The installation of electronic, high-speed scanning devices at the entrances and exits of toll roads will obviate the need for toll booths. Automobiles will have scanner sensitive license plates- like the bar codes on consumer packaged products- so that the scanner devices will record the license number of cars entering and exiting the toll road. Car owners will be billed monthly by the highway authorities.
Discuss how logically persuasive you find the above argument. In presenting your point of view, analyze the sort of reasoning used and supporting evidence. In addition, state what further evidence, if any, would make the argument more sound and convincing or would make you better able to evaluate its conclusion
The argument claims that after the installation of scanning devices at the entrance and exits of toll roads, there will be no need of toll booths. Stated in this way, argument fails to mention supporting evidences on the basis of which argument can be judged and evaluated. The argument relies on various assumptions which are unwarranted and doubtful. Therefore, the argument is rather weak, unconvincing and has several flaws.
First, the argument assumes that installation of scanning devices and scanner sensitive scanner plates can be easily done. But what if the whole installation procedure is so costly that it is not monetary viable for the operators ? Also, there is cost involved in installation of scanner sensitive devices and most of the car drivers will not be willing to make this investment. Even if operators make such investments but what if car drivers do not install these scanners ? Whole investment would be wasted.
Second, the argument did not consider that for smooth functioning of scanners there is requirement of toll booths. Also, there can be instances when these scanners would not work due to any reason such as power failure , glitches etc., then in such type of situation cars will not be able to pass the toll booths. This would lead to loss of time and inconvenience among car drivers.
Finally, argument claims that payment will be billed monthly, The argument did not consider the possibility of drivers not making payments at time. The main purpose of making a toll is to collect revenue and if thus happens there would be considerable loss of revenue for the government and operators.
The argument could be strengthened if it mentioned the cost of installation of scanners, method of operating of scanners and strategy to be followed for promoting car drivers to install the scanners . Without these essential key details, argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.
