Many a time you would notice that in reading comprehension the author uses the word Some. The passage frames the sentence in ways such as “some theorists suggest that….” “some believe that…” “some scientists contend that…” “some feel…” The author uses the opinion of these “some” to stress on a belief prevalent in general community which he himself doesn’t adhere to. You would mostly observe that the author ends up disagreeing with these “some”. Rarely he would agree with the “some” because the ones that he agrees with, he would want to mention their specific names or positions. Eg ‘the historians agree with the scholars on this point.’ For agreement the author is specific about the names of the entities he is agreeing with unlike the case of “some”. This is called anticipatory reading. If you know a few writing structures and styles, you can anticipate as you come across some words. For example you know that when you see a “however”, the author will take a u turn with his point made previously. So, observe the “some” in your passages and see how it can improve your comprehension capability.
