I'm no expert. But, here the use of "when" seems incorrect from GMAT view. Anyways, as it is not underlined let's move to see the other choices. A. they might have been expected for their diaries to focus on tribal politics.
B. they might have been expected to focus on tribal politics.
C. they might have been expected that it should focus on tribal politics.
D. its focus might have been expected to be on tribal politics.
E. there might have been an expectation that it would focus on tribal politics.
A. Logically, the line is saying that the focus of the diary should be on tribal politics. I guess it should be about diarist not diary.
B. Correct.
C. it is singular, whereas diarists are plural.
D. Same as C
E. Same as C.
