The leader of the physics seminar was prepared to start discussions herself, for not everyone in attendance was knowledgeable that the material being discussed involved new theories of quantum mechanics unknown to many in the profession

(A) for not everyone in attendance was knowledgeable
(B) for everyone in attendance did not know
(C) with everyone in attendance not knowing
(D) with everyone attending not knowledgeable
(E) for not everyone attending knew

Can any one clearly explain the correct and incorrect choices??

Since the context is in past we need past tense . Between B and E , E hold the intended meaning as not everyone (some) is not same as 'everyone not'. Therefore correct answer is E.
