Hi,

Answering your questions as below:
1. I see that you have shared your score - GRE: 321 (164Q, 157V). Though there is no section wise average or range declared by the school, it is safe to assume that it would still be benchmarked. I think a slight push to your quantitative score would position you more competitively. The overall score is definitely considered. It is safe to assume that being close to the school average GRE of 328 is a good target score.

2. For the ISB PGP application process till the previous admission cycle you were required to submit one letter of recommendation preferably professional. An academic LOR is not a requirement of the process.

Hey,

Would be obliged if I could get a profile evaluation.

Academic background:- 10th standard- 95.4% (ICSCE-2016), 12th standard- 96.5% (ISC-2018).

Graduation:- 3.5/4.0 CGPA- Bcom Hons(Accounting and finance) from NMIMS, Mumbai (2018-2021).
Activities in graduation:- Head of Marketing of college's Social Responsibility Forum; was in charge of the finances, and lead a group of 25 to execute events. 3 months internship with a brokerage post-graduation.

GMAT- 670(Verbal- 35, QA- 47) (This is my first attempt which I gave a few days back. I had given CAT and XAT and scored around 94 percentile in each, but decided not to go ahead with these scores for IIMs or XLRI).

Work ex:- Engaged in Family business(small scale manufacturing firm) since September 2021; planning to apply to ISB's flagship PGP program (through EEO), but through a work-ex in the family business.

Career goals:- I'm really keen to explore the rotational leadership programs/general management roles offered by some conglomerates in India, or explore consulting. I believe these roles can offer better exit opportunities and will be in line with my long-term career goal of joining back my business armed with a better network and industry knowledge.

Besides an overall evaluation, I had a doubt. Should I go ahead with the current Gmat score (as I believe my 10th/12th acad scores are in a good range), or should I try pushing it up?

Again, would be grateful if I could get an evaluation.
Thank you.

Try pushing it up to 700+. GMAT score is not the only criterion, but it is an important criterion.

Hello

While the past scores are good, the GMAT is below par to be entirely confident of this score. Recommend aiming for a higher score as anyway you have time for application.
Coming to the profile, past scores are decent and work ex show potential. Do you have any other extracurriculars (after university) worth talking about?
Also missing here is a mention on career goals which is extremely important for a profile evaluation and application.

Hi mkmkmkkkk , hope you are well

I would suggest that you work towards increasing your GMAT score because:

1. You are a young applicant (not constrained by time and age as is the case for older applicants) and, you should show motivation for doing better

2. You have experience only in family business. It could be a challenge to convincingly demonstrate your caliber if your references are from managers within the family business. You must hit the mark in all aspects of your profile be it GMAT, leadership narrative, community initiatives in order to come across as a deserving candidate for the EEO process.

Best wishes

Hey Varun. Thank you for pointing it out. I've edited my original post, and I'm mentioning it in this reply too.

Career goals:- I'm really keen to explore the rotational leadership programs/general management roles offered by some conglomerates in India, or explore consulting. I believe these roles can offer better exit opportunities and will be in line with my long-term career goal of joining back my business armed with a better network and industry knowledge.

Hi,
An overall evaluation: Family business is a great learning ground, emphasise on what you bring to the table. You have a strong academic background but a retake on the GMAT should definitely be on the cards.

Hi mkmkmkkkk,

Thanks for your post!

First, I would say you do have a decent overall CGPA, and past scores are also good, so that won’t be a problem for you. However, ISB is a top-notch B-school; hence, a stellar GMAT score is a prerequisite. I would say you at least aim for a 710+; this would increase your chances of admission and help boost your overall profile.

Coming to your profile, you haven’t mentioned much about your role & responsibilities in the family business; also, you need to add relevant examples where you stepped up as a leader, the impact generated & the role played in enlarging the business. Moreover, since you come from a family business background, getting into an MBA school with a family business background poses a few challenges but no need to worry! Here is an article you could refer to, how to stand out in your MBA application with a family business background, this would most certainly help provide insights about how to approach your MBA application with a family business background.

About ECAs, you do need to add some of them to be used in your essays and define a new narrative of yourself by characterizing yourself as of selfless nature, with great leadership abilities, good communications skills, and a sense of social well-being.

Overall, past scores are decent enough, and your work experience has potential. The only thing you must work on is connecting your experience with your post-MBA goals, as you would need to convince the adcom; why do you think your future goals make sense! You are a very young applicant and have achieved significant things in a short period; all you need is motivation, proper guidance, and build a stellar application for ISB. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with your profile building strategy, feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Let's create a Roadmap for R1 Sept 23 intake

Cheers!

Hi DesiMozart,

Thanks for your post!

Starting with the stats, you have a decent overall CGPA, so it won’t be a problem for you. Moreover, you have a ton of relevant work experience and would make a strong candidate for the MBA program. Furthermore, you described all your roles and responsibilities, professional accomplishments, and promotions well. So I believe your work experience is quite sorted!

About your ECAs, you do have some strong ECAs, which could be very well used in your essays to add additional points to your profile; just add a little more on the challenges faced, leadership role executed, and the impact generated, and a bit more about the overall experience.

Coming to your questions, though B-school declares no section-wise cutoff or range, still it’s better to score above average and don’t bomb any section. You do have a good score, and if you think you do have good reasons to go for a GMAT, I would say you aim for at least 720+. . Now, about LORs, the application process at ISB PGP requires you to submit at least one professional letter of recommendation preferably.

All in all, I would say that statistically speaking, your profile is extraordinary. You have a good chance of getting into the ISB PGP program. You just need to work on connecting dots and form a network interlinking your goals, experience, skill-set, and accolades in your B-School essays to mesmerize the adcom and build a stellar application for ISB. If you need any further help, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with your profile building strategy, feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Let's create a Roadmap for R1 Sept 23 intake

Hello DesiMozart hope you are well

Since you are on the lower end of the age spectrum for the ISB cohort (and are not constrained by time or experience), you should try and pull up your GRE score/ GMAT to the best of your capability to create a strong impression. You have a decent profile with regards to your work experience and you would certainly grab eyeballs with the plethora of projects in HR analytics and Banking automation. If you are able to demonstrate close collaboration with international stakeholders you would take your candidacy a notch up.
Your ECs seem to be dated and are mostly from your college days. It helps to substantiate recent outside work initiatives with proof such as certificates, however, try your best to present active involvement with the community in the last 2-3 years. An exceptional leadership narrative could really make all the difference in your candidacy.

About your goals, think what would you like to do in the long term and trace back the steps to present possible career paths post-MBA that would enrich your experience and grant you skills to succeed in the future. MBB goals have been used too often to be interesting, therefore, show that you have deliberated well on your aspirational and inspirational goals and chalk out a plan B in order to reach the same destination. An ideal way to approach long-term goals would be to think about - what kind of problems that you have seen through your experiences would you like to solve for? And, what do you really need to be able to make that impact?

If you wish to seek professional guidance do reach out.

Best wishes

Hello DesiMozart,

You have a strong overall profile and a set of goals that are in line with your experience. We would recommend that you work on improving your test scores and aim for a score in excess of 720. The same, coupled with a set of well-written essays are bound to give you a strong chance at making it into ISB!

The following video might prove to be helpful:

Each year, the approach toward writing the ISB essays broadly remains the same.

Good luck!

Thank you.

Hello mkmkmkkkk,

Thanks for sharing your profile details.

The profile and proposed career goals are in place and the entrepreneurial experience will definitely add value; however, you definitely need to work on improving your GMAT score upwards of 710. The good news is that we still have time. :-)

All the best!

Hi,

I am planning to appear for GMAT Exam this year if not next. if anyone would evaluate and suggest pointers regarding improving my profile and the score required to get a call for ISB, would be really helpful

Intermediate-96.2 percent
Btech-8/10 from NIT
Gate- 91 rank
MTECH- 8.8/10 from IIT.

Work Experience
Working as an assistant manger in a PSU Company for 3 years now.

Extra curriculars
Held different positions in the college fests and as well in the department

Was the captain of badminton team of the department and finsihed 2nd twice.

This an overview of my profile, would be really thankful if someone suggests anything to build it or tell me the required score in the GMAT to get a call and hopefully get an admit.

Hi saisandeep1997 , hope you are well

Given you are from a PSU, I believe an early application would work better in your case unless you can show immense career progression at the PSU by waiting for another 1-2 years (which is usually a tough thing to do at PSUs). The longer your experience is the stronger your leadership narrative should be. If targeting the IIMs and you don't meet the age criteria, you could look at making the switch to a startup to diversify your profile and strengthen your prospects. Similar to how at each job one needs to focus on the transferable skills from the prior job experiences, you would also have to convince the admissions committee (and later the companies) that you have a solid basis for choosing an industry or role for your post PGP career.

Your ECs seem dated and do not stand out. Do refer to this write-up that could help you massage your memory to recall any outside or at work initiatives that made a positive impact on people around you.

How to put together an impressive ECs essay when you don’t have many?

You have not mentioned your goals. It would be best to deliberate on what would you like to do in the long term and break down the trajectory into possible career paths with a plan A and plan B so as to give yourself some flexibility (also to the Business schools).
You have good academics and an esteemed pedigree, but you would need to show strong motivation for transitioning from a technical PSU role to the business/general management track. My suggestion is to talk to alumni of your target schools, especially those who have also worked in PSUs previously to understand how did they go about planning the transition from a PSU to the B School to the private sector (assuming you wish to switch to private sector as well). An exceptional applicant would draw insights from these interactions and use the takeaways in his essays and interviews to his advantage demonstrating a conscientious strategy for his own transition. Some roles PSU folks consider exploring are Supply chain/operations design, supply chain product (design or operations), Analytics and Business Finance (especially at start ups if finance interests you but you have no prior experience in finance), and consulting or corporate strategy for startups or corporates in specific industry.

Here are some ideas on how to ace your goals strategy

Compelling Goals Strategy 101

Target a score of 730+ on GMAT.

Hey folks, would like a few suggestions on my profile:
Background: 23, Male

What I think is good:
Acads:
10 - 10 GPA (CBSE)
12 - 95% (CBSE)
BTech CSE - 9.3 (VIT Vellore)

Work Ex (1 YoE): Analyst (Wealth Analytics) at an asset management firm (This is more on the tech side as a function). I already have ownership of the only AI system in the firm, whose integration I did from scratch.

Others: 2 tech internships (one is in the firm I work at, PPO convert) and 2 tech research articles.

What I think is ok:
ECAs:
- Organising team for the firms international hackathon.
- Organising team for multiple 200+ attendee events in undergrad.
- School Prefect and headed the computer graphics team.
- Consistent accolades for science from elementary school.
- Black Belt in the martial arts at age 12.
- 1 recent online volunteering experience (should have been international on-site, so much for covid)

What I still need to do:
GMAT: To be taken within 3 months. Early mocks are in 670-720 range.

Particular places where I want some suggestions:
- The plan is to apply to ISB for 2024 intake, but should I also focus on for the EEO option?
- Ideal GMAT range for these set of schools for my profile - ISB, INSEAD, HEC Paris, SDA, Cambridge and Oxford.
- Promotions at my current firm require at least 2.5YoE to move to the next level and is very dodgy. I could jump ship and look for software roles, but for now I'm sticking around for the brand. Is this a wise choice?
- My firm hands out awards to abysmally few employees and almost no junior is on that list. The probability of me getting a formal award is very pretty low. Is there anything else on my profile I could focus on to balance this?

Indian Male with Tech background is the most over-represented profile. You really need to distinguish yourself from other techies through your experience.

Here is my 2 cents:

1. Education: Good

2. ECAs: Focus only on collegiate level activities. Include school activities only if they took place on a state or national level.

3. GMAT Score: 750+ for INSEAD and ISB (Also consider LBS, IESE) and 700+ for HEC, SDA, Oxford and Cambridge (For consulting in MBB, target 760+)

4. Work Experience: Considering your current role and lack of growth opportunities, I suggest you either
a) work one more year to build a stronger profile by demonstrating leadership in ad-hoc committees and cross-functional teams OR
b) move to a leadership position in another company

In either case, 3+ years of experience is recommended. So, I would suggest targeting the 2025 intake.

5. Application Period: Network with students and alumni starting this year. Attend virtual open days to check your fit with the school. Apply for ISB under EEO next year and for other schools in R1 in 2024.

Hello mazzeo2727,

Thanks for writing in.

We would suggest that you keep performing in your current role and look at applying in 2024. Schools like stable profiles so don't worry about moving just for promotion unless something compelling comes up.

Companies have varying awards policies; again, do not worry about it. Your focus should be on getting access to leadership roles at work and taking up new tasks so as to have some impactful talking points.

A score upwards of 730 would be competitive for most of the schools (for SDA something even lower works); however, for INSEAD and Cambridge, we would suggest as high a score as possible. INSEAD also looks for strong international or entrepreneurial experience so you would want to see if that is something that you can work on.

All the best!

Hello mazzeo2727 hope you are doing well

I see signs of a promising young applicant in your profile. If your objective is to become ISB-ready at the earliest, I suggest you stay proactive at driving projects successfully at your current company as the functional lead (what you currently do) and get stellar recommendations for your PGP application in 1-2 years from your manager. In the meantime, you should also focus on attaining an impressive GMAT score and take up outside work initiatives (social volunteering/ a side hustle/ toastmasters etc.) to present a well-rounded profile.

If you want to target the schools in Europe especially INSEAD, HEC Paris, Cambridge, Oxford, then you could focus on building your profile not only within the periphery of your current role and current company but also in roles that would provide you with global/expatriation or leadership opportunities, taking your candidacy up by several notches. If the latter is more appealing to you, then you could consider making a switch at this point in your career so that you are able to later demonstrate a stable stint with employers just before you apply for MBA. 4-5 years of work ex is ideal for the European MBA programs. Alternatively, if the entrepreneurship track interests you, you could also consider joining an early stage start-up as a key team member and differentiate yourself as an applicant by demonstrating your growth trajectory with the venture in the next 2-to 3 years. Needless to say that a longer and more diverse career trajectory would also make you a stronger applicant for ISB 2-3 years from now.

The sooner you get out of your comfort zone the better the opportunities will be MBA-wise.

Best wishes
