Hi all, would really appreciate an honest review and constructive feedback especially for weaving my story together. I fortunately have had a myriad of experiences to draw from but I'm also struggling to weave them together into the most coherent and compelling story.
Target is R2 Wharton Lauder program, but also looking for feedback at HBS, CBS, and GSB.Demographics:Age: 25 at matriculation
Gender: M
Citizen: USA
Ethnicity: Asian American (born in Beijing, grew up between Singapore and NY, and this background is a central theme to my application + the Lauder program)
Education:BBA at Goizueta (Emory), minor in Economics (early graudate)
GPA: 3.7
GMAT: 780 (51V 50Q 8IR)
Work Experience: 3.5 years at matriculation (due to early graduation)
EY-Parthenon/LEK/OW tier consulting in NYC, growth strategy and commercial due diligence in Consumer and Tech sectors
- Promoted twice in 2 years (Associate > Senior Associate > Consultant), which usually takes 3 years but I was promoted mid cycle due to performance and since I joined immediately after early graduation.
- Highlighted case experience includes: leading an international team of 4 associates in a market entry project for a UK consumer company trying to enter China, US 10-year GtM strategy for $4b German agri-business with US COO sponsorship, CDDs in consumer and tech
Internship: B4 M&A Advisory in Austria, PE due diligence
Undergrad:- Studied abroad in Vienna, Austria for 1 semester, really liked the culture so leveraged an alumni relationship for an internship there the following summer. Also studied German for both durations.
- Studied Arabic for 2 years because I am fluent in Mandarin, became VP of Arab Culture Association
- Started an ecommerce logistics company in soph year, went through a semester long accelerator, had a MVP and pitched at several competitions around the country, pitched to a few angel investors, won several awards and a few thousand bucks.
- Started a non-profit consulting group to support non-profits and SMB while giving students hands-on consulting experience, went from team of 7 to now a team of 30, with 1400+ hours serviced, still ongoing relationship with the current president.
- Executive position in undergrad entrepreneurship club, helped to organize annual hackathon with $75k+ in prizes
Extracurricular Activities- Still keep in touch with the nonprofit org I started on campus
- Did a 2-month pro-bono case on strategic planning and fundraising for a women's non-profit
- Keep a blog on international micro-cap investing ideas
- Not sure if relevant but I've played the piano since 6 and passed the highest level certification with high distinction from ABRSM at 14. I also produce and mix my own music, music is a big passion of mine and I go to a ton of concerts (classical and electronic).
Awards:- Got 3rd, 4th, 1st in case competitions hosted by Deloitte, Wells Fargo, my undergrad, not sure which I should list
- Won many business plan / pitch competitions for my startup, best one is probably "Top 10 Young Tech Startups in Atlanta" by the Atlanta Tech Village (a tech hub)
- Won 6 performance recognition awards at my current job (over 9 projects)
- Dean's List in freshman and sophomore year before I shifted focus to ecommerce startup and non-profit consulting group (is this worth mentioning or will it sound like an excuse?)
Post-MBA goals- ST: VC/growth equity associate/senior associate - why? I have experience with growth/CDD spanning the business life-cycle, and want the Wharton finance education and network to transition into buy-side
- LT: start a cross-border VC/GE fund focused on geographic arbitrage (leveraging successful business models in other geographies)
Essays:- Why Wharton: will focus on the large global network, distinguished finance curriculum/staff to supplement by strategy background, and access to specific entrepreneurship resources and courses, PE/VC clubs/resources, which will credentialize my investing acumen beyond just a "strategy guy"
- What will I contribute: startup, growth strategy, and due diligence background to speak to growth opportunities for organizations at different points of their life cycle, and to the consumer and tech sector which i follow due to my work and my personal micro-cap investing. Will also lightly touch on my international background and work experience to not overlap with the Lauder essay (but will focus more on this for other schools)
- Why Lauder/my contribution to Lauder: Will contribute my extensive international background (personal, professional, and educational) and passion for traveling and meeting people. My intention is to use specific international studies classes and programs, plus the extensive global network of alumni to plug in to various geographies and understand how certain established business models can be adapted for other uniquely and quickly evolving business environments in emerging markets, especially during a time of rapidly shifting geo-economics (for my LT goal of starting a cross border GE fund)
Recs: - #1 will be from a senior director (mentor figure who I am very close with and we have worked on multiple projects together) who is a Wharton MBA alumni, will primarily focus on high performance relative to peers and analytical ability, estimating 9/10 sentiment
- #2 will be from co-founder of startup in undergrad. Intention is for him to speak to soft skills like passion, drive, teamwork, and charisma during our time working together. This is more a wildcard because he's my age and a peer, title is analyst at a PE firm, and we worked together 5 years ago but we're still good friends today. But I am hoping the risk pays off since another supervisor from my firm would say similar performance related things as #1 without the Wharton credential and without knowing me as closely.
