is no justification for using a past perfect in the absence of a simple past in the sentence.

car accidenets = countable - so number of should be used instead of amount of : A, B out
The number of car accidents is singular , so "has" should be used: C Out
we are comparing number vs number, not number vs accidents: D Out

hi,
use of like is appropriate here...
such as gives the exampes whereas like means similar to...
here like is meant to be used in place of similar to....
when you plug similar to or examples in place of like ,you will realize similar is the correct usage...

I am not an expert, but this is how I solved it.

1. Amount can not be used with "number" of car accidents so A and B are out.

2. With "the number", singular verb should be used , C is out

3."the number of the car accidents" should be compared with "number of something(accidents)", not by accidents. Choice D is out

We are left with choice E.

E is the only viable answer here. AR15J's explanation above is all correct.

I'd add that the use of the present perfect ("have been") in A and the past perfect ("had been") in A and D is wrong, as well. The simple past ("were") is what we want. The present perfect is used to describe events that are still current, and while the regulations may still be relaxed, it's not appropriate to use this form to describe a cause that precedes the action of the sentence. The past perfect fails because we don't have a past event for this action to precede, and that's the only case in which we can use the past perfect.

To the writer, I'd suggest that to make this more GMAT-like, you should throw in a bit more variety. SC questions very rarely test a few clear and absolute rules without any additional changes or complications. Also, while the comparison in E is technically correct, it's too awkward and unnecessarily drawn-out to make it past an editor's pen. The sentence is really just written that way to test a comparison, when a real sentence would probably just say "The number of car accidents caused by faulty brakes or wiring . . . "

hotshot02, you may be right. We can certainly have an implied modifier, and in this case, I read "the number" to mean "the number of accidents." The sentence is long and clunky enough as it is without adding one more piece! However, without the modifier, it really does look like "the number" is what is caused by faulty wiring. I'm guessing the GMAT wouldn't allow this usage. They will certainly use a general pronoun ("Accidents caused by X, like those caused by X . . ."), but in a case like that, there's a clear and sensible meaning.

In any case, E is the best we've got, but as I've said, I don't think this sentence would fly on the GMAT. That's why it's really best to study SC from official questions.

Hello mikemcgarry,
Need your HELP again...

A and B out (amount of)
C is out (Has increased not Have)

But between D and E, I know that HAD is wrong, but is WERE correct?
and in D is this a correct comparison "The number of car accidents...., like accidents caused....." (As an instructor from Manhattan Considered is Wrong!)
in E is this comparison correct "The number of car accidents caused...., like the number caused....." To me, the number isn't caused rather accidents are caused. Or is there any omitting words?

Please explain.
Respect....

Hi Nahid!

Carolyn from Magoosh here -- I can jump in for Mike :-)

In choice E) the "were" is correct: since regulations on manufacturing were relaxed.

And with E), we just have a case of words omitted :-) The full version would be:

The number of car accidents caused by faulty brakes, like the number of car accidents caused by faulty wiring

So we are correctly comparing "number of car accidents caused by X" to "number of car accidents caused by Y". Since "of car accidents" would be repeated, it's fine to omit it :-)

Hope that helps! :-)

Is the usage "have been" correct in E? I am confused with this usage and no one has commented on this.
