Is the question correct?

It's a Poorly worded question. The language is not appropriate however the meaning of question can be understood with explanation.

As depicted in the figure attached, consider the painted layers as cubed to cover the black cube originally given.

We need to count how many layered cubes we need to cover the faces of all existing cubes.

There are 64 big cube-shaped bricks painted with yellow. How many small bricks are required to cover the entire outer surface of the big cube so that the yellow paint does not show at all?

A. 32
B. 64
C. 96
D. 180
E. 216

64 = 4^3
I.e. currently we have a big cube of dimensions 4*4*4

In order to cover this cube from all directions, we need to place 2 layers in all directions time. 1 layer of new cubes on each face of 6 faces of existing cube.

The existing cube has 16 smaller faces on each face of big cube. So in order to cover the yellow painted cubes, we need 16 new cubes on each face

New cubes added = 16*6 = 96

Answer option C

Hi,

Where in the question does it say that the area of the cube is 64 ? Doesn't it say there are 64 cubes that are painted yellow ?
Also, in your solution, you've mentioned that we need to place 2 layers of smaller cubes in all the directions. Could you please explain ?

Thanks in advance. :)

To answer your first highlighted question, The question has already mentioned that bigger cube is composition of small 64 cubes so it would be perfectly alright to assume that the smaller cubes have dimensions and volume 1 unit each because finally we have to answer only the additional no. of cubes and not about the exact value of area or volumes.
