My answer is (C). It took me 01:11.
In the first IC (Independent Clause) before the comma, its subject (“the numerous illnesses and injuries”) is plural. Eliminate
(BDE) because they incorrectly use "has" / "is", which is not in agreement with the subject.
In the second IC, which uses inversion, its subject ("the effect") is singular. Eliminate (A) for its use of "are" in the second IC.
(C) prevails.
