Hey teaforte,

Firstly many congratulations on your amazing scores. I am due to appear for my attempt for the online GMAT exam. Have a couple of questions, if you could address them would much appreciate it.

1. How different did you find the questions in the exam from the official GMAC mock questions? This question is for me to better understand the relevance of the mock scores I am currently getting.
2. Do you get to know your score immediately? or do we have to wait for 7 days to know how did we do?
3. How much of a disturbance it is to have the proctor on video with you?
4. Did you face any network connectivity issues during your exam?
5. Before the test begins, can we talk to the proctor and discuss with him the what ifs of worst case scenarios? Like do they entertain conversations?

Again, as mentioned much appreciate your response.

Regards,
Shubham

1. For me Q was harder than mocks and V was easier. My mock scores was in line with my actual scores.
2. For online you cannot know your score immediately like in the offline version. In theory you could wait up to 7 days or longer, in practice, everyone I know including myself got the result within 2-3 days.
3. The proctor is not a disturbance at all if they don't try to talk to you. If they do, then it could eat into your exam time.
4. I had a system glitch where they had to relaunch the software and lost quite a few minutes as a result.
5. You can talk to the proctor but I don't really advice to do so. If I remember correctly by the time you're allowed to talk/chat with them, timing is running already. And if you end up talking for more than the allotted 2-3 minutes, then you lose exam time. In my case, my proctor tried to talk to me and I started my section 5 minutes late.

Wow. Congrats on your scores! Thanks so much for doing this experiment teaforte! I am sorry I did not notice it until now!
Thank you GMATaxe001 for bumpting it up.

I assume you took the ONLINE test first? and then Offline test the next day?

So you would not have known your online score for a week or a few days at least so you had no idea what you would get when you went to the test center?

Hi bb,

You're exactly right. I took my offline test a day after my online test, at the time I had no idea how I did during the online test and thought maybe I didn't perform too well due to the technical problems. I then received my online score 3 days after I took my offline test. My feeling is in both cases I was under-prepared for all the obstacles that might happen and could have done better.

Because I took the 2 tests one day apart from each other, I thought I'd share some comparison based on my experience.

Online: 760 Q49 V44
Pros: you are taking it in the comfort of your home and in a familiar environment. No travel required and generally you can rest pretty well. During the test, no mask is also a plus. There is also better noise control because you can close the windows (which is not possible in test centers due to COVID-19).

Cons: the unpredictability of what interruptions/hiccups you may experience due to the combination of internet connectivity and proctors. You can do as many system runs as you like, but you cannot predict and solve every potential problem. This was the reason online test was extremely stressful for me, and I booked an offline test immediately afterwards thinking I had bombed my chance. I started out with a few minutes short because the proctor was talking to me to sort out whiteboard issues (my whiteboard fit all criteria by the way). In the middle of reading a passage, I also got kicked out of the system, which had to be rebooted by the proctor and again lost some minutes and concentration. Finally, after the reboot for some reason the video screen was very dark even though I didn't change any of the lighting. For a few minutes I thought they'd terminate the test. Luckily it was resolved. I had mentally prepared myself for potential problems as I read about many others' experiences; however during the test I was still negatively affected. So for anyone taking the online version, I'd really recommend to prep yourself up and have a steady reserve.

Offline: 730 Q49 V40
Pros: less possibility of having technical issues (and more chance to fixed it even if you do). More breaks and more test order options.

Cons: depending on location, sometimes long distance travel is required and can take away from energy levels and rest. Noise due to having to keep the windows open. I know they have lots of earplugs/earphones, but for me the earphone gave me a headache so I went without it.

Overall, I'd say any obstacle with offline is predictable and a normal part of any test. I wouldn't think any of them made me under-perform. With online, it can be either very comfortable and convenient or very stressful.

teaforte Congratulations on your score.

Just a quick question. Shouldn't there be a mandatory 14 or 15-day break between a retake?

No. There is no break between online and offline gmat tests. You can take one of each on the same day :-)

Hi teaforte

Congratulations on the your score!

I have a couple of question though: Is the allotted 2-3 minutes for talking to your proctor also deducted from your exam time?

Also, How long before the start of the exam should I be online for system checking and other formalities.

Thanks

Hi there,

There's some minutes in the beginning of the session to allow you read through instructions, those are not specifically for you to talk to the proctor. Those minutes don't eat into your exam time. Most people don't need them because you already know the instructions by heart. However, if you or the proctor engage in talking/chatting, then those minutes go by very fast and anything beyond that will eat into your exam time.

They recommend you to be online I think at least 30 minutes early. And I'd check your system a few days before and then everyday once until exam date. I think I got on maybe 45 minutes early, and they just ended up starting my test early, which was not a bad thing.

Thank you very much for your response.

I have one more question if you don’t mind: Do you get any time between the quant and the verbal section for reading instructions etc or does the verbal section starts immediately after you complete the quant section?

Thanks

Hey,

Congratulations on your amazing scores!

I wanted to ask about the cancellation policy for GMAT online. Can you cancel the scores after you receive them?
