(A) a family where one parent only

(C) that for families in which only one parent

(D) a family in which only one parent

(E) those of families in which one parent only
The survey showed that children are much more psychologically stable when raised in..... Than in...

Family needs to be compared. Eliminate B, C, E. Only one parent and one parent only are different in meaning. Usually only is placed before what it restricts.
Eg: I have only one blue pen
( I can have other color pen but I only have one blue varient)

I only have one blue pen.
( you don't have anything else. You only have one blue pen)

In the question, we need only one parent and not one parent only.

Answer seems D.

Meaning
a family with two parents will raise a more psychologically stable child than a family with one parent
Error
Where is used wrongly to refer to 'family'.
what is being tested is Parallel comparison
only option D IMO corrects this error.

Only A and D maintain parallelism.

"where" in A is wrong imo.

Answer: D

....in a family with X than in a family with Y
So cancel B,C & E
Between A & D ....in A ,intended meaning is also changed by using 'and' before 'cares'
Ans D

(C) that for families in which only one parent

(D) a family in which only one parent

(E) those of families in which one parent only

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

The first thing you want to look at in this sentence is parallel structure. Because you say in the beginning ‘raised in a family’, you have to maintain the singular form of family. That eliminates choices C and E as possible answers. Also, the parallel structure carries over to prepositions. In the beginning, it says ‘raised in a family of x than in a family of y’. You have to maintain that structure of ‘in a family’. That leaves you with two possible choices: A and D. A uses the word ‘where’, which is incorrect. ‘Where’ refers to locations. The placement of ‘only’ in A and E is incorrect. It implies that the only thing this parent does is to care for a child. Choice D is the correct answer
