Your current experience exhibit leadership, versatility and impact (try to communicate it in qualitative terms as well). In all, I can see a good career trajectory and a mature leader in you. Your community experience looks good too and bringing some different, interesting hobbies (like the meditation thing) on the table will make a well-rounded application. So, overall, considering your background, you stand a fair chance at Wharton. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile at length and try to guide you better for Wharton and other good schools. Hi gonerias,

I see that several experts have already commented on your profile and I agree with most of them. :) You have an excellent work experience and extra-curriculars as well as a solid GMAT score.

I have worked with several students from Oil and Gas industry applying to top business schools so I understand your career trajectory and also how MBA can help your career advancement. Two of my students recently got into Duke Fuqua and other one at LBS.

There are 2 things that I would like to say:

1. Your post-MBA goal of going to investment banking perhaps needs more thought and research? It is difficult for people from non-finance background to get into general investment banking unless you are specifically targeting companies that deal with energy investment banking?

2. Business schools love couples. When I was at Ross Michigan? I had a couple from India as my classmates. As an admissions consultant, I've helped several couples apply and get admitted :)

If you need personalized help with your application feel free to get in touch with me directly at [email protected].

Wishing you and your husband all the very best!

Best

Hi Experts,

Please provide your honest reviews for my profile-

1) Background and nationality - Female, 28, Indian, IITian.

2) Undergrad Information - CGPA 8.4/10 BTech Petroleum Engineering - IIT ISM Dhanbad

3) GMAT: 740 (Q50 V41 IR4) - Kind of freaking out about the pathetic IR score - hope you can shed some light if this can be a deal breaker!

4) Work experience and leadership - I have worked for 6 years in world's #1 oil and gas services provider. I joined my segment as the only female field engineer and worked across various field locations in India - onshore/offshore. I then progressed to Account Manager / Sales engineer role in which I handled PnL of $10M account, submitted bid worth $100M, working alongwith Sales team from Romania. I then moved to Project Manager role where I handled a diverse team of approximately ~50 people from different product lines and lead high visibility projects in India. I was also the Peer reviewer for my segment for all South-East Asian countries. In these 6 years, I have published 8 research papers, across 6 international Oil and Gas Conferences. I have been recognized as the top performer by the company's headquarter in various internal events.
I recently resigned from this position to join a HealthCare startup as General Manager - Business Development. I will have ~6 month experience in this role when I will apply to B-Schools in R2.

Community and others - I am an avid trekker and I have lead difficult Himalayan treks for a group of 8-10 people on average (Roopkund, Stok Kangri, Everest Base Camp). Apart from this, I am content developer for NGO which aims to teach underprivileged children. I also take care of new energy initiatives in my family business - introduced molasses renewal to generate electricity for sugar cane factories.

Post MBA goals - I want to be an Investment banker and contribute towards sustainable future in Energy world.

Anything else? - I am applying with my husband (GMAT - 750, IITian, similar profile as mine) to B-schools although for Wharton, he is submitting his application in R1 and I would submit in R2. Please shed some light on how B-schools perceive couples who apply together?

Thanks a lot for your reviews in advance!

Hi smitrambhiya21

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations
My name is Shimri Winters, I head the strategy here at ARINGO.
We have a dedicated deferred MBA team and I shared your profile with them.
WOW, we are really impressed and when the schools came up with the deferred MBA program, it was candidates like you that they had in mind!

Academics – great undergraduate and GPA! Well done!

GMAT – 750 is an excellent score (And as deferred candidates don’t have much work experience, the GMAT and GPA are so important!)

Start Up – WOW! Keen to hear more about this!

International Interactions – The startup lab is actually a great place to get visibility and share your idea with international partners and the Bocconi university connection is great. would love to see more of these?

Missing info – extracurricular activities (hobbies, volunteering)?

All in all, sounds like you have a fantastic profile and you could be an excellent candidate for ALL deferred enrollment programs!

Happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps if you send me your CV and any other info to [email protected]

GOOD LUCK!

Hi Avian96

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations

I have to say. I am impressed! You are young, but you are great 😉 and you have a very good chance overall of getting into a top business school, this year (And worst case, you try again next)
From what I can see:

Academics – fantastic GPA! Great Tier1 undergraduate uni (NYU Stern)

GMAT - Well, 750 is above the average of ALL the schools in the world

International experience – This seems like a key differentiator for you! - Internships in Europe, Asia and the US? WOW!!!
And if you work for a known brand, even more wow!

Extracurricular activities – I love both your hobbies and very happy to see you have some volunteering too! Obviously being part of the LGBTQ community and supporting/volunteering/representing the LGBTQ members is amazing

Strengths– the LGBTQ stories are great, but, don’t mention this too many times 😊 (for example, in the profile below, you mentioned this 6 times… you have many “tickets”. This is just one of your diversities and strengths! Another one would be your origin. Most East European countries are underrepresented in the top MBA programs. another strength is your strong academics! And I am sure there are more

All in all, strong profile. I think you are planning on applying next year? If so, I would be happy to talk and help further with a detailed review (probably around May?) and perhaps work together on some amazing apps if you send me your CV and any other info to [email protected]

GOOD LUCK!

Hi echeok,

Your undergrad uni is great and GPA seems great as well. Your work-ex forms a major chunk of your profile and is interesting. I can see a clear career trajectory with great achievements and impacts of yours on the organization you are currently working in. Leadership, I think, is definitely a strong point in your profile as you lead many big projects and have good mentoring experiences inside and outside of work. Your international experience can be a strength for you if you're able to communicate how it has changed your perspective and impacted your personality.

I really liked the part where you took a gap year and used that time to give it to the community. But it seems like your profile talks only about a work-person. I advise you to bring some hobbies as well that you may pursue now (language is an interesting one, any other that you can bring?). All I intend to say is just try to bring a person to your application with a good mix of life-experiences. Your post-MBA goals do make sense but I think we need a broad discussion here.

For your GMAT, if you are very serious about Wharton, I think you should try scoring 700+. But even after your best efforts, if you're not able to do it, I think it's totally okay. You can focus on other important parts of your profile and come up with a solid, strong story. We have candidates with year gaps, lower GMATs, over-represented backgrounds making it to top-notch programs, so I think it's your story that will make a statement. So, just give your best efforts to reach 700+ and then get back to your apps. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your hiccups and try to address all of them with a better understanding of yourself and your dream schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi there! Appreciate if I could get feedback on (1) my profile and (2) thoughts on my chances at Wharton if I get around 690 GMAT Score or if I should retake.
Thanks in advance :)

Demographics
Age: 28
Gender: F
Citizen: Singaporean

Education
BBA NUS
GPA: 4.2 (Marketing Major, deans list twice)

GMAT: Yet to take, thinking lowest I'll get is 690

Work Experience: 3 years +
(1) 1 year - SEA Marketing analyst at Ecom fashion platform that was relatively startup (<5 years running)
- Picked up basic coding as I was in charged of conversion rate optimisation
- Part of the team that started to monetize ad spaces on our site, I handled the operational onboarding process including finance/legal requirements across the region

Doing CRO made me realise I was just looking at a small portion of the company's books (revenue) and I wanted a broader exposure

(2) 2.5 years - APAC Finance controller at luxury cosmetics company (parent company is a large french company)
- Worked for SEA team 1 year
--> Did mainly top line reporting / gap analysis also helped to upskill / streamline the reporting that the markets were doing
--> On the side marketing related things (team that launched hugely successful inaugural event) / planned+emcee an SEA competition for influencers - got to meet + PR with celebrities was pretty cool).

- Promoted to APAC team doing more in-depth into FPA worked across 13 markets
--> In-charged of pricing our products (FX fluctuations / competition across the region / pricing guidelines)
--> Responsibly for training and rolling out 2 platforms for the region (financial reporting tools)
--> Budget & P&L reviews (regular exposure to Directors / VP / GMs)
--> COGS / Margin review
--> Financial modelling to negotiate deals with our counterparties / new market openings
--> Review organisation structure / distribution model

Undergrad:
- Exchange for 6 months in Europe
- Gap year post grad 6-7 months in Nepal: was tutoring kids at an orphanage / teaching English to the high school seniors preparing for their uni entrance exams / gave 1-2 entrepreneurship classes/sermons in the community / did outreach caroling and post earthquake relief

Extracurricular Activities
Post-Grad: Not much tbh have been really busy since work started my side hobby has been learning Japanese for 4 years now and I have an N3 certification.

Undergrad
- Student camp leader for 2 separate camps / Planning committee in 1 camp
- Won 1 case competitions / 2nd place in another; one with a local publishing company and another with Global MNC (was a non-profit type thing to address social problems)
- Outside of school I was volunteering with a church, planning & execution of lessons for children in the community

Post-MBA goals
- ST: consulting - why? Learn across different functions and fast. Working at a Global/ cross-market level and apply that perspective to APAC / PEs in the region
- LT: PE - why? Shape the competitive landscape

Wharton is my dream school so appreciate the time and effort taken to review my profile
From my perspective, strength & weakness of my profile as below; let me know if I'm off target here and where I can improve on:
Strength
(1) Global perspective - living abroad Nepal and Europe / speaking 3 languages / work wise have always been in regional position / grew up in mix-culture household (parents are from different SEA countries)
(2) Mentor/leadership - at work I own 3 platforms for the region (2 of them I self-learned then trained and rolled out) / held excel class for my colleagues to upskill / mentor for youth in Nepal & During Uni days

Weakness
(1) Potential 690 GMAT Score
(2) Run of the mill consulting goal

Hi all, would really appreciate an honest review and constructive feedback especially for weaving my story together. I fortunately have had a myriad of experiences to draw from but I'm also struggling to weave them together into the most coherent and compelling story. Target is R2 Wharton Lauder program, but also looking for feedback at HBS, CBS, and GSB.

Demographics:
Age: 25 at matriculation
Gender: M
Citizen: USA
Ethnicity: Asian American (born in Beijing, grew up between Singapore and NY, and this background is a central theme to my application + the Lauder program)

Education:
BBA at Goizueta (Emory), minor in Economics (early graudate)
GPA: 3.7

GMAT: 780 (51V 50Q 8IR)

Work Experience:
3.5 years at matriculation (due to early graduation)
EY-Parthenon/LEK/OW tier consulting in NYC, growth strategy and commercial due diligence in Consumer and Tech sectors
- Promoted twice in 2 years (Associate > Senior Associate > Consultant), which usually takes 3 years but I was promoted mid cycle due to performance and since I joined immediately after early graduation.
- Highlighted case experience includes: leading an international team of 4 associates in a market entry project for a UK consumer company trying to enter China, US 10-year GtM strategy for $4b German agri-business with US COO sponsorship, CDDs in consumer and tech

Internship: B4 M&A Advisory in Austria, PE due diligence

Undergrad:
- Studied abroad in Vienna, Austria for 1 semester, really liked the culture so leveraged an alumni relationship for an internship there the following summer. Also studied German for both durations.
- Studied Arabic for 2 years because I am fluent in Mandarin, became VP of Arab Culture Association
- Started an ecommerce logistics company in soph year, went through a semester long accelerator, had a MVP and pitched at several competitions around the country, pitched to a few angel investors, won several awards and a few thousand bucks.
- Started a non-profit consulting group to support non-profits and SMB while giving students hands-on consulting experience, went from team of 7 to now a team of 30, with 1400+ hours serviced, still ongoing relationship with the current president.
- Executive position in undergrad entrepreneurship club, helped to organize annual hackathon with $75k+ in prizes

Extracurricular Activities
- Still keep in touch with the nonprofit org I started on campus
- Did a 2-month pro-bono case on strategic planning and fundraising for a women's non-profit
- Keep a blog on international micro-cap investing ideas
- Not sure if relevant but I've played the piano since 6 and passed the highest level certification with high distinction from ABRSM at 14. I also produce and mix my own music, music is a big passion of mine and I go to a ton of concerts (classical and electronic).

Awards:
- Got 3rd, 4th, 1st in case competitions hosted by Deloitte, Wells Fargo, my undergrad, not sure which I should list
- Won many business plan / pitch competitions for my startup, best one is probably "Top 10 Young Tech Startups in Atlanta" by the Atlanta Tech Village (a tech hub)
- Won 6 performance recognition awards at my current job (over 9 projects)
- Dean's List in freshman and sophomore year before I shifted focus to ecommerce startup and non-profit consulting group (is this worth mentioning or will it sound like an excuse?)

Post-MBA goals
- ST: VC/growth equity associate/senior associate - why? I have experience with growth/CDD spanning the business life-cycle, and want the Wharton finance education and network to transition into buy-side
- LT: start a cross-border VC/GE fund focused on geographic arbitrage (leveraging successful business models in other geographies)

Essays:
- Why Wharton: will focus on the large global network, distinguished finance curriculum/staff to supplement by strategy background, and access to specific entrepreneurship resources and courses, PE/VC clubs/resources, which will credentialize my investing acumen beyond just a "strategy guy"
- What will I contribute: startup, growth strategy, and due diligence background to speak to growth opportunities for organizations at different points of their life cycle, and to the consumer and tech sector which i follow due to my work and my personal micro-cap investing. Will also lightly touch on my international background and work experience to not overlap with the Lauder essay (but will focus more on this for other schools)
- Why Lauder/my contribution to Lauder: Will contribute my extensive international background (personal, professional, and educational) and passion for traveling and meeting people. My intention is to use specific international studies classes and programs, plus the extensive global network of alumni to plug in to various geographies and understand how certain established business models can be adapted for other uniquely and quickly evolving business environments in emerging markets, especially during a time of rapidly shifting geo-economics (for my LT goal of starting a cross border GE fund)

Recs:
- #1 will be from a senior director (mentor figure who I am very close with and we have worked on multiple projects together) who is a Wharton MBA alumni, will primarily focus on high performance relative to peers and analytical ability, estimating 9/10 sentiment
- #2 will be from co-founder of startup in undergrad. Intention is for him to speak to soft skills like passion, drive, teamwork, and charisma during our time working together. This is more a wildcard because he's my age and a peer, title is analyst at a PE firm, and we worked together 5 years ago but we're still good friends today. But I am hoping the risk pays off since another supervisor from my firm would say similar performance related things as #1 without the Wharton credential and without knowing me as closely.

Hi Zdeminador,

Thanks for reaching out.

Gmat- Congrats on a fantastic GMAT score, this is by far your best advantage.

Extra-Curricular- Your extra-curricular activities look good. Don’t be shy to let them know about your musical background. Candidates often refrain from speaking about hobbies, but they can actually show your hard-working and diligent nature.

Work Experience- Your work experience looks great for someone so young. The average amount of years of work experience at Wharton is 5 years, but don’t let that discourage you. Let them know about your achievements and this should

Be sure to highlight your international experience during your application process and interview. This could make you stand out from the crowd.

Or shoot us an email at [email protected] we’d be happy to help you out more.

Good luck,

Hi Karam12345,

You've got a good profile. Let's go step-by-step in evaluating your profile:

Stats: Great undergrad college with a great GPA, an excellent GMAT and a topper in a national exam! So, this part is very well sorted.

Internships: On the surface, you seem to be exploring the finance world with varied roles at different kinds of companies. But I need to have more details over the impact you created and the different initiatives you took other than your role, especially when you do not have brands in your CV. Also, this is one of your concerns so let me share the logic behind the adcom's fondness of big names. If you have worked in big companies, first, it clearly exhibits your potential without even looking at any details and second, it implies a larger impact. So, as long as you can communicate huge impacts of yours in the startups and companies you've worked with, you're good. You can use this to your advantage because startups provide you with the opportunity to work at strategic positions in different departments imparting you with a good knowledge of how business works.

ECs: Well, your social entrepreneurship project looks good. LORs are great as well. You may also talk about any of the other interests you're involved in and may have some achievements there.

So, overall your profile is great but for the deferred programs, you face even tougher competition than general MBAs. So, along with all the achievements, you need to be reasonable as how an MBA rightly fits your career goal and provide you with the knowledge that you might not find in your first jobs. Since I do not know your career plans, can not comment over here. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you discuss your profile at length. Feel free to book our calendar as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi smitrambhiya21 -- I agree with the other feedback that you have a really stellar profile for deferred MBA programs at any of the top schools. It will all depend on how well you can tell your story - it certainly sounds like you have the components to create a great one. My company, Stratus Admissions, happens to be holding a FREE webinar on December 15: How to Nail Your Deferred MBA Applications. I thought it might be useful to you - if you're interested, you can register here. In any case, best of luck to you!

Hi Neko024,

I must say that your profile is progressive. I also appreciate your past efforts and current MBA goal to improve your career and change the industry. It is common for high-performing individuals to change their career line with the help of an MBA at a good college. I request you to stick with me throughout this text as I evaluate your profile step by step.

The average GMAT of the typical class stands at 722. Though the range of accepted GMAT also includes 690 that depends a great deal on work-experience and ECs. Given the fact that you don’t have any exposure in Finance and core Consulting which most top b-schools demand, your proposition will fall weak if you keep it that way. So, while you may try to increase your GMAT, you need to work harder on showcasing your profile as that of a Marketing oriented with a long-term orientation towards Consultation.

Being said about score, I personally believe your ECs are fabulous and you should not underestimate them. Your Japanese certification is of unique importance along with the fact that you have made social contributions as well, especially the one when you took a year gap and tutored kids in Nepal. It’s very unconventional. Your international exposure marks another qualitative characteristic of your profile.

Also, your work-ex does bring many good elements including leadership and business strategy. You should talk about the experiences that may have helped you cultivating and enhancing these skills at work. All this together will come forward to support your GMAT score for your dream college.

If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call some time this week to discuss your chances in further detail and help you understand your target schools better. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi there! Appreciate if I could get feedback on (1) my profile and (2) thoughts on my chances at Wharton if I get around 690 GMAT Score or if I should retake.
Thanks in advance :)

- Picked up basic coding as I was in charged of conversion rate optimisation

Doing CRO made me realise I was just looking at a small portion of the company's books (revenue) and I wanted a broader exposure

- Worked for SEA team 1 year
--> Did mainly top line reporting / gap analysis also helped to upskill / streamline the reporting that the markets were doing

Weakness
(1) Potential 690 GMAT Score
(2) Run of the mill consulting goal
