Your analysis is correct; however, relying your choice on an idiom is also correct but in my opinion is not sufficient.

During the exam too many variables come into thepicture and you can be confused. Instead your logic never fails (or could).

Instead of is used to replace one thing with another but here we can replace nothing, at all. The professor says an opinion or a point of view. Moreover, several factors can be taked in account: instead of like is ackward, too instead of being or as opposed too. Besides this, the meaning tends to choice B.

So B is correct. This is the arsenal that you must have to crack a question.
