Hello lathav

The 'stat's of your profile look decent for the likes of Rotman.
International experience and CA qualification will help. But you should now focus on bringing out the quality of your work ex by focusing on career progress and achievements.
Extracurricular play an important role in Rotman application (see this year's essay and you will understand) so the same logic will apply here as work ex- talk about 'quality' more than 'quantity' (accomplishments and contribution in these activities will matter more than a laundry list)

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Post-MBA plans:
- I plan on leveraging my risk advisory/consulting and financial operations experience in landing a strategy consulting job

Reason for (second) MBA:
- Looking for diverse global exposure, and the associated learning that comes with learning, living, working and operating in an global environment
- Need for a more case-based approach to academics to leverage my knowledge
- Greater opportunities in terms of global mobility
- Create a global network to help me achieve my medium-term and long-tern goals

Any inputs on my profile and chances will be helpful. Also, do you think I need to retake the GMAT? Will the individual sectional scores be problematic?

Thanks

26, male, Indian Sikh.
Business economics graduate from Delhi University (first division). I've derived that my GPA is 3.7 (kindly correct if wrong)
GMAT: 740 (Q51, V39, IR8, AWA6)
Work experience:
Full time 2.5 years, freelance 1.5 years.

I freelanced with a production studio as a cinematographer and a video editor for 6 months. They hired me full-time and promoted me to the post of senior producer because I was good at dealing with clients. This lasted for 6 months too.
Then I left for Mumbai to assist in ads and films to learn more. I was freelancing as well. I was the assistant cinematographer in Kapil Sharma's "Firangi". Was part of many short films as well.

Then I joined my family business of medicine exports. It involved handling purchase and negotiating rates and payment terms. Soon I started travelling to Imphal to manage a pharmacy as it's conflict struck area and hiring someone local was tough.
Additionally, I became a mutual fund distributor in Jan last year. I have a sizeable AUM under me. I am also a stock trader. I still freelance as a cinematographer.

In college I used to make short films on social causes. I'd write, shoot, direct and edit myself. The topics ranged from communal differences, eve teasing to organ donation. I screened the organ donation movie in my college and about 50 viewers pledged their organs after the screening.
I also won numerous awards in -
Street theatre
Best photographer
Best cinematography
Best short film (director)

I wish to get into financial consulting post MBA.

What is the deal breaker here? I've been told that my work ex won't count since I've mostly worked for myself or my family (albeit full time).

I got a mail from admissions team that minimum percentage required in final year is 74. I have a 72. But this is shocking because in delhi university, 60% is first division. I'm rendered unqualified to apply despite being in first division!

Hello abhisekmohanty86,

Thanks for writing in.

The strong leadership experience and international exposure will add a lot of value to your profile and should be leveraged well in your essays to portray your 'spike factor'.

The GMAT, though alright, is not stellar and that is one area of improvement we would recommend, especially considering you have some time at hand and because Canadian programs have become extremely competitive of late; a score of around 730 or perhaps higher will give you a very strong chance of cracking Rotman; of course, a strong application with a well-written set of essays will be crucial, as well.

We would like to take this opportunity to offer you a detailed profile evaluation for free; should you feel the need for the same, please do reach out to us.

All the best!

Good profile. Try to bring in some more extra curricular elements in your profile which shows passion, consistency and drive. Those would help you bring out your spike factors. Rest looks impressive. Good luck!

You have a good overall profile and the international experience along with your strong pedigree will definitely help add value to your overall case. Yes, the GPA is not stellar; however, if you are able to join the dots in your story and portray your skills and achievements through a set of stellar essays, you will have a fine chance at cracking Rotman!

Hello sanjibmiki,

Thanks for writing in.

You definitely have a strong academic background and while you have not shared details pertaining to your achievements at work, the experience of working in diverse geographies will definitely help. The extra-curricular activities do not look stellar, frankly.

Keeping in mind the details you have shared with us, we strongly recommend a GMAT re-take with a good 40 point improvement. Canadian programs have frankly grown very competitive of late and a higher GMAT score will add a lot of value to your profile.

Once the GMAT is out of the way, focus on a set of stellar essays; do ensure that your essays tie up your story in a logical manner and elaborate on your need for MBA.

Should you feel the need for a detailed discussion, please feel free to request a free profile evaluation session.

All the best!

Applying from Canada for 2020, Big 4 audit background with CPA. Trying to figure out what kind of chance I have for my targets, and potential scholarship $$

Background and nationality:
- 26M, Canadian (Filipino ethnicity)
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)
- (Projected): potentially taking CFA Level 1 (very common in finance industry in Canada it seems like)

Undergrad Information:
- Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), double major in Accounting and Finance
- 3.3/4.0 (converted from 3.7/4.5)
- I should note there's a downward trend in last two years (2.8/4.0 last year, 3.0/4.0 last two years). ECs were all in last two years and wanted to focus being a more well-rounded student, not sure how bad this looks to adcoms. I know Rotman requires a 3.0 in last year so I'm worried about this

GMAT:
710 (Q48 V39 IR3 AWA?)
- IR score is low but my previous two attempts I scored an 8 and 5 so I think having that on my score report offsets the low 3
- Just wrote this past weekend so haven't gotten my AWA yet, I scored 5 and 6 on my first two attempts

Work experience and leadership:
- 2.5 years Big 4 Audit (3.5 years if you include university co-op terms - can these be included in WE?). Promotion to Senior, high ratings and excellent reviews, lead senior on largest client in the office ($700M revenues, $1B market cap), performed audit work over two acquisitions and multiple equity/debenture offerings
- 1 year Financial Reporting Manager in a publicly traded company in the newspaper/media industry, implemented new accounting standards for investments and lease accounting, not a lot of other career accomplishments in this role
- (Projected): potentially looking for a new job that is more related to finance (ie. FP&A, TAS, Valuations, investment analyst) to have something tangible that shows my commitment to the career pivot

Community and others:
Current:
- Board Director at a charity that provides food access/security/policy
- Treasurer at an animal welfare charity that helps find lost dogs
- Finance Committee member at a non-profit youth employment services organization
Undergrad:
- Vice President for co-op students association
- Corporate Events Coordinator for accounting students association
- Business case competition team member (we won school of the year)

Post MBA goals
- Investment banking (post-MBA associate at big 5 Canadian banks or boutique firm) or corporate finance

Anything else?
Targets: Rotman, Ivey, Schulich, Queen's
Far Reach: Cornell Johnson, Duke Fuqua

Questions:
- With my profile, is there a chance for scholarship $$?
- Is my low GPA an issue when applying?
- Do co-op terms count towards WE?
- Should I take CFA level 1?

Leadership roles held:
President, Moot Court Society of my law school
Chief Convener, of the inaugural Model United Nations of the University
Chairperson in a number of Model United Nations Competitions (IR is a hobby of mine)

Query 1: Is the B.A.LL.B. degree accepted. Its a five year course in which I have got a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a Law degree. I want to get some inputs before putting this questions to admission representatives.

Query 2: Is there a minimum percentage which Rotman will require in my under-graduation. Someone on this forum suggested 74% is the minimum. Is that the case? My 72% represents the top 5% of the batch and 1st division, when the highest score was less than 80%. I want to get inputs on this as well before putting these questions to the reps of the school.

Great thread by the way!
