Hi adebonis
Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations

My name is Shimri Winters, I head the strategy here at ARINGO. I am also an LBS alumnus and was 8 years on their interviewing committee (you can always rich out for some personal info and a deeper chances estimation via [email protected])

From what I can see, you have a very interesting profile!
Academics - Solid Bachler degree.GPA is not too much of a problem, and I have worked with many “low GMAT or low GPA candidates” as long as we can explain this (and you can explain it!) I don’t see an issue here…
although if we combine a low GPA with a low GMAT, it does raise questions (not to mention, you also need to take a TOEFL/IELTS, and I am worried you won’t reach the school’s minimums which is 105 for INSEAD, 109 for Oxford/Cambridge).
Previous EMBA – this is less good and actually concerning. Schools don’t like candidates with previous MBAs. Even if it is was a part-time degree.
(Please contact me privately, and we can discuss this fact further and what to do. you are not the first candidate contacting me with a previous MBA…)

GMAT - The big unknown ?. I suggest completing the exam and then talking… 630 will probably not be enough for LBS or INSEAD… (I did have a 610 and a 630 get in this year to LBS!!! But it was in the last round, and during the coronavirus year… ) my “previous record” was 640, for a South American candidate who got into LBS and INSEAD and 650 for an Indian accountant to INSEAD…
For Oxford / Cambridge I usually suggest a minimum of 630+
And for Cass and Durham 600+

    Volunteering -Very nice experiences!
Well done – the schools love people who care about their communities

Extracurricular activities - I hope you have some nice hobbies…

Work Experience - GREAT work experience’s really impressive!
From consulting to healthcare to the Olympics to Media (All good, although quite a lot of shifts in 5.5. years)
You definitely have a lot of material for the essays.
Still need to understand more about your international interactions, managerial experience, promotions etc. but from your description, your work experience sounds amazing!

Career goals - So, I think it is too early to discuss this (prior to GMAT) but I am not sure at all about “consulting in Europe” as the best path (how does this make you special vs. the other 50% of applicants who say “consulting”?).
But we can discuss this over a personal phone call ?

All in all, sounds like you have a very solid profile! But no GMAT = no MBA.
So, I suggest completing that, then the TOEFL, and then feel free to be in touch ([email protected]) for a deeper analysis and chances estimation

In any case, GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Hi, Kashish

Speaking of EMBA ... To be honest, 2 reasons make me want Full Time right now.

1) When I took the EMBA in Brazil, I had no idea how important the MBA was first. I actually burned a step out of inexperience and lack of guidance. In the heat of wanting to do a postgraduate course, but without much planning. At EMBA it was good, because I actually found out about MBAs in the best schools in the world.

2) Although the EMBA in 2015 was ranked in the FT, I believe that it is a long way from qualifying the best EMBAs in the world. However, he didn't even appear in the ranking the following years. So, although the model is similar to the others with case studies and everything, I believe that it is very poor in content, without much discussion, in relation to the better ones.

Hi adebonis,

You have got a great profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA and GMAT are low, though, with your work-profile, you have a good shot at SAID which greatly stresses the professional profile of a candidate. But for LBS and INSEAD I think you need a 650+. Also, if I am not mistaken, you have done an EMBA, right? So, why do you want to do an MBA now? You need a very strong reason for this if you have done EMBA.

Now, evaluating your work experience, I can clearly see a mature leader in you, a good graph of career progressions, and considerable international experience. I like your role at Rio Olympic games and the recognition there (getting an unqualified audit). Also, your work at the government agency is impressive. Your ECs, too, are pretty interesting exhibiting high-level leadership. I especially liked the fact that during your college you financially supported yourself and your family, it shows a very mature person from an early age and can bring a strong story out. But being an older applicant, you especially need to articulate your post-MBA goals very detailed and concrete, so take care of that. I would want to know about the EMBA thing better. Other than this, you have got a fair shot at your target schools. The most important part of an application is knowing yourself and your actions fully and coming up with an amazing, motivating story. You are welcome to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

3) The 5.5 are after my graduation from the university. If we ask just that period, I haven't changed "so much". I was at the Olympics, I went to Helth and I'm in a consultancy. However, nothing better with your experience (Member of the Candidates Committee), to tell me if it makes sense or not. I am really here to receive feedback and have a greater motivation for my dedication to getting a GMAT and a more advantageous TOELF.

4) Working in a consultancy in Europe is just the basis. Because the big difference I see, is my experience in emerging markets, like South America and Sub-Saharan Africa. So, I see myself as based in Europe, however, as a consultant in emerging markets. Here, we have many cultural differences that are not understood by everyone. You need to experience to understand.

5) Regarding hobbies, I like to play tennis and football. I have been playing tennis since I was 10 years old. I am passionate about Music, in particular Jazz and Brazilian music. Besides, I study wine a little whenever I can.

Does it look good?
Thank you for your time, if applicable, I can send you a more detailed CV for your email.

Hey, I think here you actually need to understand the essence of both these programs and then you may come up with better, valid reasons. So, an MBA is for the people who are at an early stage of their career and want to step stones to become a ladder. MBA is that stepping stone for the potential leaders who later in their life can become such leaders while an EMBA gives you the opportunity to serve as leaders right after the course. So, this is like you are in the 3rd standard and now, you want to go to the 1st standard again. And here more than a "good ranking" school, the course matters. People do two MBAs and it's admittable to repeat a class, right? But it becomes harder when you say you want to go back and restart your learning process. So, while pondering reasons for doing a full-time MBA, think it this way: What is your long term goal and how EMBA failed to help you get closer to it? How do you think, now, an MBA can help you achieve those goals? Prepare a complete roadmap for your career and this time, analyze wisely the options you have at your hand.

First, have a good thought about this and then, we are happy to brainstorm your goals, and your chances at schools with you. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Great
A good profile does compensate for a low GPA / GMAT
and to your question, YES, your profile "looks good". but as you can imagine, in some cases, this might not be enough. so a lot depends on the GMAT, TOEFL and the apps themselves.

I suggest you complete your GMAT / TOEFL and then send me your CV and info to [email protected] and we can continue our discussion there
good luck!

So, although the model is similar to the others with case studies and everything, I believe that it is very poor in content, without much discussion, in relation to the better ones.

ARINGO
Hi adebonis
Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations

My name is Shimri Winters, I head the strategy here at ARINGO. I am also an LBS alumnus and was 8 years on their interviewing committee (you can always rich out for some personal info and a deeper chances estimation via shimriw

So, I suggest completing that, then the TOEFL, and then feel free to be in touch (Shimriw) for a deeper analysis and chances estimation

In any case, GOOD LUCK!!!!!

adebonis

Hello userinfo0408,
You have a very interesting profile. With 10.5 years of experience, you may also consider some executive MBA programs. So, why not apply this year? One of the questions you will be asked is why you need an MBA after having a PGDM degree. That will need to be answered clearly in your application.
It seems you have changed your work profile from time to time. Any good reasons for that? I also do not get a sense of your EC and volunteering activities post-college from here.

Hi userinfo0408,

Your stats seem decent for LBS MBA. For your work-ex, I can see elements of impact and leadership. Your ECs are great and managing a forum of 200 people seems interesting. I have a piece of advice for you, in the next two years, try to gain some good international experience (outside the Middle East if that's possible) and get more leadership roles in your work. Also, I think 10 years for LBS MBA will put you on the older side. You already have done PGDM from India which takes 2 years and then 10 years of experience over that for a full-time MBA, I am not able to make sense out of it, would like to know reasons for this delay :) . If you need any help from us, we are happy to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi studyme,

Your profile seems good. There are some really interesting and unique aspects in your profile. About your concern of low undergrad gpa, I think you have sufficiently compensated for it through your gmat score, so that should not pose a problem. Your work-ex seems good too, though I can not comment much since you have not provided many details. It's quite great to manage a team of 50+. What really caught my eye is your participation in an international sports team (can get an amazing story around it). Also, I can see some great initiatives in your ECs (though a bit older). Since your community service and some ECs are a bit outdated, I would like to know if you have pursued any hobbies or have done any other thing after COVID happened? For your post-MBA goals, you definitely need more detailing and for this, I need to know your work-ex more to give you substantiative advice. I am sure 6 years of experience will help you getting a good, coherent story. If you'd like we are happy to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your career goals and chances to some good schools in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi All

I've left my profile below - I would really appreciate any thoughts or advice you could offer....and please feel free to be brutally honest!

Background and nationality
    - UK National, 29, male

Undergrad Information
    - Engineering master's 2:1 (UK grade) which I think translates into 3.2 - 3.5 GPA range

GMAT:
    - 750 (47Q / 46V / 8 IR)

Work experience and leadership
    - Approximately 6 years of work experience in Middle East oil & gas (4.5 years engineering, 1.5 years project management, 3 promotions).
    - Managed project teams of 50+
    - 8+ Direct reports

Community and others
    - Part of international sports team (fairly niche sport) and was training for European Championships 2020 until COVID
    - Volunteered in SE Asia to build anti-poaching outpost for animal charity (more than 5 years ago)
    - Committee member for Engineers Without Borders during undergrad (more than 6 years ago). Kick started a new wind turbine project, various outreach programmes, tutoring etc.

Post MBA goals
    - I would like to transition away from oil & gas and into something which has more of a positive impact. In the short term, I'm hoping that I can pivot into consulting with a sustainable energy or technology focus but I would certainly love the opportunity to stay directly within energy if I could find a suitable position; in the back of my mind is the idea that I could really influence a large company to make strides in the sustainable energy sector (e.g. an oil company transitioning towards clean power).

Anything else?
    - In general, I think my weaknesses are my undergraduate grade (it was a low 2:1) and my post-MBA goals. I don't have many role models with an MBA so I'm struggling to really define the post-MBA career path with much detail. I've spoken to a bunch of MBA alumni recently from LBS, HBS, Oxford etc. to try and flesh this out but I still feel like there are some unknowns. Is it acceptable to say that I want to move into consulting with an energy/tech focus, or work at an oil company to push their transition towards clean power?

studyme hi,
Shimri from ARINGO here (I head the strategy team here, and am an LBS alumnus myself, and was on the LBS interviewing committee for 8 years :) )

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations

You have a very interesting profile! From what I can see:

Academics Yes, your GPA is low! And HBS might take off some points for this. But, your 750 definitely compensates for that, and in many MBA programs give very few points to the GPA (vs. the GMAT).
Here at ARINGO, we specialize in working with candidates with low GMAT scores or low GPAs (or both), and I can assure you, you can get into top schools with this GPA!
Regarding the GMAT – what an unusual score for an engineer… 47? what happened with your quant?
(luckily, most schools, look at the total score, not the split!)

Work experience - So, I have worked with so many candidates from the Oil and Gas industry (at least 5 Schlumberger candidates each year ? , and consultants from all firms working in the Oil & Gas departments in the Middle East. This is great, as the projects involve a lot of people and $...
Another aspect I love about the Middle East Oil & Gas companies are the multinationals, multicultural teams… you must have a lot of experience with working with nationalities from all over the world? This helps a lot!
Also, your exceptional managerial experience at a young age) and fast-track progression sound amazing!

Volunteering - Very important and nice international experience.
I am not too worried about the fact they took place 5 and 6 years ago, you are a busy guy! That is fine

Hobbies - Need to know more about this sport :) but AMAZING! - this shows a lot about your character and you can bring from here a lot of essay material

Career goals - Bang on with your thoughts! As an Oil and Gas expert, you want to stay within this industry but shift towards alternative energy
I suggest being very aggressive with your medium goal. Think about senior positions and founding your own company in 5-10 years

All in all sounds like you have a very profile. I don’t know which schools you are aiming for and still missing some detail, but you are a solid candidate for LBS!

happy to help further with a detailed review if you send me your CV and any other info to [email protected]

GOOD LUCK!

Shimri from ARINGO here. I head the strategy team at ARINGO (and an LBS alumnus)

Thanks for sharing your profile
Your chances for a MIM degree in the top schools are high!
- Great GMAT
- Great professional experience so fat
- Good extra-curricular activities
- Good undergraduate (although mediocre GPA)
- Nice international experience (so far!)
ALL in ALL, - you have a great chance at the MIM programs...

(and BTW: Yes, it is fine you will have just over 2y of experience. Not a big deal at all! and no. You don't have enough experience to apply to a top MBA...)

We, at ARINGO, have a dedicated MIM team. if interested to hear more, please send me your CV to [email protected] and we can take it from there

GOOD LUCK!
akshatdhir
