It has kind of gotten long enough so I think I will organize it a bit in a sequence other than chronologically. I think the big question now is who does not have STEM?

I have gone through the list of schools and found that out of the Top 30, only 4 programs lacked official STEM designation:
Carlson (Minnesota)
Goizueta (Emory)
Scheller (Georgia)
Warrington (Florida)

All other programs had either designated their entire MBA programs as STEM-certified or had tracks that were STEM (which is frankly just as good and only is a difference of a few classes).

Anyone can shed some light on job prospects if you choose STEM designated MBA?
During recruitment, you need to concentrate on roles which fall under STEM and apply for STEM OPT?
Say chosing Tech Product Management roles instead of other roles whose job duties don’t fall under STEM related roles.

Weird enough this is a 1-year program? Last time I checked, they only offered a masters degree in business analytics. Did they rename it as an MBA?

Most still apply for the traditional two-year program so this is somewhere different then having a specific concentration, this is actually a whole separate program. You would have to apply for the specific program. Mysterious, confusing 😬👍 but positive!

Well they have the same STEM concentration for 2 year MBA program too; but out of 20 concentrations, Emory just has 1 STEM track in Business Analytics for its 2 and 1 year program which is lesser compared to most other programs.

Top STEM MBA Programs

In big part for my own sake to keep track of all the MBA programs that have recently been STEM-designated and STEM-certified, I wanted to put together a master list with links to confirming the designation/requirements that students may have. Keep in mind that a number of programs (almost all) allows to take extra classes and get an extra MS degree to receive the STEM certification but often that requires an extra year and cost. In these cases, the MBA programs alone are sufficient to provide you with the STEM designation.

Why is STEM Important?

STEM designation is really only important to international applicants who are subject to work permit requirements and would need an H1B to stay in the United States after their OPT (Optional Practical Training) expires. STEM allows applicants to get a 3-year OPT instead of the 1-Year which in turn allows a much longer time-frame to find a job and provide applicants with 4 opportunities to get an H1B instead of just 2, so it doubles the chances and buys time in other words.

There is very nice. They have been working on stem certification for over a year now. However, I would like to see something in writing on their website that actually indicates the designation before adding their name to the list. I’ve had an unfortunate experience in the past of adding school to the list based on their announcement verbally yet for it not to materialize for quite a while and having to remove it….

At the same time, I’m hoping that once the craziness and Covid subside, some attention can be given to the immigration policies that should hopefully improve. That would make stem certifications less critical… and US MBA even more popular.

Effective May 31, 2022, Scheller MBA program is recognized as a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degree. International students graduating with an MBA degree after this date will be eligible to apply for a two-year Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension.
