Hi,

I gave my GMAT 6 months back and requested score report for ISB at the same time. But now when I'm applying to Round 1 , i noticed that the percentile of Quant and Verbal has changed. Which one should I enter in Application form?? The one which is latest or the one which i sent through GMAT ?

Pls Advice MBAkarma MiMEssay Nikhil strategy4gmat

Hey

Your academic performance is great. Work experience is fine, however post MBA goal needs a bit more analysis. For instance is MBA required to achieve this? Therefore while the profile is strong, the story needs to be thought through.

All the best!

Hello vagrawa

Your work experience will be strong (or weak) depending on how you choose to present it in your essays, LORs (and later interviews).
While your high GMAT score no doubt helps you stand out in some way (especially considering the computer science background), career progression and achievements at work will play an important role. Career goals looks organic and realistic too.
I understand that little can be done on the extracurricular front (if you don't have any), but on work front I am sure there are ample opportunities to present if you have worked in a large organization for 4.5 years and have consistently earned good appraisals and ratings.
Many candidates are not able to or articulate what value have they added because 1) they are not able to step back and look beyond the contributions made day to day 2) they focus on the technical aspects and not on the business aspects.
If you have received top ratings, these have been given for a reason and not in charity. Now you may feel that you were given these rating as you did your job as a good engineer. But what did it mean to your organization? Did it earn more revenue, save time, cut costs, help win customers etc.? Surely, it must have helped the company achieve a larger objective for which you were appreciated.
If you can talk about that impact, work experience will come out strongly and help you build a strong application.

Please help evaluate my profile for ISB :

Gmat Score: 760

UG College and Branch: One of the top NITs, Computer Science
10th: 93%
12th: 89%
UG : 7.39 CGPA

Workex : 4.5 years with one of the top semiconductor companies in the world.
Work Profile :Software development, mostly related to embedded systems.
Extra curriculars : Very few, nothing notable.
Initiatives at work : Nothing notable. Mostly focused on doing a lot of work.

Post MBA goal : Product management

I knew I have an other wise weak/average profile, so focused on getting a good GMAT score.
I don't really have much leadership related stuff at my work. I have slogged 4 years as a good engineer, received best appraisal ratings consistently for my work, but all that just corresponds to how good an engineer I am, so to portray my work as one suitable for an MBA aspirant is going to be challenging for me.
I haven't taken many initiatives as well at work, so that's also something I can't focus much upon.

So based on this, how good would be my changes to get an admit ?

Hello ssraj111

Starting off the GRE looks on the lower side, but might be possible to compensate due to the unique nature of your profile.
Though, looking at your academic background a high GRE will make things seem even more consistent.
Would you also like to talk about your extracurricular activities as that can add even more flavor.
Lastly, while career goals are organic, are they realistic and need an MBA is what you need to answer.

Thanks for replying. Can you please tell what do you mean by career goals being organic?

Also I'm open to leadership positions in edtech firms in short term. In Long term I want to head an educational institution or a mission driven edtech company. Don't want to leave the education industry.

Are there any more pathways if one wants to be in education and at the leadership position?

Hello ssraj111

Organic means you are in the right direction.
For instance (extreme example), if you say that you want to be an investment banker after this would not be organic.
Edtech and Educational institution (at least for now) are two very different areas.
Edtech after an MBA makes sense, but leading an Educational institution is mostly PhDs involved in academics.

Hi SHAAN1512,

Thanks for sharing your profile.
Given your work experience and your GMAT score, we will suggest to concentrate on IIML, IIMI, IIMU and IIMK apart from SP Jain. You can definitely apply in IIM A,B,C and ISB but your chances of converting will be on the lower side. Since you have already spent time on GMAT preparation, you can concentrate on the application preparation of above mentioned colleges. The quality of your application and interviews need to be above par to compensate for your lower GMAT score.

If you will work hard for your applications then you stand a good chance into converting for one of the IIMs definitely

Hope it helped

Hi tushar,

Good acads overall. If you feel 680 isn't your best shot, then consider re-taking it for ISB for better chances. Considering your profile, it's not a score that would compel one to suggest not to apply at all.
Your work-ex, especially what you would've done at Delhi Metro does give you an edge. For L&T, do highlight the workforce management challenges you overcome on a continuous basis. Within MIS, be sure to show your exposure to analytics.

The extra-curricular during college are good but are you continuing with that trait of going beyond the call of duty at workplace as well? A continuous focus on this section is important.

Couldn't get a sense of your goals, would be great if you could share.

In summary, aim for R1 if you don't intend to re-take GMAT. Otherwise R2. You can also consider applying to IIMAs PGPX with this score.

Happy to have a detailed chat if your want.

Cheers!

Thanks for your inputs sir
I cannot re-take GMAT as i already used my 2 online attempts.
Just to clarify, i was not working for Delhi Metro, L&T was doing one construction project for Delhi Metro and i was planning engineer in that project.
I am not doing much extra curricular in L&T but i can show analytics and varoius workforce management issues ( i developed a new organization Structure for one project which is now treated as standard for all projects in our unit)

Goals - my goal is consulting. For last 3 years, i have been troubleshooting various issues of our projects, coordinating with various inter-departmental teams to resolve complex issues arising in our projects. This has developed my interest in consulting and i want to develop on this skill

I am planning to apply for the EEO at ISB this year. I did my undergraduate in biomedical engineering from SSN with a CGPA at 7.81. I have been working for an analytics firm for the past year. I have organised several events in college and was also the president of one of the extra curricular clubs.

Got it. However, you should highlight the exposure to working with DMRC. Consulting is a logical transition and you can focus on joining the real estate/infra practice owing to your previous experience. In addition, aim to research about and mention the SREI Infra club in your application.

All the best!

Hi Tusharjoshi573,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

The good aspects of your profile are - 1) Good academics 2) NIT brand 3) A little diversity, coming from civil engineering background 4) Leadership roles in many college committees.

The score of 680 is not a great score, but its also not a bad score either. As you cant attempt GMAT anymore, concentrate on applications and interviews part. You will have to perform better than average candidates in these to convert ISB.

Moreover, your future aim of 'consulting' is too generic. 8 out of 10 candidate write the same thing. You need to be more specific.

Work hard on your application part and interview preparation. Apply in round 1 as rush is less. But start immediately, time is not on your side for R1.

Hope it helped
