Quote:
Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.

This is a S-V agreement question.
'Each of' will require a singular verb.
'salespeople' is a plural subject and 'were retained' is correct.
'the company' is singular and 'was' is correct
'sales team members' is plural hence 'are' is correct.
POE:
A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is. --> that refers to sales people which is plural.
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. Wrong tense like B
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are. --> As each is singular, is should be used instead of are.
Option A is the answer

This question is testing our skills in subject-verb agreement.

Let us see the original sentence once:
Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

Let's first check the SV pairs:
Sales people - were -> Correct
Company - was -> Correct
Each - is -> Correct
Members - are -> Correct

Let us go via every option to see what is incorrect in them:

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
As per the above analysis, this option looks good. Hold.

B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
SV error - "Salespeople" - "was"

C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
SV error- "Each" … “are”.

D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
SV error - "Salespeople" - "was", "members" - "is"

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
SV error- SV error - "member" - “are”.

Answer A

Points to consider before elimination:

i) Each of Xs that (PLURAL) (SINGULAR). => Agreement as per coloration

ii) Any of Xs (VERB) => VERB for any depends on what follows of

So this is the structure we should look for.

Based on point 1 (blue color) agreement and Point 2 eliminate B and D.
the verb after that should be WERE and after MEMBERS should be ARE
Remaining is A, C and E.
Based on Point 1 :
C. Each <blah blah> ARE WRONG
E. Each <blah blah> ARE WORNG

Left one is A.

Also, there is an introduction of HAD BEEN. Either is fine HAD BEEN/WAS because we are given the indication AFTER, clearing the sequence of events.

So Answer -> A.

Tricks, traps and many other bad things are going on here :)

1) Each of the sales people - requires singular verb as the subject is "Each"
2) Each of the sales people that - requires plural verb, because "that" changes everything and now the subject is people

Eliminate instantly every option that uses singular verb that follows "that" (B and D)

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
I like this one.
1) "that were" correctly agrees with singular people
2) "is" summoned confusion on me but I think it's quite correct, If we extract "That" modification, we are left with "Each of the salespeople is more likely to receive a promotion..." seems corrects to me
3) "sales team members are" S+V correct agreement
4) "any of the other sales" I cant bet on this, but I have to mention that underlined "of the" is required

C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
1) "had been acquired" past perfect is not required as we use "after", which clearly indicates the time sequence, it's not incorrect but we can use past simple
2) "are" is incorrect, without "that" modifier we still have Each as a subject which requires singular verb

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.

1) "Are" is incorrect, as in option C
2) Imo Instead of "any other" we need "any of the other"
3) "member are" this is definitely incorrect

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

Each of the sales people.........is / are more likely to receive a promotion
Each is the subject of the sentence , hence, requires singular verb 'is' - eliminate C & E

Each ...is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is / are
the subject of is/are is sales team member , which is plural , hence correct verb is 'are' - eliminate B & D

after the company was / had been acquired
there no intend to show sequencial events from the past so 'had been' is not needed... 'was' is correct - eliminate B & C

Sales people that were / was retained
subject is sales people - plural - hence 'were' is correct - eliminate B & C

A has all correct forms, and hence is the answer!

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.

meaning is direct, a comparison statement
analysis: each when subject then it is singular, so accordingly we should handle

Each (s1- singular) of the salespeople that (s2-plural) were(v2- plural) retained after the company was acquired is(v1- singular) more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

POE:
A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. ( subject verb matches so lets come back later)

B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
( subject verb ( that was ie plural subject s2 singular verb v2) mismatches)
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
( subject verb ( each and are ie singular subject s1 plural verb v1) mismatches)
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
( subject verb ( that was ie plural subject s2 singular verb v2) mismatches)
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
( subject verb ( each and are ie singular subject s1 plural verb v1) mismatches)

so the remaining A which perfectly matches in subject verb is the answer

Ans is A

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

Analysis:
EACH... IS
SALES PEOPLE .... WERE
MEMBERS.... ARE

Options prefixed with X are discarded.

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
>> THIS IS CORRECT. Looks fine on first read. each agrees with is, people agree with were, and members agree with are. Lets still review the other options.

XB. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
>>Sales people does not agree with WAS. Must be WERE. This is Discarded. Dont need to check for other mistakes.

XC. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
>>Each does not agree with ARE. Must be IS. This is Discarded. Dont need to check for other mistakes.

XD. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
>>Sales people does not agree with WAS. Must be WERE. This is Discarded. Dont need to check for other mistakes.

XE. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
>>Each does not agree with ARE. Must be IS. This is Discarded. Dont need to check for other mistakes.

We may be distracted by use of HAD BEEN vs WAS... but other mistakes are sufficient to discard the incorrect options.

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. --> Correct. There are no Subject-Verb errors here. Also note that here use of simple past tense instead of past perfect tense for the earlier events is allowed as the word 'after' in the sentence provides clear sequencing.

B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is. --> Incorrect. Subject - Verb error. 'that' here refers to the salespeople and hence should have a plural verb.

C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. --> Incorrect. Subject - Verb error. The are in 'had been acquired are' refers to 'Each of the salespeople' and hence should be singular.

D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is. --> Incorrect. Subject - Verb error. 'that' here refers to the salespeople and hence should have a plural verb.

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are. --> Incorrect. Subject - Verb error. The are in 'was acquired are' refers to 'Each of the salespeople' and hence should be singular.

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

'Each' is correctly having singular verb 'is'.
'that' is referring to plural sales people, hence correctly followed by plural verb 'were retained'

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. --> SV agreement is maintained. "Each -- is"; "that -- were retained". Hence Correct.
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is. --> that (referring to plural salespeople) is followed by singular verb 'was retained'. SV agreement error. Incorrect.
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. --> Each (always takes singular verb) is followed by plural verb 'are'. SV agreement error. Incorrect.
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is. --> Again SV agreement error. plural salespeople -- singular was retained. Incorrect.
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are. --> SV agreement error. Each (always takes singular verb) is followed by plural verb 'are'. Incorrect.

First split: "that was" vs "that were":
"That" refers to "salespeople", which is plural, so "were" is the correct SV agreement choice --> B,D out.

Second split: "was acquired" vs "had been acquired"
unnecessary use of past perfect tense --> B,C out

Third Split: "is more" vs "are more"
the subject of the sentence is "each", which is singular, so "is" is the correct one --> C,E out

Fourth split:
"any of the other sales team members is" is incorrect SV agreement --> D out
"any other sales team member are" is incorrect SV agreement --> E out

Original sentence: Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

As the noun phrase "each of the salespeople that..." is singular, any verb that follows the phrase should be in the singular. Option (C) and (E) both use the plural verb are, which does not agree with the singular noun phrase "each of the salespeople that...". Eliminate (C) and (E).

The noun phrase "each of the salespeople that was retained after ..." is nonsensical. If the noun salespeople were singular, there would be no need of the word "each." The noun salespeople is meant to be plural. Eliminate (B) and (D).

Therefore, choice (A) is the correct answer as it is grammatically correct and conveys the intended meaning properly.

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

we do not need past perfect and after together. This eliminates B and C
each of the salespeople is singular but usage of "salespeople that" makes it plural , hence it should be "were" . this eliminates D
Now each of the salespeople is more likely not are more likely.
Thus this leaves with A

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
