Yeah there is no SV error. Its the usage of infinitive + verb - this shows intention
Ex: I started early from home to reach office on time. ( to reach)

Regarding A The growth projected for these storms in different computerized weather models varies widely.

I always have doubts regarding use of these prepositional phrases...

The growth projected for these storms [modifies projected OK] in different computerized weather [ doesnt it seems that storms are in different computerized weather...]

My question is when is it ok for prepositional phrase to be far and when it has to touch the things it modifies..??

Indeed there is no SV agreement error in option B. Option B is incorrect only because it changes the meaning of the original sentence as it means " The growth was projected intentionally so that it varies widely" and hence is incorrect. The usage of infinitive "to + vary" is incorrect.

The growth projected for these storms in different computerized weather models varies widely.
A. projected for these storms in different computerized weather models varies widely
- Correct
B. for these storms is projected in different computerized models of weather to vary widely
-Growth is projected using different models....Ok. But the purpose of using different model is not to SHOW VARIATION. Hence Incorrect
C. of these storms, projected in different computerized weather models, vary widely
Singular verb VARIES should be used for singular noun GROWTH. Hence Incorrect
D. projected for these storms, which vary widely in different computerized weather models
The sentence is incorrect since it is just a CLAUSE.
E. that varies widely for these storms are projected in different computerized weather models
Singular verb IS should be used for singular noun GROWTH. Hence Incorrect

I see a lot of confusion around the subject verb agreement in answer option B and C.
I believe "Growth" is neither singular nor plural. It takes the singularity/plurality from the subject it is attached with.
For e.g.
Plural: A steady growth in the popularity of two smaller parties may upset the polls.
Singular: Its rapid growth is already exposing cracks in the supply chain.
The subject verb agreement isn't an issue here in either B or C.

Quote:
(B) for these storms is projected in different computerized models of weather to vary widely
the intent shown by "to vary" makes this sentence incorrect.
The growth isn't projected for the weather to vary widely.
This changes the meaning of the sentence.

Quote:
(C) of these storms, projected in different computerized weather models, vary widely
Here the modifier "very widely" modifies models.
This also changes the meaning of the sentence, models don't very widely, projected growth does.

(C) of these storms, projected in different computerized weather models, vary widely
(D) projected for these storms, which vary widely in different computerized weather models
(E) that varies widely for these storms are projected in different computerized weather models

it takes me a long time to see why choice b is wrong.
what is the difference between "do"and " to do". "do" is an action/state existing now and "to do" is a future action.
so, in choice A , "varies" means the state of varying exists at present. varying is already a fact .

in choice B, "to vary"means, the action of varying dose not happen now but it is a future action.

clearly, the meaning in choice A is good.

if we focus on the difference between "do" and "to do", we could find the correct answer. for a native, he can choose the correct one without thinking about the difference. for non native, we have to analyse harder to go to the correct choice .

https://www.nytimes.com/1995/09/18/world/scientists-say-earth-s-warming-could-set-off-wide-disruptions.html

Computerized models indicated that if atmospheric carbon dioxide levels double, "one-third of all the forest area of the earth will change," said Dr. Steven P. Hamburg, a forest ecologist at Brown University who is a member of the intergovernmental panel. "But we still don't have a good grasp of what it will look like," he added. Carbon dioxide concentrations are expected to double late in the next century if no further action is taken to limit emissions.

The global impact of climate change on agriculture is likely to be "small to moderate" if measures are taken, the panel says. But regional effects are expected to vary widely.

this is hard.
we can focus on the difference between "do" a definite verb, which contain time of happenning and "to do" which is non definite.
in choice A, "varied" happens, not a future action. "to vary" in choice B is a future action. choice A say that the growth varied at present, a condition which exists now. choice B say that the growth is likely to vary in the future.

this focus help us to differentiate the two in the test room when we are tired.

moreover, projected in choice A mean "estimated". growth estimated in different model varies widely
projected in choice B mean focasted. growth is forcasted to vary. this is different meaning.

this is hard.
look at choice A and B. in A, "in different model" modifies " growth but in choice B, "in different model " modifies "projected" and, so, is wrong. it is hard to realize this point.

Hi
As daagh has pointed out, I think you are missing the bigger picture here.
Choice B in simple words - The growth is projected to vary.
Choice A in simple words - The growth projected varies widely.

Notice the difference between the intended meaning?
According to B - the growth is projected with an intention to vary. Does this make sense? No, it does not.
According to A - the growth simply varies. It is just stating a fact about the growth.

Usage of TO + VERB -
To + verb gives a sense of intention.

Example 1- I want to acquire the rights to that song. Correct.
It shows intent. My intent to acquire the rights.

Example 2 - The chair is so short as to acquire the perfect balance.
Makes no sense. The chair has no intention of its own to acquire perfect balance.

Hope it helps! :)

'Varies' is singular. Generally speaking, when you add an 's' to a verb, it will be third person singular. When you add an 's' to a noun only, it turns plural. You must change your mis-notion immediately.

The original sentence is correct A is the answer.

Let us analyze other options.

B Grammatically this sentence is okay, if not concise. The use "to" is not the best usage here. This sentence is wordy. Also meaning is off. Per this choice it means that the growth was projected in computerized models to vary widely intentionally, but it not our meaning.

C Subject verb relation is not proper. Growth is singular but we have a plural noun vary

D Usage of which is wrong here. It refers to the storms not the growth. This sentence is a fragment missing verb.

E Subject verb relation is not good here. singular verb will come. There is huge meaning calamity in sentence. This sentence suggests that the growth of the storms varies widely in reality, but what was projected in computer model and for what ?
