If |6 – x| = 7, what is the value of x?

(1) x^2 > 0
(2) x > 0

|6 – x| = 7
i.e. x = 13 or -1

Question: what is the value of x?

Statement 1: x^2 > 0
x^2 > 0 is true for both x=13 or -1 hence
NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: x > 0
x > 0 for only x=13 and not for x= -1 hence
SUFFICIENT

Question Stem |6-x| = 7
(6-x) = 7 or (6-x) = -7
x=-1 or x=13

Statement 1
x^2 > 0, both (-1)^2 = 1>0 , (13)^2 =169 >0, Inconclusive both, x=-1 and 13 fits into. Statement-1 Insufficent

Statement 2
x > 0

only x=13 holds, hence sufficient.

If |6 – x| = 7, what is the value of x?

(1) x^2 > 0
(2) x > 0

We can start by determining the possible values of x from the equation |6 – x| = 7. To determine the values of x, we can solve the absolute value equation for when 6 - x is positive and negative.

When 6 – x is positive:

6 - x = 7

-x = 1

x = -1

When 6 – x is negative:

-(6 - x) = 7

-6 + x = 7

x = 13

Statement One Alone:

x^2 > 0

Since x^2 is greater than zero, x can either be positive or negative. Thus, x could equal -1 or 13. Statement one alone is not sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choices A and D.

Statement Two Alone:

x > 0

Since x is greater than zero, x must equal 13. Statement two alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Answer: B

2 ways to do abs. val

Pos

6-x =7
-x =1
x= -1

Neg

-l6-xl = 7

(2) x > 0

Question : x = ?

Given : |6 – x| = 7

6 – x = 7 or 6 – x = - 7

x = -1 or x = 13

St 1 : x^2 > 0, then x can be -1 or 13 Not sufficient

St 2: x > 0

means only 13 is the valid answer. Sufficient

Statement 1:
X^2>0; there can be 2 cases x can be positive and x can be negative. Therefore will lead to two values of x
Statement 1 is not sufficient

Statement 2:
X>0; x is positive. This statement will give only one value of x
Statement 2 is sufficient

Option B is the answer
