Hi. Please evaluate my profile. I represent Indian non-IT male. Here are the key highlights:

1. Decent 88% and 86% in 10th & 12th standard respectively. Im not sure if they are asked!
2. Undergraduate GPA - 2.92/4.00
3. Work Ex - 8.5 years (Oil & Gas MNCs)
4. 2+ years of International exposure in oilfield operations(UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq)
5. Total of Four papers published, two of them with leading industry researchers.
6. Regular promotions during work and rewarded personally from director middle east (HQ) for growing company footprint.
7. GMAT: 690

Should I reconsider taking Gmat since average Indian in these schools scores 700+ or would my work ex and achievement help me get through this?
My post MBA goal is to shift towards digital transformation of Oilfield for which there has been a significant investment in many companies already and I hope to transform my career towards this direction coming from a strong background in operations.

Appreciate your response on this matter.

ysp4ever hi,
Shimri here. I head the strategy at ARINGO MBA Admissions Consulting and review 100s of profiles each year.
your profile seems solid, but as your GPA sounds slow (I am less concerned about the GPA, and more about your position in class?), I would suggest trying to improve your GMAT.
As HEC is one of the most competitive schools in Europe, that receives 100s of Indian male engineers candidate applications (Story for the stereotyping!), then you really want to differentiate yourself in every possible way.
Professionally, Education-wise, extracurricular activities and of course, try to have an above-average GMAT

Keep in mind the GMAT is just one factor (we had a 620 get into HEC last year!), and it is all up to a strong application and it sounds like you have a strong and solid profile! Especially for EU schools, but I would feel more comfortable with 20 extra points in the GMAT...

Happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps if you send me your CV and any other info to [email protected]

GOOD LUCK!

Fin1ance
Nationality: Indian
Age: 21
Undergraduate in Business/Finance from a top 10 College of India
GPA: 7.8/10
GMAT: Aiming for a 730+
Considering MIF from HEC Paris

Work experience: Will complete 1 year at the time of joining the Masters as an associate consultant in a MNC.
Working mostly with risk, control, audit and sox with global exposure and clients straight after undergrad.
Have also voluntarily taught self defence classes for girls and been part of self defence seminars.

Undergrad

Have focused on sports and practicing martial arts all my life. Currently hold a black belt in a martial art. Have studied the basics of french and had exposure to it.
Represented my school in basketball.

Post Masters Plan- Getting placed in an investment bank as an analyst or a globally recognized firm as a consultant.

I‘m aiming for both HEC and HSG(but have heard about lacking placement process). Please, would anybody evaluate first my profile for HEC, then which school fits me better. Also any suggestions for schools or how to improve my application are always welcome!

Really appreciate any feedbacks. Thanks!

Hey Fin1ance,

You have a pretty decent profile!

Starting with your academics, graduating with a GPA of 7.8 definitely showcases your academic prowess. Moreover, considering your inclination towards the Mfin program, graduating with a degree in the same domain showcases your passions towards the field.

As for your GMAT, a target score of 730+ is definitely a good score and would open the doors for you to target most of the top business schools. One thing to keep in mind here is that as you are applying for an MFin program, make sure to score 49+ in the quant section as it will highlight your excellent analytical aptitude.

Now coming on to your work experience, there aren’t a lot of details here. But in the lieu of crafting a strong application, you must focus on the quality of your work experience. You haven’t mentioned the company name hence I can’t comment on the relevancy of their brand name. A big brand name certainly plays a part in bolstering your profile, as you’d be facing competition from applicants from big4 companies. But in case you don’t have such brand names in your profile, you can utilize your application to draw the focus on the quality of your work. Here, talking about the roles and positions you undertook, the teams and projects you led and the impact you created in those positions would help you establish yourself as a strong candidate.

You have a fair share of extracurricular as well. Participating in sports definitely highlights your determination and fighting spirit. Having a black belt in martial arts showcases your discipline and strength of mind. Moreover, the fact that you teach young girls martial arts as a form of self-defence displays your proactive attitude to make an impact on society which is an impressive trait as b-schools are on the hunt for candidates who fit the description of being a great future leader.

Extracurricular activities are a way to showcase your proactive attitude and how you have emulated the theoretical knowledge you gained in classes and created a positive impact by utilizing them in real-life situations. Hence, the initiatives you have taken up should highlight your holistic development on all fronts. A major factor missing in your profile here is the lack of extracurricular activities that align with your interest of getting into a Mfin program. To remedy this problem, you should definitely look into pursuing a finance certification such as FSM or CFA.

Given your school choices, St. Gallen comes under the ultra-dream category, which means that you have around 20-30% of acceptance in this school. Meanwhile, HEC Paris falls under the dream category, Which means they have an acceptance rate of 8-15% and due to their stringent admission rates, you stand a chance of 40-50% of getting into this program. A better strategy, in this case, would be to target a mixed bunch of schools from the dream, competitive and safe category.

According to your decent profile, you can target the following schools:-
Dream: LBS, LSE, Oxford, Duke, Fordham
Competitive: ESSEC, Schulich, ESCP Europe, WHU, IE

Another important aspect you need to focus on is to complement your profile with an equally strong application. An application through its various components such as essays, LORs and SOPs would help you to highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile. Moreover, the application acts as the window through which the admission committee can peer into your skills, calibre and your personality.

Lastly, since the major chances of your admission depend on the quality of your application, you might want to seek professional help to secure your spot in your target schools. That said, having helped over 2500+ applicants get into their dream schools, you can thus check out our, All-in-One Solution, to gain insights into how we can assist you in creating an application that could boost your chances of acceptance by a minimum of 3x.

Hey there,

You have a really interesting background--congrats on everything you've accomplished to date! At first glance your background is really unique and aligns with many of the core values of HEC Paris--that's all great. It's a bit tricky to really assess your profile without the GMAT, and I'm interested to know what you've been up to since your position at the architecture firm ended in May 2020. (If there was something covid-related I think schools will be fairly understanding, however it will be important to show that you've been using your time productively and that a masters in management was always part of the plan... not just something you're giving a try as a back-up option.)

I love how your work experience really aligns with your extra-curricular pursuits. It demonstrates a genuine interest in building up (literally and figuratively) the communities around you and I'm sure you have some really compelling stories to share with the admissions committee. I'd also encourage you to take a closer look at the Masters in Sustainability and Social Innovation at HEC Paris--it seems right up your alley and could be a good fit!

Other than that, good luck on the GMAT and please reach out if you think we can be helpful as you put your application together.

Hey ysp4ever,

First off I would like to say that you have a pretty decent profile and some really interesting work experiences.

Starting off with your academics, a GPA of 2.92 is slightly on the lower end, but considering you are applying for an MBA program, it won’t be much of a deal-breaker as the focus of an MBA program is primarily on the quality of the work experience.

Coming on to your work experience, you have a very extensive work experience in the Oil industry. You haven’t mentioned the company name, but in case it’s not a global brand, you would be required to focus on the kind of roles you have undertaken, the projects you undertook, and the positive impact you were able to create during your stint. Thus, effectively showcasing your work ex can help you establish in the minds of the admission's committee that you are no less than your competition who would most likely be Big 4 candidates.

Additionally, the research papers published by you not only showcase your depth of knowledge in the domain but also highlights your academic achievements and calibre. Gaining international exposure through your work further bolsters your profile by providing you with an opportunity to showcase your broadened horizons and the ability to succeed and adapt in foreign environments. Getting regular promotions and appreciations also strengthen your profile by authenticating your prowess in the domain.

Another significant aspect that schools focus is on extracurricular activities. So you would be required to elucidate your proactiveness in extracurricular and other initiatives. In case you don’t have any, it's recommended to work upon the same to build a holistic profile. You can take up volunteering work at local shelters or join certain clubs and organizations where you’d be able to make a positive impact by leveraging your leadership and communication skills. Drawing such experiences from the undergrad would also work in this aspect.
Now to address your concern of low GMAT, while 690 is a pretty competitive score, HEC Paris does require a minimum score of 710, which is why I would suggest a retake in case you are keen on getting into HEC.

On this note, targeting one school alone is never a good idea, given the competition you will face. It is thus always advised to target a good mix of 6 -8 schools. Here are a few school suggestions:

Dream: INSEAD, USC Marshall, Michigan Ross, UBC Sauder etc
Competitive: Schulich, Essec, ESCP, Babson, Mannheim etc
Safe: EDHEC, Grenoble, Skema, Kedge etc.

However, as you haven’t mentioned your inclination towards a certain region or category, this list is pretty generic.Hence, I’d suggest you take a FREE Profile Evaluation through the link given below to gain insights into your profile strengths and weaknesses and even receive a personalized list of school suggestions that best match your profile.

Hi Rushil2410,

You have got a great profile and HEC Paris can be a great pick for your career goals. Consulting and Finance are the two most favourite paths for the students there. As for HEC, your stats seem quite above average and so a clear demonstration of academic excellence. Your ECs seem quite diverse and exhibit a leader and an initiator. I do not have any details of your professional experience, about the roles and projects you took and the impact they have had but HEC does look for career progression and your desire and ability to "excel" in your roles.

Here are some qualities that the school looks for:

1. Ambitious/Inspiring Leaders: You are not only a team player but a leader who inspires his colleagues and team to do their best work.

2. Collaborative Leadership: You should be a leader of passion, humility, individuality and respect for others.

3. Global Outlook: Being a school of the world (in its most true sense), it expects you to have international exposure and an informed global outlook with a global vision of future

Also, your choice of words does exhibit your strong motivations to pursue MBA from HEC. To bring this into apps, try finding the gaps in your profile that HEC's program, its culture and values can fill and lead you to your life goals. Here is an article over HEC essay & tips. This article will help you understand the school better and determine your fit to it. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile at length and help you shortlist schools that fit you and your goals. Feel free to book our calendar as per your convenience.

Hi All,

Indian, female, 28

Experience: 5.8 years in B2B SaaS Product Marketing. My work has largely involved content development for all channels, digital marketing, customer communications. For the past 3 years I'm working with an MNC and also got promoted to a managerial position 3 months ago. I don't have any international experience but I have worked with teams in the US/UK.

Education:
I've already done an MBA from an Indian College (GPA 2.98/4). Would the fact that I already have an MBA work against me?
Exchange student at TAMU, College Station, USA for a semester (GPA 3.65/4).
    Bachelors 70%, 10th: 85%, 12th:80%

GMAT: Not taken yet but based on mock tests, expecting 700

Post MBA goals: continue working in marketing, and switch to luxury marketing if possible.

Community: 2 months of community service in a blind children's school.

Achievements: State level in swimming (not sure if relevant?), 1 of the 4 selected from a batch of 180 for the exchange program in US.

I'm dead set on HEC MBA'22 (Jan/Sep batch). Assuming I have a good application, what are my chances of getting into HEC?

I'm looking at schools in Europe only, so the other options I'm looking at are Judge, Said and IE.

Thanks :)

Hi Sagart21,

You have a good profile. Consulting is the most picked career at HEC post-MBA. Here is my two cents on your profile based on the details you've provided:

- Stats: Yes, undergrad GPA is lower but your targeted GMAT score can compensate for it. Also, you may like to explain it in the optional essay if that can help your candidacy. So, I would not worry too much about it.

- Work-experience: Sounds good. Working in a leading IT company can help to amplify the impact your projects would have created. You have some leadership experiences as well. Here I would talk about two things. One, HEC emphasize greatly on the achievements of your professional experience and the impact your leadership creates on an organization. So, do demonstrate a person with the potential of achieving great heights.

Second, international experience, the importance of which can not be overstated (at least for HEC). I see you work with clients of different nationalities. You should definitely speak about the impact of these experiences on you. What you found different in their cultures and perspectives and how it challenged your own thought-process and perspective? What you learned and gained professionally and personally?

- ECs: They are pretty good. You would like to talk about your travelling experiences. It can give a unique blend to your profile.

So, overall being from a highly competitive pool, you will need to put extra efforts in making your profile competitive and unique. Here is an article which talks about the profile of an Indian engineer and how she worked on her application (she is a Rotman admit with scholarship worth CAD 20,000. It may help you gain some profound insights and more confidence in your own story.

If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile at length and help you understand the mentioned schools better. Feel free to book our calendar as per your convenience.

Hi shubhs76,

You have a decent profile. Let's go step-by-step in evaluating your profile:

Academics: You have a low GPA plus a second MBA. I think these are the major concerns of your profile. Low GPA can be offset by a great GMAT, so I would not worry much about it. Doing a second MBA should not be a very huge concern as long as you have rationale reasons behind pursuing it. We recently have converted a candidate with second MBA getting into Rotman with a huge scholarship. So, I believe you should be confident in owning up your story. You may read her blog here.

Work-experience: I can find many good elements. Working in MNC should imply some huge projects of yours. Recently you've promoted to a managerial position, so this should communicate good leadership experiences till you apply. I see you have interactions with multi-cultural teams, so if communicated well, this can strengthen your apps.

Extracurriculars: Swimming sounds good if you still are engaged in the activity. If you want to work in this space, you may volunteer for something you strongly believe in. Every school loves community involvement, especially when you have a purpose. So, since you have some time, you can work on this aspect :)

HEC seems a good pick for your post-MBA goals. A big proportion of students take on marketing as a function post-MBA. But I want to know more about your long-term plans. They should be given a global outlook considering HEC's culture. Also, do speak about how you can contribute to its marketing club and for the larger picture, its community. So, overall I do not see why you should not apply to the school. I would also suggest you INSEAD if you're considering Europe.

If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile at length and guide you better. Feel free to book our calendar as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Thanks :)

Hi everyone!
Could you please evaluate my profile?

Background and nationality: I come from Kazakhstan (Central Asia)
Undergrad Information: BA in Economics, Nazarbayev University (class of 2021) Kazakhstan
Gender: Female
Age: 21
GPA: 3.52/4.00
GMAT: 670 (47Q/34V)
IELTS: 8.0
I speak Kazakh and Russian as a native speaker, Taking French as a part of the curriculum for 2 years (French level around B1), planning to minor in French Language and Francophone Studies

I am planning to apply for MSc in Marketing
My Dream School is HEC Paris, but I am not sure if I have any chances

Also considering EDHEC, SKEMA, KEDGE, Vlerick, WU Vienna

What would you suggest?
PS. I will not retake my GMAT, since I don't have time already and 670 is my highest score at this point.

Thank you in advance

Hi aikumissydykova,

First and foremost, since you are from Kazakhstan it adds an ethnicity factor in your profile which can further add a lot of diversity to the cohort and in turn work in your favor as schools are very particular about breeding diversity in their cohort. Additionally, you come across as an academically strong candidate owing to your GPA of 3.52 that highlights your academic prowess. Furthermore, you have mentioned that you have scored a 670 in your GMAT exam which is pretty competitive but falls a bit short when compared to your target school HEC Paris. However, since you are not planning to retake your GMAT exam, you can surely work with a 670 score, provided you ensure backing your profile with a very strong application. Since GMAT scores carry only a 20% of weightage in your acceptance criteria, you can draw attention to other aspects of your profile such as work experience and extracurricular activities to overshadow this small drawback.

Talking about your extracurricular activities, which is equally important as it showcases a holistically developed profile, unfortunately you have not mentioned any details.

However, to give you a brief idea of how to go about with this, you can elaborate on the clubs and associations you were involved in, the teams you led, certifications you undertook and most importantly your volunteering activities along with NGOs. Here you can further talk about the kind of events you organized, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways. All in all, varied skills can contribute towards you being a great future leader which would automatically impress the adcoms.

When it comes to your work experience, you need to talk about your internships especially in the marketing domain as well as how from being from an economics background you developed an interest towards marketing. Now considering the fact that you will be competing against applicants who have worked in the big four companies like KPMG, EY, DELOITTE and PWC, you can set yourself at par with them by talking about why you chose this company, what kind of projects you undertook, what were your inputs and what skills you developed. This will also showcase how you are chalking out a path towards your goal while portraying your dedication and consistency. Since you haven’t mentioned any details with respect to your practical experiences, you ought to begin building on this end, in case you lack relevant experiences.

All in all, you need to pay extra attention to your application which consists of your Essay, LOR and Resume as they carry 30% of an impact on your chances of bagging an admit. Most importantly, since your GMAT score is a bit on the lower end, posing the right application to overshadow this aspect of your profile is very important.

Since most details of your profile are missing, I cannot accurately comment on your chances of getting accepted into the schools mentioned above. However to simply categorize the schools, HEC falls under the dream category, while EDHEC, SKEMA and KEDGE comes under the safe category and lastly, VLERICK and WU VEINNA can be clubbed under the competitive category

On this note, I’d suggest you drop in details of your profile below, so I could present you with apt suggestions.

Alternatively, you can also Book a Free consulting session with one of our consultants who through their expertise can gauge the competitiveness of your profile and help you plan a winning strategy to bag an admit from your target schools.

Hi Rushil2410,

Your overall profile seems quite impressive. Your GPA of 7.1 is a bit on the lower end, but your GMAT score of 750 makes up for this drawback as it definitely showcases your academic prowess. Additionally, you also have a good college brand under your name which will further enhance your profile and thus increase your chances of acceptance.

Furthermore, your participation in extracurricular activities is equally important as it will showcase a holistically developed profile which is what the schools are looking for. Needless to say, you definitely possess an impressive hold on your extracurricular activities as you have held various leadership positions and responsibilities which is always the preferred role these B-schools are looking for. Furthermore, you have also mentioned your CFA certification wherein you have completed level 2 which again showcases your capabilities of excelling in the finance field as well as your proactiveness to constantly upgrade yourself. Additionally, I would suggest you to take up volunteering activities under an NGO to further showcase your socially empathetic traits. Having said that, you can enhance your profile by elaborating on the kind of events you organized, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways. All in all, these skills can contribute towards you being a great future leader which would automatically impress the adcoms.

Talking about your professional experience, you have a 2.5 years of work experience which is slightly on the lower end considering the fact that for an MBA program, adcoms prefer applicants who have had more than 4 years of experience. Furthermore, you have mentioned that you are currently working as a risk analyst at Credit Suisse which is a pretty good brand. Having said that, you will have to compensate for the low work experience by showcasing the intensity of the work experience, what kind of projects you undertook, what skills you gained, how you are different from others in terms of your work ethics and what are your major takeaways.

Coming to the choice of schools, you have mentioned that you are open to European and US based schools specifically HEC Paris which comes under the dream category with a very stringent acceptance rate that translates your chances of acceptance to be around 40% to 50%. In addition to this, you should always target a good mix of dream, competitive and safe schools in your case from US, you can be looking at school such as: NYU, DUKE, CORNELL, UNC, USC MARSHALL, BERKELEY, MICHIGAN and in Europe, you can be looking at schools such as: ESSEC, ESCP, INSEAD, WHU, FSFM, ESMT, UCD and TCD.

All in all, you need to pay extra attention to your application which consists of your Essay, Lor and Resume as they carry 30% of an impact on your chances of bagging an admit. Having said that, since your concern lies around your low work experience, I’d suggest you Book a Free consulting session with one of our consultants who will help you plan a winning strategy to overcome the particular weaknesses in your profile through tried and tested methods that have helped over hundreds of similar applicants win an admit from top ranked B-schools worldwide!
